Improvements in the survival and clinical outcomes of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients raised questions about their workforce participation and capacity to work. One hundred and ninety-six outpatients, attending the Adult CF Center of an Italian University Hospital, were enrolled between May 2020 and March 2021. The patients’ personal and clinical characteristics, employment status, and profession were assessed. The Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire—Revised and the work ability index (WAI) were employed to assess CF health-related quality of life and the employee’s perception of their ability to work, respectively. Among the enrolled patients, 98 (50%) were employed. The non-working subjects were significantly younger (mean age ± standard deviation: 30 ± 10 vs. 37 ± 10 years) and were diagnosed with CF significantly earlier (9 ± 13 vs. 17 ± 18 years) than the employed subjects. The vast majority of CF workers (82.6%) were employed in tertiary professions. A general good work ability perception was determined in the employed population. Aging and being employed for >15 years could significantly predict a reduction in work ability, while a better quality of life was a positive predictor for its enhancement. Although further research is necessary, these results may introduce interdisciplinary CF healthcare management that includes a work function assessment, formal career counseling, and job guidance to support the personal, social and professional lives of CF patients.

Abstract Introduction Shift work can influence the health and well-being of individuals due to changes in biological rhythms, causing psychological and physical disruption, hampering family relationship, social and work ability. However, the shift work of auxiliary of direct / educational action of Private Social Solidarity Institution (PSSI) is essential to ensure continuity in the provision of the best hygienic and health care to the users of these institutions every day. Objectives The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of life and the work capacity of Direct-Action Assistants (n = 29). Methodology Respondents were subjected a monitoring of the heart function PB – Blood Pressure for 24 hours and answered a questionnaire (Work Ability Index and Quality of Life Index). Results Of the 29 workers evaluated 90% were women and 10% men, aged 45.5 (± 10.47) years and exercise time of 7.1 (± 3.18) years. Physical examination revealed a mean 24 h Systolic Blood Pressure of 119.3 (± 11.8) mm Hg and 24 h Diastolic Blood Pressure of 72.6 (± 7.3) mm Hg. The mean Body Mass Index (BMI) (kg / m2) was 25.6 (± 3.5), and 24.1% of the participants were overweight and 13.7% obesity grade I. From this analysis, we found that overweight individuals have a tendency to increase the Blood Pressure compared to normal weight individuals. Although the working class has a good ability to work 69%, they are not optimistic about the future. Conclusion We concluded that workers can be adjusted the constant changes of schedules established by their institutions, and are able to carry out their work, however, individuals with 6 or more years of work in the present-day regime shifts already feel some symptoms of physical and psychological wear, and thus speeding up their aging.

IntroductionFatigue is a common and debilitating problem in cancer survivors. Research show that this symptom endures even in disease-free patients affecting quality of life. Returning to work is physically and emotionally demanding for this population and fatigue levels seems to predict the time taken to return to work and the ability of the worker.ObjectiveOur main objective was to explore the direct effect of the fatigue on work ability and quality of life of professionally active cancer survivors. Aims Fatigue levels, work ability and overall quality of life of survivors group were compared with a sample of individuals without cancer history. Relationship between fatigue symptoms and work ability and quality of life were examined within of the survivors group.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 57 cancer survivors and 57 controls (n = 114) and data was collected from two Central Hospitals of Portugal. Participants completed the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue, the Work Ability Index and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General.ResultsCancer survivors reported higher levels of fatigue than controls and worse work ability and quality of life (P < .001). Controlling the effect of the age and gender, fatigue of the cancer survivors group influenced negatively their overall quality of life (β= –.315, P= .013, R2= .143) but not their work ability.ConclusionsAlthough the fatigue has not affected directly the work ability of the cancer survivors, two years or more after the conclusion of the treatments, this symptom has a significant effect on the quality of life.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The aim of our study was (1) to test the possibilities of standardized questionnaires for burnout, quality of life, and work ability in Serbia by investigating interactions of these phenomena in food manufacturing workers in Serbia; and (2) to determine possible preventive measures. The study enrolled 489 food manufacturing workers in the region of Niš (Serbia) during the period from January 2008 to February 2009. We included three standardized questionnaires: for burnout (CBI), quality of life (ComQoL-A5), and the work ability index (WAI) in the Serbian language. The results of our study indicate high scores in personal (60.0) and work burnout (67.9), lower scores for objective (66.2%SM) and subjective quality of life in enrolled subjects (69.2%SM), and an excellent work ability index in most workers (65.8%). The questionnaires tested are reliable instruments in the Serbian region. Burnout, quality of life, and work ability are significantly interrelated categories in food manufacturing workers. There is a high degree of work burnout that has not yet been accompanied with significant impairment of quality of living and work ability in exposed workers. That is why a salutogenic approach in the prevention of this phenomenon, by health-promotion programs in the workplace, would be the method of choice for burnout improvement.

This study evaluates the association of Non Carious Cervical Lesions (NCCLs), Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) and Work Ability Index (WAI) in a Brazilian population of Workers. One hundred workers were evaluated in a CEREST (Worker´s Health Reference Center). Participants were examined for oral disease following WHO recommendations, and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) and Work Ability Index assessment was used to determine OHRQoL and capacity to work, respectively. Assessment of tobacco use and alcohol consumption was made by Fagestron tolerance and Audit test. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA version 13.0. Dimensions with highest OHIP scores were physical pain and psychological discomfort. In bivariate analyses, NCCLs was significant associated with OHIP-14 severity PR 3.8 (CI95%1.26-11.89) and with self-related of oral pain PR 2.16 (CI95% 1.06-4.40). In the multivariate logistic regression analyses, years of smoking habits OR 1.73 (CI95% 1.03-2.9) was significant associated with OHIP-14 severity, independent of other variables.  OHIP14 was significant associated to WAI (p=0,02). Strategies for Monitoring oral health Brazilian workers and reduce tobacco use should be done by Brazilian Companies to support Work ability. For future investigations on OHRQoL, analyses of NCCLs should be included.Descriptors: Quality of Life; Oral Health; Occupational Dentistry; Occupational Health; Tooth Erosion.

AbstractCancer-related malnutrition has a high prevalence, reduces survival and increases side effects. The aim of this study was to assess oncology outpatients and risk of malnutrition. Reported symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in patients found to be at risk of malnutrition or malnourished were compared to patients without malnutrition. Using a standardized questionnaire, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire for Quality of Life and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), patients in an outpatient cancer clinic undergoing chemotherapy treatment at a German University Hospital were assessed for nutrition, risk of malnutrition and quality of life. Based on the MNA, 39 (45.9%) patients were categorized as malnourished or at risk for malnutrition. Loss of appetite (n = 37.6%, p < 0.001) and altered taste sensation (n = 30,3%, p < 0.001) were the symptoms most frequently associated with reduced food intake. Patients with risk of malnutrition scored lower on the global health status (n = 48.15%, p = 0.001). Side effects of cancer treatments lead to a higher risk of malnutrition and as a consequence lower QoL. These side effects should be addressed more efficiently in cancer care.

Abstract Background Pregnant women experience physical, physiological, and mental changes. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a relevant indicator of psychological and physical behaviours, changing over the course of pregnancy. This study aims to assess HRQoL of pregnant women during different stages of pregnancy. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed using the The EuroQoL Group’s five-dimension five-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) to assess the HRQoL of pregnant women, and demographic data were collected. This study was conducted in a regional university hospital in Guangzhou, China. Results A total of 908 pregnant women were included in this study. Pregnant women in the early 2nd trimester had the highest HRQoL. The HRQoL of pregnant women rose from the 1st trimester to the early 2nd trimester, and dropped to the bottom at the late 3rd trimester due to some physical and mental changes. Reports of pain/discomfort problem were the most common (46.0%) while self-care were the least concern. More than 10% of pregnant women in the 1st trimester had health-related problems in at least one dimension of whole five dimensions. In the whole sample, the EuroQoL Group’s visual analog scale (EQ-VAS) was 87.86 ± 9.16. Across the gestational stages, the HRQoL remained stable during the pregnancy but the highest value was observed in the 1st trimester (89.65 ± 10.13) while the lowest was in the late 3rd trimester (87.28 ± 9.13). Conclusions During pregnancy, HRQoL were associated with gestational trimesters in a certain degree. HRQoL was the highest in the early 2nd trimester and then decreased to the lowest in the late 3rd trimester due to a series of physical and psychological changes. Therefore, obstetric doctors and medical institutions should give more attention and care to pregnant women in the late 3rd trimester.
