Taking the First Steps into Academia

The learning curve is quite large when moving from the role of a graduate student to the role of a faculty member in academia. Preparation to move into full-time academia begins during one’s time in graduate school, and factors such as finding the right adviser and taking advantage of opportunities in research and teaching are imperative for success. Understanding the first steps in academia helps new PhD students not only to find the right position by creating a curriculum vitae and attending conferences, but also to the importance of surrounding oneself with a supportive network of scholars. A supportive environment embraces questions and celebrates both the successes and the learning opportunities that come from challenges that new faculty may face.

Although Singapore cannot be used as a model for global Islamic education, this country has quite several madrasahs. The Singapore government is also quite responsive in providing support for the continuation of Islamic education activities. This study aims to analyze the Islamic education system—madrasah management and curriculum in Singapore. Most importantly, this study identifies how the role of madrasahs in the Singapore education system is. The study in this paper is qualitative. This study uses library research, and the method of content analysis and constant comparative analysis becomes the first option of the writer. The results show that Singapore's Islamic Ugama Majlis (MUIS) plays a significant role in monitoring and managing the development of Islamic education in Singapore, which performs three types of Islamic education, Part-Time Education, Full Time Education, and Islamic Study Program for the Community. MUIS created a special curriculum by proposing the Singapore Islamic Education System (SIES) by introducing the ALIVE curriculum. The role and relevance of madrasahs cannot be underestimated or dismissed because the growing Muslim community and society will always need the right channels for real Islamic education regardless of how progressive or modern it is. This paper provides a broad view of madrasah in Singapore and looks at management, curriculum, and the role of madrasahs.

The role of a generalist in academic medicine has been diminished because of the proliferation of specialized research and treatment in the hands of the subspecialist. Yet many observers believe that this has resulted in gaps in research and teaching concerning common health problems, especially those seen in office practice. To correct this trend, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has supported for 10 years a fellowship program to prepare academic pediatric generalists. A total of 111 pediatricians have completed the fellowship. Two thirds are now in full-time academic positions. By late 1988, they had published 332 papers and had received more than $20 million in grant support. A majority of departments of pediatrics have relabeled their divisions of ambulatory pediatrics as divisions of general pediatrics and have broadened these divisions' responsibilities. In spite of some difficulty obtaining research support, the careers of these fellows and the changes in pediatric departments support the thesis that there is a need for and a rebirth of academic general pediatrics.

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the effectiveness and the necessity of forming a community when engaged in online learning. The Internet and its online communities offer new learning opportunities for many who cannot attend full-time, residential training sessions or higher education courses. Web-based course delivery affords these students and professionals the opportunity to work together, “anytime, anywhere,” exchanging information, resources, expertise, without leaving their homes or their jobs

This paper investigates the influences of elitism and merit in new accounting faculty. Building on research showing that search committees value pedigree in hiring new faculty, we theorize both aristocratic (e.g., accessing or reinforcing elite networks) and meritocratic (e.g., signaling stronger future research potential) influences on the hiring of new accounting faculty. Using curriculum vitae from 381 Accounting Ph.D. Rookie Recruiting and Research Camps, we examine whether candidates graduating from elite   accounting institutions place disproportionately higher than do their non-elite peers. Results suggest that elite   pedigree predicts placement rank among candidates  without  favorable publication outcomes at top journals (e.g. acceptance or invitation to resubmit) but not among candidates  with  favorable publication outcomes. The results suggest joint and complex aristocratic (elite-based) and meritocratic (productivity-based) influences in new accounting faculty hiring.

Purpose The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the value that human resource (HR) can provide in the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Design/methodology/approach Two complementary Towers Watson studies – the 2014 Global Workforce Study (GWS) of over 32,000 employees, and the 2014 Global Talent Management & Rewards Study (TM&R) of 1,637 organizations – formed the research basis for the article. The TM&R study was fielded from April to June 2014 in 31 markets around the world and includes responses from 1,637 participating organizations in a range of industries. The GWS covers some 32,000 employees from a population of full-time employees working in large- and mid-sized organizations across a range of industries in 26 markets around the world. It was fielded online during April and May 2014. Findings A key role of HR is ensuring that the organization has the right people performing well in leadership roles at all levels. This means HR must focus attention in five key areas: job architecture, incumbent assessment, performance definition, recognition for success and building leadership capacity. It is also up to HR to dispel the notion that “soft skills” should be subordinate to “hard skills”, which are often seen as more important. In fact, soft skills are usually more difficult to master and, in our opinion, are more important – they are what leaders need to maximize performance from others. Research limitations/implications Different observers assign a variety of roles to the HR function. These range from compliance enforcer and data administrator to strategic partner and culture creator. The author believes that HR’s most important role may well be ensuring that the organization has an ample supply of leadership and management capability at every level of the enterprise. It is leaders, who envision the future and help people generate the motivation to go there, and managers, who see to it that systems, assets and processes serve their purposes efficiently, who enable the enterprise to make the most of each employee’s contribution. Practical implications In a world where technology evolution, demographic shifts and social change are rewriting the rules of the workplace, the author can expect that the role of the HR function will also continue to change. What should not change, however, is the contribution that HR makes toward building and preserving the organization’s leadership and management capacity. In this article, the author makes the case that, despite the many shifts taking place in the business terrain, HR should remain focused on this fundamental goal, acting as ally, trusted advisor and coach. Originality/value The value of this article is to provide strategic and practical advice on how HR can influence manager and leader effectiveness.

Proper irrigation management is critical to conserve and protect water resources and to properly manage nutrients in the home landscape. How lawns and landscapes are irrigated directly impacts the natural environment, so landscape maintenance professionals and homeowners must adopt environmentally-friendly approaches to irrigation management. After selecting the right plant for the right place, water is the next critical factor to establish and maintain a healthy lawn and landscape. Fertilization is another important component of lawn and landscape maintenance, and irrigation must be applied correctly, especially following fertilization, to minimize potential nutrient losses. This publication supplements other UF/IFAS Extension publications that also include information on the role of soil and the root zone in irrigation management. This publication is designed to help UF/IFAS Extension county agents prepare materials to directly address nutrient losses from lawns and landscapes caused by inadequate irrigation management practices.
