To master English language, students cannot only learn English from what is learned in the classroom given by the teacher. They need to explore many things to support their understanding about language. Therefore, independent learning skill is crucially needed. The students are the one who knows what they need to study according to their priority. However, sometimes, it is hard for students to build their independent learning skill since there is no encouragement from the teacher to promote it, and also students’ lack of awareness related to what they are learning. The role of technology like online learning application nowadays really helps teachers and students overcome this problem. This study is aimed to explore the use of language learning application named Memrise to enhance students’ autonomous learning skill outside the class, especially in studying English. A descriptive study was conducted to eighteen Management students taking English for Business II subject. The data gained from questioner and interview showed that Memrise helps students learn English and especially improve their vocabulary. Moreover, because it can be accessed anywhere and anytime, students can always learn English whenever they want to. Thus, it really supports students’ independent learning skill and boosts their English skills.

ABSTRACTIndependent English Language Learning is very important to do by students, especially students in higher education level, because they are often required to read many English references and use English on many occasions, for example in writing essays. Also, it is because the opportunity or time to learn English in the class is very limited. Therefore, students badly need to learn English independently outside the classroom. This study was designed to investigate the students’ perception of the use of “English Phrasal Verb” videos in enhancing their independent learning. There were six participants interviewed and observed to get information about the benefits of using “English Phrasal Verb” videos and the effectiveness of it in training the students to be independent learners. The study found that the students’ pronunciation and vocabulary mastery had improved as well as their listening and writing skills due to the use of videos and assignment given. It also revealed that the use of videos had successfully been a trigger for the students to find other English learning videos and learn them independently outside the classroom.ABSTRAKBelajar Bahasa Inggris secara mandiri sangat penting dilakukan oleh siswa, khususnya mahasiswa, karena mereka sering diminta untuk membaca banyak referensi Berbahasa Inggris dan untuk menggunakan Bahasa Inggris di banyak kesempatan, contohnya dalam menulis esai. This study investigates the overall use of project-based work in enhancing Moroccan high school students’ autonomous learning and attenuating their being over-reliant on teachers. It was observed, in two Moroccan high schools, -where the study was carried out-, as is the case in many other English foreign language contexts, that students were generally unable to learn by themselves, and that teachers were the solemn imparters of knowledge and learners were merely passive receivers of that knowledge. The study involved a sample of 30 students from science stream belonging to two adjacent high schools, which are located in a big city in Morocco. In the absence of a standard framework on how to implement project-based work properly, effective ways on how project work can improve independent learning proved useful in this study. In order to collect data for the study, three major instruments were employed, involving students and teachers, namely observation, interviews, and survey questionnaires. The data analysis highlighted the importance of project-based strategy in boosting students’ autonomous learning, through analyzing interview excerpts of teachers’ and students’ experience with the concept The research findings revealed that teachers assigned projects for students but did not identify each student’s role within a group, which deepened students’ disorientation, and reinforced sheer dependence on the teachers. The interviews showed as well the difficulties teachers encountered when assigning projects. This study is but a roadmap to teachers who are willing to increase students’ autonomy and improve the quality of the teaching-learning situation. The study also identifies the role of the teacher and the stages that should be followed to a better achievement of results.

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach has become a much debated feature of the education system in recent years. The study reported here examines the role of CLIL within the context of the Kurdistan Educational System. In particular, it investigates CLIL implementation in Kurdistan’s schools and its impact on the acquisition of the English language, contents of main subjects at the individual level, students and teachers, and the whole educational system. The study does not examine the impact of CLIL within the Kurdish education system, but a possible role for it. In order to do this, it first reviews the existing theoretical viewpoints on CLIL and its significance in language learning through the study of content of other subjects. A framework is then developed to describe the current situation of the Kurdistan Educational System and review CLIL in a different context. Data is obtained mainly through questionnaires to teachers and students in the Kurdistan Educational System and semi-structured interviews with two Spanish students who had experience in CLIL. All collected perceptions are analysed and implications for the usefulness of CLIL for Kurdistan Education System, teachers’ and students’ perspective on implementing CLIL in Kurdistan’s school and how CLIL be implemented in Kurdistan. Data from the study suggests that studying the content of some of the main subjects in Kurdistan’s schools provides more opportunity to expand intellectual horizons of students while improving their English language skills and knowledge. Owing to these reasons, integrating learning language and content from early age in schools will impact the entire education and higher education systems in Kurdistan. This is the first study to investigate the role of CLIL in the Kurdish context and further longitudinal studies are required to improve our understanding of the implications of the wider introduction, role, and advantages of implementing CLIL in Kurdistan and how to incorporate CLIL into Kurdish education policy.

Up to this present time, self access language learning (SALL) has become an interesting topic for study. Many scholars have devoted their attention to the study on this topic that many of their papers are published in Studies in Self Access Learning journal. Though many studies have discussed this topic, the websites that can be integrated into SALL as a strategic way to ficilitate the autonomous learning remains underresearched. This paper is based on a research looking at the integration of websites into SALL from the perspective of SALL materials in an online SALL centre. It looks at which English language skills are offered as SALL materials and which websites provide SALL materials. The data concerning these two themes were collected from the online visit to to Self Access Centre and INdependent Learning (SACIL) set up at the University of Waikato. SALL materials in SACIL include general language skills, grammar, reading, listening, speaking and pronunciation, writing, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling, IELTS, and study skills and exam preparation which are linked to a large number of websites. With these website-based SALL materials, the learners over the world can finally practice their skill autonomously.Key words: website, self access laguage learning, autonomous learning.

Accurate pronunciation has a vital role in English language learning as it can help learners to avoid misunderstanding in communication. However, EFL learners in many contexts, especially at the University of Phan Thiet, still encounter many difficulties in pronouncing English correctly. Therefore, this study endeavors to explore English-majored students’ perceptions towards the role of pronunciation in English language learning and examine their pronunciation practicing strategies (PPS). It involved 155 English-majored students at the University of Phan Thiet who answered closed-ended questionnaires and 18 English-majored students who participated in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that students strongly believed in the important role of pronunciation in English language learning; however, they sometimes employed PPS for their pronunciation improvement. Furthermore, the results showed that participants tended to use naturalistic practicing strategies and formal practicing strategies with sounds, but they overlooked strategies such as asking for help and cooperating with peers. Such findings could contribute further to the understanding of how students perceive the role of pronunciation and their PPS use in the research’s context and other similar ones.
