The concept of sustainability is referred to the basic functions of human resources (HR)— recruitment, motivation, assessment and control. They should embrace sustainability, not just for organisational effectiveness and long-term economic benefits, but also for ethical reasons. Owing to SHRM, the awareness and behaviour of the whole organisation may strongly express SD goals in planning and implementing the whole corporate strategy. Frequently, the term ‘sustainable practices’ in SHRM is congruent with CSR. The main goal of the chapter is to explain how Sustainable Development Goals can be implemented in human resource management (HRM) and translated into sustainable human resource management (SHRM).

Human resource management (HRM) is an important source of competitive advantage. However, recent reports document that HRM, and in particular employee training, is less likely to occur in small firms. One possible remedy of special interest to small retailers is trade name franchise membership. Trade name franchises, or buying groups, claim to offer small firms advantages not otherwise realizable, including bulk buying discounts, brand name recognition and workforce training. We report results from our study of over 300 small and medium-sized hardware stores, which tested the effects of employee training and trade name franchise membership, on small firm performance. Trade name franchisees achieve higher mean performance; however, the contribution to performance made by franchisees’ training does not appear to be significantly better than that of independent stores.

Human resource management in agriculture and associated risks are under-researched topics. To identify the sources of human resource management risks confronting dairy farms, gain insights into how dairy farmers perceive the impacts of these risks, and identify control strategies, four focus group discussions were held with dairy farm managers. Managers' perceptions served to develop a framework for the analysis of human resource management risks in agriculture and derive recommendations for reducing these risks. Results of this study have been used to tailor educational programs for farmers and suggest strategies for future research.
