A New Recipe for Friction-Reducer Suppliers: Polymer Plus Frac Water, Minus the Cost

The argument for making friction reducer on site is simple: only one truck is required to deliver dry polymer vs. three loads required for the same amount of liquid additive. For Downhole Chemical Solutions (DCS), reducing the number of trips and the amount of chemicals needed to create a stable liquid by mixing it as needed on site reduces the average cost of a gallon of friction reducer by around 30%, said Mark Van Domelen, vice president of technology for DCS. “The business is very cutthroat and competitive on the pricing of polyacrylamide. We can reduce the cost further on friction reducer,” using dry polymer, he said. Polyacrylamide is generally described as the key component in friction reducers. Suppliers also add some ingredients to create a stable liquid and others that are supposed to improve performance. When DCS delivers dry polymer to a well pad to mix it on-site, the only other ingredient is water provided by the customer. It has been a winning strategy change for the private company; it has grown rapidly, even during last year’s slump. DCS increased the number of mixing units from one to 16, and dry polymer sales have grown from 10% to 90%, Van Domelen said. One of the company’s customers is John Blevins, the chief operating officer for Houston-based Hibernia Resources III and an early adopter who was a lead author of a paper on making friction reducer on site while fracturing (SPE 204176). Blevin, who uses the words “friction reducer” and “polymer” interchangeably, is the rare C-level executive who likes to manage operations from a frac van at a company that normally completes one pad at a time. The polymer is polyacrylamide. When Blevin works with DCS on a well, he purchases it directly from one of the few chemical companies that will produce the polymer based on his specifications. The price on the DCS invoice will be a price per pound that covers the cost of the polymer and the service. At Hibernia, a small private-equity and employee-owned company, there is a powerful incentive to pay close attention to the details. “When we spend a nickel, that nickel is divided among us at some point in time. If we are efficiently frugal, we are going to be better off in the long run,” Blevins said. The paper, which was presented at the Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC), included a chart showing stage-by-stage costs, with the average cost for dry stages ranging from 27% to 31% lower than similar stages that were fractured using liquids. The simplicity of the mix is a plus for Blevins whose company is especially focused on how chemicals are likely to react downhole. “We did a 6-month study before we pumped anything in the ground to make sure we had the right combination” of fracturing additives, he said. “We do study nearly every well and every landing zone to ensure the chemicals used are compatible.”

The present study examines the effect of agency-level implementation variation on the cost-effectiveness of an evidence-based parent training program (Positive Parenting Program: “Triple P”). Staff from six community-based agencies participated in a five-day training to prepare them to deliver a 12-week Triple P parent training group to caregivers. Prior to the training, administrators and staff from four of the agencies completed a site readiness process intended to prepare them for the implementation demands of successfully delivering the group, while the other two agencies did not complete the process. Following the delivery of each agency’s first Triple P group, the graduation rate and average cost per class graduate were calculated. The average cost-per-graduate was over seven times higher for the two agencies that had not completed the readiness process than for the four completing agencies ($7,811 vs. $1,052). The contrast in costs was due to high participant attrition in the Triple P groups delivered by the two agencies that did not complete the readiness process. The odds of Triple P participants graduating were 12.2 times greater for those in groups run by sites that had completed the readiness process. This differential attrition was not accounted for by between-group differences in participant characteristics at pretest. While the natural design of this study limits the ability to empirically test all alternative explanations, these findings indicate a striking cost savings for sites completing the readiness process and support the thoughtful application of readiness procedures in the early stages of an implementation initiative.


The results revealed that on an overall average size of landholding was estimated to be 0.97 ha. The total cultivated area at all categories of sample farms were found to be irrigated. Overall average, cost of cultivation was estimated `27819.43 per ha. The cost of cultivation showed positive relation with size of holding. The cost of cultivation was highest on medium farms (`32549.25) followed by small (`31528.40 and marginal (`29171.74), respectively. Overall average, cost of production was estimated `2446.44 per hectare. On an average input-output ratio on the basis Costs A1/A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 were recorded 1:2.86, 1:2.77, 1:1.91, 1:1.89 and 1:1.46, respectively. On the basis of Cost C2 input-output ratio was highest on marginal farms (1:1.47) followed by small (1:1.44) and medium (1:1.43), respectively. Overall average, net income and gross income were found `9859.33 and 40028.69 per ha, respectively.

Objective To compare the cost-effectiveness of sialendoscopy with gland excision for the management of submandibular gland sialolithiasis. Study Design Cost-effectiveness analysis. Setting Outpatient surgery centers. Methods A Markov decision model compared the cost-effectiveness of sialendoscopy versus gland excision for managing submandibular gland sialolithiasis. Surgical outcome probabilities were found in the primary literature. The quality of life of patients was represented by health utilities, and costs were estimated from a third-party payer’s perspective. The effectiveness of each intervention was measured in quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). The incremental costs and effectiveness of each intervention were compared, and a willingness-to-pay ratio of $150,000 per QALY was considered cost-effective. One-way, multivariate, and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed to challenge model conclusions. Results Over 10 years, sialendoscopy yielded 9.00 QALYs at an average cost of $8306, while gland excision produced 8.94 QALYs at an average cost of $6103. The ICER for sialendoscopy was $36,717 per QALY gained, making sialendoscopy cost-effective by our best estimates. The model was sensitive to the probability of success and the cost of sialendoscopy. Sialendoscopy must meet a probability-of-success threshold of 0.61 (61%) and cost ≤$11,996 to remain cost-effective. A Monte Carlo simulation revealed sialendoscopy to be cost-effective 60% of the time. Conclusion Sialendoscopy appears to be a cost-effective management strategy for sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland when certain thresholds are maintained. Further studies elucidating the clinical factors that determine successful sialendoscopy may be aided by these thresholds as well as future comparisons of novel technology.

The cost of drugs prescribed by general practitioners in England rose by 13.4% between 1991 and 1992, bringing the total amount spent on medicines prescribed in the community last year to £2858 million. In the same period the number of items dispensed rose by 4.6%, or 4.2% per head of population, and the average cost per item increased by 8.5%, from £6.20 to £6.72. These figures are contained in the latest issue of the Statistical Bulletin,1 published annually by the Department of Health.

The reasons that were given then for this separation seem still valid today in view of the maintenance of the same practice in the 1982 Accounting Plan. The most important justifications were the following: 1. It facilitated the establishment and further modification of the cost accounting system; 2. The CNOF Plan was very well designed; however, to preserve the recent tradition introduced by the 1942 Plan, only some of its features were retained in the 1947 Plan. The influence of the CNOF Plan and of the 1942 Plan on the 1947 Plan will be consid­ ered after introducing the latter. THE 1947 ACCOUNTING PLAN As the first official plan drafted after the Liberation, the 1947 Plan constituted the real beginning of accounting normalization in France. It was initially designed for industrial and commercial undertakings, but with the intention of adapting the plan to all sectors of the economy. The ultimate goal of the Committee for the Normalization of Accounting was to create a system that would allow the summation of the accounts of all economic units, thereby facilitating the preparation of national accounts. The Committee was headed by its vice-president, Turpin, who was secretary of the Central Committee for Prices. The secretary of the Committee was Pujol, a state economic expert and former secretary of the adaptation committee for the 1942 Plan. PURPOSE: To determine the cost of outpatient RBC transfusion from the provider’s perspective at a major urban, academic cancer center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 517 cancer patients with hematologic or solid tumors who received blood during fiscal year 1995 to 1996. A process-flow diagram was developed, and cost and utilization data for 12 months were collected and analyzed. A structured interview process was used to identify all direct and indirect costs from within the inpatient unit, blood bank, and outpatient clinic. Average costs were computed for the entire sample and for specific subgroups. RESULTS: In 1998 dollars, the average cost per RBC unit was $469 for adults and $568 for pediatric cancer patients. Adults and children generally received two and one RBC units per transfusion, respectively. Therefore, the average cost of a two-unit transfusion was $938 for adults. Patients with hematologic tumors required more RBC units (7.1 RBC units per year) at a higher average cost ($512 per RBC unit) than patients with solid tumors (4.7 RBC units per year, $474 per RBC unit). Further variations across tumor types were observed. Overhead, direct material, and direct labor represented 46%, 19%, and 35% of total costs respectively. CONCLUSION: The cost of outpatient RBC transfusions in cancer patients is higher than previously reported, in part because overhead costs and fixed costs might have been underestimated in previous studies. Furthermore, age, tumor type, and geographic variations in the cost of fixed assets and labor have a substantial impact on the cost of blood. The results indicate that the cost-effectiveness of alternatives to transfusions in the management of cancer patients may have been underestimated in the existing literature.

Most finance textbooks present the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) calculation as: WACC = Kd×(1-T)×D% + Ke×E%, where Kd is the cost of debt before taxes, T is the tax rate, D% is the percentage of debt on total value, Ke is the cost of equity and E% is the percentage of equity on total value. All of them precise (but not with enough emphasis) that the values to calculate D% y E% are market values. Although they devote special space and thought to calculate Kd and Ke, little effort is made to the correct calculation of market values. This means that there are several points that are not sufficiently dealt with: Market values, location in time, occurrence of tax payments, WACC changes in time and the circularity in calculating WACC. The purpose of this note is to clear up these ideas, solve the circularity problem and emphasize in some ideas that usually are looked over. Also, some suggestions are presented on how to calculate, or estimate, the equity cost of capital.

Objective To analyze the direct cost of reusable and disposable aprons in a public teaching hospital. Method Cross-sectional study of quantitative approach, focusing on the direct cost of reusable and disposable aprons at a teaching hospital in northern Paraná. The study population consisted of secondary data collected in reports of the cost of services, laundry, materials and supplies division of the institution for the year 2012 Results We identified a lower average cost of using disposable apron when compared to the reusable apron. The direct cost of reusable apron was R$ 3.06, and the steps of preparation and washing were mainly responsible for the high cost, and disposable apron cost was R$ 0.94. Conclusion The results presented are important for hospital managers properly allocate resources and manage costs in hospitals

In light of recent reporting of the failures of some of the major publicly-held companies in the U.S. (e.g., Enron & WorldCom), it has become increasingly important that management, auditors, analysts, and regulators be able to assess and identify fraudulent financial reporting. The Enron and WorldCom failures illustrate that financial reporting fraud could have disastrous consequences both for stockholders and employees. These recent failures have not only adversely affected the U.S. accounting profession but have also raised serious questions about the credibility of financial statements. KPMG (2003) reports seven broad categories of fraud experienced by U.S. businesses and governments: employee fraud (60%), consumer fraud (32%), third-party fraud (25%), computer crime (18%), misconduct (15%), medical/insurance fraud (12%), and financial reporting fraud (7%). Even though it occurred with least frequency, the average cost of financial reporting fraud was the highest, at $257 million, followed by the cost of medical/insurance fraud (average cost of $33.7 million).
