How can and must critical qualitative inquiry be part of ongoing struggles for cultural and educational justice with the communities of our work? We explore this question by reflecting on our collaborative research on culturally sustaining pedagogy centered in the study of Black Language (BL). Building on the core humanizing research notion of dialogic consciousness-raising between researchers and participants, we describe the ways the three of us came to deepened knowledge about the role of BL in our lives and in the lives of the high school students we worked with through a humanizing research as culturally sustaining pedagogy framework. In this framework, the ability to participate in BL, research-based knowledge about BL, and critical collaborative research on BL joined reciprocal inquiry with teaching and learning to center the value of our Black language and Black lives within a schooling and research enterprise that often devalues both.

Papel do inglês.   Abstract This paper aims at reflecting on the role of English in contemporary Brazilian education. The study reviews language and internationalization policies suggesting that there is a tension between the formative role and the instrumental role of English in education today. In order to subsidize the proposed reflection, the study analyzes data from two questionnaires with questions related to teaching and learning foreign languages in Brazil. A hybrid methodology was used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data from the questionnaires answered by 65 participants of whom 43 were high school students from a community with Pomeranian immigrants and 22 were English teachers. The analysis of the questionnaires suggests that Brazilians want to learn English as a foreign language and see that language as having the status of an international language. Results show that the main difference between the teaching of this language in Brazil is related to its formative role (in basic education) and its instrumental role (in private language institutes and international programs), confirming the hypothesis raised in the analysis of language policies that there is a tension between the formative and instrumental roles of English in Brazilian education. Keywords: Formation. Internationalization. Education. Role of English.

The purpose of this study was to explore how high school students mentored beginning fifth-grade students in an extracurricular music class for double-reed instruments. In this study, I investigated the role of peer mentoring with how high school mentors shared their knowledge and experiences, and the role of the teacher in this process. The following questions guided this study: How did the participants share their knowledge and experiences during peer mentoring? How did the teacher serve as a guide for the student participants during peer mentoring? Data collection included observations and interviews during one semester of instruction, and analysis of the data collected involved a system of coding from which two themes developed: mentoring concurrent with director teaching and learning while mentoring. In addition, findings indicated that the participants used knowledge learned from outside sources, they reinforced content presented by the teacher, and they drew on their own musical knowledge during the process. Under the guidance of the teacher, the participants also learned how to share their knowledge that in turn helped elevate their individual levels of musicianship. Implications for music teachers suggest the use of peer mentoring to help create meaningful learning experiences in their classrooms and increase interaction among students.

The Role of Aesthetics in the Teaching and Learning of MathematicsWe present an exploration of the role of aesthetics in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. Firstly, we review the state of the issue. Subsequently, through a questionnaire, we obtain that among the aesthetic criteria that appear in the literature is the one related to simplicity that seems to be shared by high school students of middle and low academic qualifications. Finally, through a case study, we observe that through mathematical contents, in this case the tessellations of the plane, we see in students of high school the appearance of aesthetic considerations and experiences.Handle: http://hdl.handle.net/10481/48170WOS-ESCIScopus record and citations

Previous studies have found some risk factors of cyberbullying. However, little is known about how mother phubbing may influence adolescent cyberbullying, and the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship. “Phubbing,” which is a portmanteau of “phone” and “subbing,” refers to snubbing other people and focus on smartphones in social interactions. This study examined whether mother phubbing, which refers to being phubbed by one’s mother, would be positively related to adolescent cyberbullying, whether perceived mother acceptance would mediate the relationship between mother phubbing and adolescent cyberbullying, and whether emotional stability would moderate the pathways between mother phubbing and adolescent cyberbullying. The sample consisted of 4,213 Chinese senior high school students (mean age 16.41 years, SD = 0.77, 53% were female). Participants completed measurements regarding mother phubbing, cyberbullying, perceived mother acceptance, and emotional stability. The results indicated that mother phubbing was positively related to cyberbullying, which was mediated by perceived mother acceptance. Further, moderated mediation analyses showed that emotional stability moderated the direct path between mother phubbing and cyberbullying and the indirect path between mother phubbing and perceived mother acceptance. This study highlighted the harmful impact of mother phubbing on adolescents by showing a positive association between mother phubbing and adolescent cyberbullying, as well as the underlying mechanisms between mother phubbing and adolescent cyberbullying.
