Purpose The rapid development of 5G technology brings the expansion of the internet of things (IoT). A large number of devices in the IoT work independently, leading to difficulties in management. This study aims to optimize the member structure of the IoT so the members in it can work more efficiently. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors consider from the perspective of crowd science, combining genetic algorithms and crowd intelligence together to optimize the total intelligence of the IoT. Computing, caching and communication capacity are used as the basis of the intelligence according to the related work, and the device correlation and distance factors are used to measure the improvement level of the intelligence. Finally, they use genetic algorithm to select a collaborative state for the IoT devices. Findings Experimental results demonstrate that the intelligence optimization method in this paper can improve the IoT intelligence level up to ten times than original level. Originality/value This paper is the first study that solves the problem of device collaboration in the IoT scenario based on the scientific background of crowd intelligence. The intelligence optimization method works well in the IoT scenario, and it also has potential in other scenarios of crowd network.

Originality/value The article offers a blueprint for digital reinvention that involves rethinking customer and partner relationships from a perspective of fundamental customer need, use or aspiration.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider the Internet of Things (IOT) and its potential impact on libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents a literature review and a commentary on this topic that have been addressed by professionals, researchers and practitioners. Findings – In communicating the issues when comprehending the scope of the IOT, libraries need not succumb to the sometimes near-hysteria that surrounds the rhetoric regarding security and privacy. But, librarians must actively engage in the conversation and its subsequent actions to respond to patrons who use library networks and devices with calm, logical and transparent answers to those questions concerning what they are doing to ensure that security and privacy vulnerabilities are regularly addressed. Originality/value – The value in concentrating on this topic is to provide background and suggest several approaches to security and privacy concerns regarding the IOT.


Subject IoT ecosystem. Significance The market for the Internet of Things (IoT) or connected devices is expanding rapidly, with no manufacturer currently forecast to dominate the supply chain. This has fragmented the emerging IoT ecosystem, triggering questions about interoperability and cybersecurity of IoT devices. Impacts Firms in manufacturing, transportation and logistics and utilities are expected to see the highest IoT spending in coming years. The pace of IoT adoption is inextricably linked to that of related technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Data privacy and security will be the greatest constraint to IoT adoption.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance of the internet of things (IoT) system for smart cities and deliberate on the technological aspects involved in developing smart cities along with the framework, impact and benefits of IoT for smart cities. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on the review and synthesis of the papers on the broader areas of IoT for the application and implication towards the smart cities. The prime focus of this paper is to realize the IoT systems for smart city’s development and implementation of various technologies in the context of the Indian environment. Findings The outcome of the paper explores the highlights of the importance of the IoT system, including the technological framework, impact and benefits for smart cities. The outcome also highlights the application of IoT for smart cities. This paper provides direction regarding future degrees, potential conceivable outcomes and issues concerning the technological side of smart cities. IoT can change the lives of the people and support evolving urban areas for developing smart cities in India. Originality/value The paper deliberates on the novel techno-managerial approach towards the endeavour of smart cities using the IoT.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits of the internet of things (IoT) technology on geriatric telehealth. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory case study approach is used to understand the applicability of the internet of medical things in geriatric telehealth. Data was collected from several managers who analyzed rates of re-hospitalizations for patients using telehealth services compared to those not using telehealth services and observations of patient satisfaction rates with telehealth services. Findings Benefits from the use of IoT included significant reductions in re-hospitalization rates for older adults and patients became more engaged in maintaining their health and wellness goals while becoming more tech-savvy, empowered and satisfied with the telehealth experience. Originality/value The present manuscript is among the few reports on the benefits of IoT on geriatric health care.

With the rapid development of the internet of things (IoT), traditional industries are setting off a massive wave of digitization. In the era of the Internet of Everything, millions of devices and links in IoT pose more significant challenges to data management. Most existing solutions employ centralized systems to control IoT devices, which brings about the privacy and security issues in IoT data management. Recently, blockchain has attracted much attention in the field of IoT due to its decentralization, traceability, and non-tamperability. However, it is non-trivial to apply the current blockchain techniques to IoT due to the lack of scalability and high resource costs. Different blockchain platforms have their particular advantages in the scenario of IoT data management. In this paper, we propose a cross-chain framework to integrate multiple blockchains for efficient and secure IoT data management. Our solution builds an interactive decentralized access model which employs a consortium blockchain as the control station. Other blockchain platforms customized for specific IoT scenarios run as the backbone of all IoT devices. It is equivalent to opening the off-chain channels on the consortium blockchain. Our model merges transactions in these channels for confirmation based on the notary mechanism. Finally, we implement a prototype of the proposed model based on hyperledge Fabric and IOTA Tangle. We evaluate the performance of our method through extensive experiments. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our framework.

Purpose – The authors make the case that insourcing engineering is a strategic investment in developing a company’s core competence and innovative capacity needed to continually push the frontiers of its markets, which is essential to creating fresh marginal value under all scenarios. Design/methodology/approach – The authors layout the risks of outsourcing engineering and explain why the benefits of insourcing engineering are great and likely to grow more critical in the near future. Findings – As the Internet of Things opens vast new possibilities for differentiating nearly everything such companies might build, innovative engineering to achieve superior connectivity, functionality and invulnerability becomes critical to competitive advantage. Practical implications – Insourcing engineering not only resurrects the innovation and IP that distinguish sustainably successful market leaders, it also increases the ability to keep ideas secret until the production stage, thus allowing for full commercialization. Originality/value – A leading practitioner at General Electric describes his firm’s experience with outsourcing engineering and why it reversed course and began insourcing engineering again.

Purpose The widespread use of the internet and the rapid development of the internet of things in information technology have increased the need for network-enabled marketing. It is important to service a broad class involving logistics, buyer, seller and end-users. During various phases of the sales, purchases and marketing process, IoT will influence decision-making. Electronic commerce is a new form of trade under the development of modern information technology. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the integrated neutrosophic framework based on the internet of things (INF-IoT) has been proposed to support marketers and companies to make a powerful marketing strategy using identified data from IoT devices. Findings The experimental results show that the proposed method has high performance and very efficient. Originality/value This approach may reduce business activity to its core components, which include, in the simplest case, a value proposal, distribution channels and customers, and explain how a network of multi-actors generates a product and services, distributes and uses the value in production. Furthermore, an efficient interface is provided by the logistic module to maintain an order list.

Purpose The purpose of the study is to highlight the potential of the sensor based smartphone in assessing the covid-19 cases. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a noxious pandemic affecting the respiratory system of the human and leading to the severe acute respiratory syndrome, sometimes causing death. COVID-19 is a highly transmittable disease that spreads from an infected person to others. In this regard, a smart device is required to monitor the COVID-19 infected patients by which widespread pandemic can be reduced. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, an electrochemical sensor-enabled smartphone has been developed to assess the COVID-19 infected patients. The data-enabled smartphone uses the Internet of Things (IoT) to share the details with the other devices. The electrochemical sensor enables the smartphone to evaluate the ribonucleic acid (RNA) of COVID-19 without the nucleic acid and feeds the data into the data server by using a smartphone. Findings The obtained result identifies the infected person by using the portable electrochemical sensor-enabled smartphone, and the data is feed into the data server using the IoT. Whenever an infected person moves outside the restricted zone, the data server gives information to the concerned department. Originality/value The developed electrochemical sensor-enabled smartphone gives an accuracy of 81% in assessing the COVID-19 cases. Thus, through the developed approach, a COVID-19 infected person can be identified and the spread can be minimized.

Rapid development of the Internet of Things not only provides large amounts of data to the job-shop scheduling, but also proposes a great challenge for dynamic job shop scheduling. A dynamic job shop scheduling approach is proposed based on the data-driven genetic algorithm. Application examples suggest that this approach is correct, feasible and available. This approach can provide the technical support for the long-term development of enterprises in the field of intelligent production.
