We address the problem of efficiently and informatively quantifying how multiplets of variables carry information about the future of the dynamical system they belong to. In particular we want to identify groups of variables carrying redundant or synergistic information, and track how the size and the composition of these multiplets changes as the collective behavior of the system evolves. In order to afford a parsimonious expansion of shared information, and at the same time control for lagged interactions and common effect, we develop a dynamical, conditioned version of the O-information, a framework recently proposed to quantify high-order interdependencies via multivariate extension of the mutual information. The dynamic O-information, here introduced, allows to separate multiplets of variables which influence synergistically the future of the system from redundant multiplets. We apply this framework to a dataset of spiking neurons from a monkey performing a perceptual discrimination task. The method identifies synergistic multiplets that include neurons previously categorized as containing little relevant information individually.

The chapter provides an overview of how policy analysis takes place in Mexican Think Tanks. It focuses on two of the few organisations of this kind that currently exist in the country: the Centro de Investigación para el Desarrollo (CIDAC, or Centre for Research for Development) and the Centro de Estudios Espinosa Yglesias (CEEY, or Centre of Studies Espinosa Yglesias). The chapter is divided into four sections. The first discusses the main features of think tanks, with a particular focus on the Mexican ones. The second presents the origins and general objectives of CIDAC and CEEY, and describes how these two organizations conduct policy analysis. The third compares both cases, paying particular attention to how they define their topics of interest, how they gather relevant information, what kind of policy products they generate, what kind of communication channels they use, and how they assess the impact that their analyses may have had. The chapter closes with some conclusions and general remarks about the future challenges of policy analysis in Mexican think tanks.

Fog Computing is the distributed computing layer that lies between the user and the cloud. A successful fog architecture reduces delay or latency and increases efficiency. This paper describes the development and implementation of a distributed computing architecture applied to an automation environment that uses Fog Computing as an intermediary with the cloud computing layer. This study used a Raspberry Pi V3 board connected to end control elements such as servomotors and relays, indicators and thermal sensors. All is controlled by an automation framework that receives orders from Siri and executes them through predetermined instructions. The cloud connection benefits from a reduced amount of data transmission, because it only receives relevant information for analysis.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine the type of information Library and Information Science professionals share in the WhatsApp groups in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a quantitative content analysis research design. With a total of 739 participants, 1,385 posts of six different WhatsApp groups of Library and Information Science professionals for three months were analyzed. Findings The study found that the most shared information among the Library and Information Science professionals in Nigeria is post on professional information. This demonstrates that librarians are determined to share professional information among them to promote the profession. This was followed by political information basically on the Nigerian Library Association national executives’ election, and job advertisements related to the library. Although a few members violate the rules by posting the kind of information not required in the WhatsApp group, the erring members are quickly called to order and warned by the WhatsApp group administrator. Social implications Professional ties can grow among information specialists and library practitioners through participation in virtual communities such as WhatsApp group. The implication of this work is in showing that social media especially WhatsApp groups can be used as a knowledge sharing mechanism to share timely, current and relevant information among professionals in different occupations. Originality/value Findings on the use of WhatsApp group in sharing professional information will inform several other Library and Information Science professionals in other countries of the need to adopt this channel to disseminate timely information related to up-coming conferences, training opportunities, workshops, call for papers and so on among the professionals. The results of this paper are valuable for anyone interested in an avenue to share or receive much quicker and pertinent information that saves the time of professionals in any occupation.

Context.— Use of social media in the medical profession is an increasingly prevalent and sometimes controversial practice. Many doctors believe social media is the future and embrace it as an educational and collaborative tool. Others maintain reservations concerning issues such as patient confidentiality, and legal and ethical risks. Objective.— To explore the utility of social media as an educational and collaborative tool in dermatopathology. Design.— We constructed 2 identical surveys containing questions pertaining to the responders' demographics and opinions regarding the use of social media for dermatopathology. The surveys were available on Twitter and Facebook for a period of 10 days. Results.— The survey was completed by 131 medical professionals from 29 different countries: the majority (81%, 106 of 131) were 25 to 45 years of age. Most replied that they access Facebook or Twitter several times a day (68%, 89 of 131) for both professional and social purposes (77%, 101 of 131). The majority agreed that social media provides useful and relevant information, but stated limitations they would like addressed. Conclusions.— Social media is a powerful tool with the ability to instantaneously share dermatopathology with medical professionals across the world. This study reveals the opinions and characteristics of the population of medical professionals currently using social media for education and collaboration in dermatopathology.

Internet of Things (IoT) concept has attracted a lot of attention in recent years and it is foreseen as one of the technologies that will leverage the Future Internet. It is seen as a major enabler of novel applications and services that will foster efficiency and will ease every day’s life. However, current IoT solutions are mainly focusing on the development of centralized solutions that do not promote the democratization of the IoT but rather concentrate the IoT around a set of cloud-based platforms which pretend to be open but limit the capacity of the people to tailor their Personal and Communal IoT. This paper describes a software platform based on available generic enablers as defined by the FIWARE initiative. It extends the existing architecture models to accommodate the requirements stemming from the vision of people-sourced IoT devices which are shared to create applications and services in smart communities where the owners of the shared devices are always empowered to control who, and in which circumstances, has access to the shared information.

We introduce EWall, an experimental visual analytics environment for the support of remote-collaborative sense-making activities. EWall is designed to foster and support ‘ object focused thinking’, where users represent and understand information as objects, construct and recognize contextual relationships among objects, as well as communicate through objects. EWall also offers a unified infrastructure for the implementation and testing of computational agents that consolidate user contributions and manage the flow of information among users through the creation and management of a ‘ virtual transactive memory’. EWall users operate their individual graphical interfaces to collect, abstract, organize and comprehend task-relevant information relative to their areas of expertise. A first type of computational agents infers possible relationships among information items through the analysis of the spatial and temporal organization and collaborative use of information. All information items and relationships converge in a shared database. A second type of computational agents evaluates the contents of the shared database and provides individual users with a customized selection of potentially relevant information. A learning mechanism allows the computational agents to adapt to particular users and circumstances. EWall is designed to enable individual users to navigate vast amounts of shared information effectively and help remotely dispersed team members combine their contributions, work independently without diverting from common objectives, and minimize the necessary amount of verbal communication.
