Abstract Hands-on experiments in laboratories are fundamental educational tools for technical sciences. However, laboratories are expensive and not always accessible to students: lockdown and in-person meeting restrictions due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, distant location of teachers and students, facilities used for higher-priority purposes. Moreover, creating specific experimental setups for teaching only can be costly. In that context, digitalizing laboratory setups provides an attractive teaching alternative for remote e-learning. Digital twins are not meant to replace real-world experiments but should enable flexible teaching and effective learning at a lower cost. They complement physical setups and can be virtual extensions, allowing for larger and more complex study cases. e-learning is now popular and many educational institutions provide open-access videos of entire courses. However, the digitalization of practical exercises for engineering is yet limited. The e-learning effort presented in this paper aims to establish a series of digital twins of experimental setups for teaching building physics, energy in buildings and indoor environment. The development of the two first digital twins is detailed here. They are designed for teaching operation and balancing hydronic heating systems. Their numerical models and graphical user interfaces are created with the LabVIEW programming environment.

The modern information society formulates tasks for the education of professionals who are able to adapt quickly to life situations, acquire the necessary knowledge and apply them in practice without assistance. Problems with the provision of education, which arose during the establishment of quarantine and the introduction of enhanced anti-epidemic measures in areas with a high prevalence of acute respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, required in real life to find ways to solve them rationally, using modern technologies. The situation made teachers work with information properly, be communicative, work on the development of their own IT competence by themselves. The development of modern technologies has diversified the methods of communication between teachers and students. This article presents an analysis of the implementation of distance learning in the Zaporizhzhia region and focuses on the difficulties faced by teachers, students, their parents, and ways to reduce the problems of introducing distance learning environment in particular. Monitoring the activities of various participants in the educational process provides opportunities to systematize information and provide recommendations for overcoming such difficulties. The experience of 2020 and the results of the survey showed that there was almost no separate distance and e-learning. An online survey was conducted during March 2021 in order to determine the opinion of teachers in the Zaporozhzhia region on the organization of educational and cognitive activities of students in the form of distance learning. The effectiveness of distance learning in educational institutions of the Zaporozhzhia region depends on the technical support of the educational process, the skill of teachers involved in this process, the use of effective communication. Survey participants believe that teacher motivation has less impact on the effectiveness of distance learning than the motivation of the learner. According to many respondents, the schedule of lessons has not changed, but the usual schedule of life has changed dramatically. Many educators emphasize that they work at a computer for more than half a day. Analysis of statistical data and freely expressed opinions of teachers, participants of the survey, suggests that no effective solutions have been found for the organization of "distance" learning, but there are teachers who respond positively to the existing situation and are in innovative search.

The educational system across the world has immensely been affected due to outbreak of COVID-19; it forced the shut down of educational institutions, which adversely affected student fraternity across the globe. Due to its contagious nature, COVID-19 demanded containment and enforced isolation that tremendously affected personal interaction of teachers and students. In the absence of traditional classroom teaching and one-to-one interaction, computer-based learning has emerged as closest substitute for off-line teaching. Against such a backdrop, it is pertinent to examine the students’ perception and readiness about online-learning system adopted at the university level during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. For the present study, the quantitative approach has been adopted and responses from 184 university students of National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, India namely Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University) and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University are collected through online questionnaire. This research study was conducted during June–August 2020. The findings of the study reveal students’ positive perception towards e-learning and thus acceptance of this new learning system. It has also empirically demonstrated the significance of e-learning in the time of COVID-19 crisis. In fact, e-learning has emerged as a new way of enhancing the learning process where social media may further improve the learning output. The findings of the study will facilitate educational institutions and policy makers to take this online-learning process to the next level in a better way.

Information and Communication Technologies have become more prevalent in the last few years and has made a great impact on society. Worldwide, a lot of education programs offer new forms of education that are frequently supported by information and communication technology (ICT) to cater to young minds. E-learning in particular has been adopted by educational institutions all over the world and it is being used as a part of “blended learning” where it is incorporated into systems along with traditional classroom learning. Nowadays, it has become more relevant than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic that the world is facing. Although these systems differ from classroom learning, they allow easy communication among teachers and students at any time necessary and provide an entire repository for students to use. For teachers, it acts as an environment for creating courses, assignments, giving feedback and grading students. In this paper, two such E-learning platforms namely Moodle and Google Classroom are compared and contrasted based on their usability and simplicity.
