Low self-care and treatment adherence are found among hemodialysis patients. We aimed to identify the factors influencing self-care behavior and treatment adherence and examine the mediating effect of treatment adherence on self-care behavior. A questionnaire was administered through a social media community from 11 July to 13 August 2021. The data collected from 100 participants were analyzed using the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation, multiple linear regression analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The mean self-care behavior and treatment adherence scores were 3.52 ± 0.57 and 4.01 ± 0.48, respectively. The mean age and hemodialysis duration were 51.70 ± 9.40 and 7.57 ± 7.21 years, respectively. The common primary cause of end-stage renal disease was glomerulonephritis (n = 39, 39%). Self-care behavior varied with education, frequency of self-care behavior education, and social support and was positively correlated with treatment adherence and social support. Treatment adherence was positively correlated with social support. Treatment adherence, social support, and health status were influenced self-care behavior (54.5%. Self-care behavior and frequency of self-care behavior education influenced treatment adherence (61.3%). Treatment adherence partially mediated the relationship between social support and self-care behavior. Intervention strategies that increase both social support and treatment adherence can promote self-care behavior.

The secondary traumatic stress (STS) of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients is expected to be high, and it can adversely affect patient care. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of STS of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients, and we identified various factors that influence STS. This study followed a descriptive design. The data of 136 nurses who had provided direct care to COVID-19 patients from 5 September to 26 September 2020 were collected online. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing STS. Participants experienced moderate levels of STS. The regression model of Model 1 was statistically significant (F = 6.21, p < 0.001), and the significant factors influencing STS were the duration of care for patients with COVID-19 for more than 30 days (β = 0.28, p < 0.001) and working in an undesignated COVID-19 hospital (β = 0.21, p = 0.038). In Model 2, the factor influencing STS was the support of a friend in the category of social support (β = −0.21, p = 0.039). The nurses caring for COVID-19 patients are experiencing a persistent and moderate level of STS. This study can be used as basic data to treat and prevent STS.

AbstractObjective: to describe self-care behavior and its associated factors in a sample of heart failure Brazilian patients.Method: descriptive cross-sectional study with non-probabilistic sample of 116 ambulatory patients undergoing heart failure treatment. Self-care was evaluated using the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index, (scores ≥70 points=appropriate self-care). Association tests were applied, considering a descriptive level of 0.05.Results: the mean age of participants was 57.7 (SD =11.3) years; 54.3% were male; the mean schooling was 5.5 (SD = 4.0) years; and 74.1% had functional class II-III. The mean scores on the subscales of the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index indicated inappropriate self-care (self-care maintenance: 53.2 (SD =14.3), selfcare management: 50.0 (SD = 20.3) and self-care confidence: 52.6 (SD=22.7)) and it was found low frequencies of participants with appropriate self-care (self-care maintenance, 6.9%), self-care management (14.7%) and self-care confidence (19%). Higher scores of the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index were associated with: reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (p=0.001), longer time of experience with the disease (p=0.05) and joint monitoring by physician and nurse (p=0.007).Conclusion: investments are needed to improve the self-care behavior and the nursing can play a relevant role in this improvement.

OverviewThe mental health problems of adolescents with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are important. It is of great significance to explore which factors can affect the self-evaluation and understanding of adolescents with HIV.ObjectiveWe found that adolescents with HIV have a lower level of self-concept than healthy adolescents. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing self-concept among adolescents with HIV in China.SettingA questionnaire was distributed among a total of 290 adolescents in Henan Province, China. One hundred and forty questionnaires were distributed in the case group (adolescents with HIV) and the control group (healthy adolescents) was issued 150 questionnaires.The Piers-Harris Children’s Self-concept Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire were adapted for a Chinese population. Differences between the groups were tested for significance using Student’s t-test, and analysis of variance was used to test continuous variables. The relationship between environmental personality factors and adolescent self-concept was examined by Pearson correlation analysis. Hierarchical linear regression analysis was used to model the effects of environmental personality factors on self-concept.ResultsThe self-concept total score among adolescents with HIV was significantly lower than healthy adolescents (p<0.05). Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that age (β=−0.19, t=−2.16, p=0.03), perceived stress (β=−0.19, t=−2.22, p=0.03), perceived social support (β=0.26, t=3.25, p=0.00), positive coping style (β=0.50, t=5.75, p=0.00) and negative coping style (β=−0.45, t=−5.33, p=0.00) were significantly associated with self-concept total scores.ConclusionsThe self-concept of adolescents with HIV is related to perceived stress, perceived social support and coping style. These findings underline the significance of self-concept among adolescents infected with HIV.

Introduction: Diabetes belongs to the chronic disease group with an average high prevalence rate of 463 million worldwide. This research aims to investigate factors associated with self-care behavior among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: The sample included 441 patients diagnosed with diabetes admitted to the Tambon Health Promoting Hospital in Nakhon Nayok Province. The sample size used in this study was calculated according to the sampling group of Yamane with a 95% confidence level. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis at the statistical significance level of 0.05. Results: The results showed that the average value of knowledge was 9.17 (SD=2.38), and the average values of attitude and social support behavior towards diabetes were 2.72 (SD=0.64) and 1.83 (SD=0.27), respectively. The results indicated that knowledge, attitude, and social support towards diabetes showed an average of a medium level. Moreover, the average value of self-care behavior towards diabetes was 30.52 (SD= 7.19). The results indicated that the knowledge about diabetes, attitude towards diabetes, and social support towards diabetes positively affected self-care behavior towards diabetes with the statistical significance of 0.05. Conclusion: Health promotion programs for patients with diabetes should be organized to promote knowledge and awareness on proper health behavior. In order to take care of themselves, diabetic patients must first get awareness regarding diabetes and then build skills for self-care. The results obtained in the study can help diabetic patients stay healthier, reduce the manifestation of both acute and chronic complications, and improve the quality of life of the elderly with diabetes.

Abstract BackgroundCoronavirus with sudden and widespread outbreak has obviously imposed devastating consequences in various aspects of human life. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive value of Pender's health promotion model (HPM) structures in self-care preventive behavior against COVID-19 among the general population of Ardabil, Iran. MethodsThe present retrospective descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 200 citizens of Ardabil aged 18 and over in 2020, who were selected by convenience sampling through social media. Data collection tools included demographic profile, perceived self-efficacy scale, perceived emotions questionnaire, perceived social support questionnaire, perceived benefits and barriers questionnaire, researcher-made COVID-19 self-care questionnaire and commitment to action questionnaire based on Pender's HPM structures in an online manner. Data were analyzed by Amos 22 software and using structural equation modeling (SEM). ResultsAccording to the results, direct path analysis to COVID-19 self-care behavior indicated that the variables of perceived self-efficacy, interpersonal effects, positive emotion and perceived benefits are able to significantly predict self-care behaviors. Moreover, the bootstrapping test results in the indirect path analysis demonstrated that the variables of perceived self-efficacy, perceived social support, and perceived barriers and benefits through the mediator variable of commitment to action are able to significantly predict COID-19 self-care behavior.ConclusionsBased on the findings of the present study, it can be claimed that the proposed model of COVID-19 self-care behavior has an acceptable fitness in the general population. It seems that this model can be employed in developing educational programs and intervention techniques to modify people's attitudes and behaviors.

Background: One of the greatest challenges that will face by the health system globally in the 21stcentury will be the increasing burden of chronic kidney diseases. Self-care management becomes an inevitable and significant task for them. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of VAT with reinforcement handbook on knowledge patient and their self-care behavior among hemodialysis. Methods: An evaluative approach with one group pretest post -test design was adopted for the study. The study was conducted in SVBCH, Silvassa among 70 hemodialysis patients using convenience sampling method. Results: The results of the study revealed that the posttest mean knowledge scores of patient(18.6), and the self-care behavior of patients(111.5) found higher that the pretest mean(13.1, and 103.6) scores and the obtained ‘t’ values (patient- 11.02, patient’s self-care behavior-7.99, were greater than the table value 1.995 and it found to be highly significant at p<0.05. Hence the intervention was effective in improving knowledge and self-care behavior. The knowledge scores and the self-care behavior scores of hemodialysis patients found positively correlated (0.3). There was a significant association between hemodialysis patient pretest knowledge & educational status. There was no significant association between patient pretest self-care behavior & selected demographic variables. Conclusion: The study results confirmed that the knowledge regarding self-care management of hemodialysis patient significantly increased among patients after administration of video assisted teaching with reinforcement handbook. Self-care behavior also increased among patients along with the knowledge of patients.
