In our complex and highly connected world, educating for life—that is, educating students with knowledge, skills, and competences infused with practical wisdom (PW) and ethical and moral values—is essential. The paper seeks to answer the question: how could university education facilitate the progress to a wiser and better world? The methodology involves case study research (CSR) based on both secondary and primary data. The missions, visions, and values of fourteen public Finnish universities are analyzed for PW. The findings demonstrate that universities, by becoming more open, unbounded, and enacting organizations, and by enhancing collaboration with businesses, could foster the cultivation of PW in higher education (HE). The novelty of this paper is the creative communication of the case study, where kairos, logos, pathos, and ethos are used to explore a new reality for HE. The article contributes to the contemporary discourses in the literature on the future of HE. Educators in HE need to transform from knowledge workers to wise leaders, wisdom workers, creators, empathizers, pattern recognizers, and meaning makers. The context of the case study research makes it difficult to generalize. Therefore, international, comparative research is used to complement the findings. The eight-stage change process applied to universities and HE could help in solving the urgent problems of society and facilitating progress to a wiser and better world.

This article presents case study research performed in a small-scale and centrally located industrial site by the riverfront in Gothenburg, Ringön. It has been highlighted in municipal visions to develop according to its very own circumstances, meaning small-scale and zoned for industrial use. Being closely located to the historic core of the city and surrounded by large construction sites, Ringön has received a lot of attention lately in local newspapers, research, university education and social media. The area is repeatedly pictured as redundant, with some rough potential to become something of a hipster mekka. However, this coverage mostly recognises newcomers from the creative industries and art, while neglecting existing repair-shops and small-scale manufacturing industries. To picture an area as redundant and in need of improvements, exemplifies a feature of gentrification, where extant qualities are seldom appreciated, and where outsiders define the needs to revitalize. The purpose is here to understand and shed light on a diversity of perspectives and interests among Ringön stakeholders, i.e. the insiders, who together affect the development in question. In order to grasp the complexity of the process, I develop a many-faceted narrative in line with Bent Flyvbjerg’s approach to case study research. Meaning-making histories and activities that have come forward in field studies are sorted into eras that are considered lost, still alive, almost lost or recently found. This play of thought is inspired by current discourses on worlds coming to an end, as interpreted by Déborah Danowski and Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. In addition, the concept of “urban glue” from Nigel Thrift is introduced to illustrate how Ringön embodies an era that is certainly still alive.

The aim of this study was to know the psychological dynamics of child labour in Batik sector in Pekalongan. This case study research applied interview, observation and documentation for collecting data. The findings of this research show that school breakout child labour generally motivated to work only to earn, whereas the school child labour, more motivated by pity feeling of their parents. The children labour affective condition has different ways in order to face the problems of school continuity. Some felt disappointed on failure to continue their school, some felt so-so, and some others felt happy because of school duties-free. Generally, child labour was excited when they help their parents or when they work in the owner of the interprise. They also felt proud because they could help out their parents’ burdens. The school breakout child labour tend to have no any desires for coming back to their school because of feeling happy in working. It differs with the school children, which still have an expectation to continue to the higher education and have aspiration.

In the presented case study we deepen the results of an international comparative research concerning the section of the survey carried out in Italy, going into detail about the situation related to the use of ICT in prison in our country during the Covid-19 pandemic. By proposing large excerpts of the interviews collected from four privileged witnesses (a prison manager, a school principal and two teachers), the article, through the examination of the practices told and the reflections collected, intends to probe the existing imaginaries on the use of ICT in the prison context, comparing points of view of different roles and examining the diachronic perspectives: pre/post pandemic and the prospects of future development.   Le TIC in carcere durante la pandemia da Covid-19: uno studio di caso.   Nello studio di caso presentato approfondiamo i risultati di una ricerca comparativa internazionale che riguardano la sezione dell’indagine svolta in Italia, scendendo nel dettaglio della situazione relativa agli utilizzi delle TIC in carcere nel nostro Paese durante la pandemia da Covid-19. Proponendo ampi stralci delle interviste raccolte da quattro testimoni privilegiati (un dirigente carcerario, un dirigente scolastico e due docenti), l’articolo, attraverso l’esame delle pratiche raccontate e delle riflessioni raccolte, intende sondare gli immaginari esistenti sull’utilizzo delle TIC in contesto penitenziario, confrontando punti di vista di ruoli differenti ed esaminandone lo svolgimento diacronico pre/post pandemia e le prospettive di sviluppo futuro.

The article investigates whether international comparative higher education research has grown considerably during the past two decades. It reports the outcomes of a recent bibliometric study which found three key characteristics of international comparative higher education research: a relatively steady state, a larger share of international collaborative articles in international comparative research compared to non-comparative research, and a preference for small-scale country clusters for comparison.
