Background: According to the National Medical Council (NMC) recommendation, the foundation course was carried out in our institution for I MBBS 2019 and 2020 students. The current study was done to solicit the viewpoints of the students and faculty members about the connection of the topics included in the foundation course. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out to seek the perspectives of students who took the foundation course and the faculties involving in teaching the topics allotted for the 2019 and 2020 MBBS students. Google Forms was used to collect the data, which was analyzed by Excel. Results: The general experience of the students and faculty was uniformly positive for 100% for both students and faculty in the 2019 group, and 94.1% and 97.8% for students and faculty, respectively, in the 2020 group. In the 2019 group, the skills module was recognized as the most appropriate module in the foundation course with (77.8%), followed by sports and extracurricular activities module (both at 64.6%). In the 2020 group, the professional development and ethics module was recognized as most appropriate by 89.3% of students, followed by the orientation module (83.3%) and language & computer skills module (80.9%) Conclusions: This Foundation Course for MBBS students provided before the start of the medical curriculum is a novel and useful step. Feedback from various colleges across India can help make this course still more useful.

Background: The National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019 has come into force from August 2019 with the aim of addressing the shortcomings in the process of regulating medical colleges in the country and also in the wake of allegations of corruption against the 63-year-old Medical Council of India. However, it has been criticized for various reasons viz., it is over-centralized, it would lead to increased profiteering, corruption etc. In this context the present study was undertaken to find out the perceptions and opinion of the medical students about the NMC act.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study done at a Medical College, Wayanad District, between August-January 2019. All the undergraduate medical students of the college were the study subjects. Data was collected using a predesigned and pretested self-administered questionnaire. The subjects were asked to give response to questions pertaining to NMC on a Likert scale of 1 to 5. Completed responses were obtained from a total 655 students.Results: The subjects strongly agreed with the 6 limitations of the NMC (median score 1) and agreed with 9 (median score 2) out of the total 15 limitations. The number of subjects agreeing (agree and strongly agree) was highest [574 (88.3%)] for “NMC is over-centralized”.Conclusions: The subjects agreed (strongly agree+agree) to all the limitations of the NMC. There was no disagreement to any of the limitations.

OBJECTIVES: To study the attitude of health colleges students about extracurricular activities.METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted among 213 students, only 117 students responded. An online survey was sent to all students in the second-year health colleges at the Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (formally University of Dammam) in Saudi Arabia in 2015 (February-April). The survey consisted of two parts; Part I: Students participation in different activities, and Part II: consisted of questions about the barriers of participating in the extracurricular activities.RESULTS: The results showed that the participation percentage in extracurricular activities was low (9.6%). Students at the present study reported that the most common obstacle was the conflict with the classes. Students stated other factors such as; there were no incentive, not encouraged by faculty members to participate in extracurricular activities, no guidance for the activities and its objectives and that most of the activities are not attractive.CONCLUSION: Engagement in extracurricular activities among health colleges student at the Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University was low. Obstacles should be addressed by the deanships of student affairs in order to enhance the involvement in extracurricular activity.

Aim: To assess the necessity to review the Oral pathology curriculum, based on the expert opinion of faculty members of oral pathology of Karachi. Methods: In this cross-sectional study the data was collected by non-probability sampling technique from different colleges of Karachi. Distribution of the online questionnaire regarding curriculum of oral pathology was made through Google online forms. Questionnaire was only filled by oral pathology specialists/ experts/faculty of dental colleges of different cities after taking their verbal consent. Inclusion criteria was Oral pathology faculty members from all Pakistan Medical Council affiliated colleges having undergraduate BDS program. Results: Males were 22(66.7%). Among the respondents, 40.62% were Assistant Professor, followed by Demonstrator 31.25% and Associate professor 28.12%. Among participants, approximately 13(39.4%) agreed that the PMC syllabus is non-specific. Topic selection is difficult for 12(36.4%) participants. About 21(63.6%) thought that an extensive Oral Pathology syllabus is needed. Reviews for the inclusion of general pathology topics scored 14(42.4%) disagreement. About 11(33.3%) reported having missing Oral Pathology topics in the curriculum. Majority 18(54.5%) agreed to revise the curriculum. Conclusion: It has been concluded that faculty members of oral pathology recommend a high necessity to review the Oral pathology curriculum in Pakistan. By gathering modifications within the existing program of curriculum, it can be made more intriguing and systematized for students. Keywords: Oral pathology, curriculum, cross-sectional, study

Abstract Introduction: Research experience gained by medical students during their under graduate tenure plays a significant role in their future endeavours in the field of medical research. The present study was a cross-sectional study conducted to know the attitudes and perceptions towards research among final year medical students in a private medical college. Methods: A total of 220 students participated in the study. Results: The majority of the students agreed that research is important in the medical field (88.6%, 195/220). The majority also believed that research methodology to be part of medical curriculum (72.7%, 160/220). 31.8% (70/220) felt that Research methodology will be helpful to enter competitive exams (USMLE, PLAB). The barriers for conducting research as believed by students were: Lack of interest (32.7%, 72/220), Lack of time (31.4%, 135/220), Inadequate knowledge about research methodology (51.4%, 113/230), Lack of guidance by faculties (27.7%, 61/220), Lack of research curriculum (34.1%, 75/230) Inadequate facilities for research (35.5%, 78/220), Inadequate financial support (30.9%, 68/220) and others 2.9% (6/220). Of the participating students, 23.2% (51/220) participated in research during medical school, while 76.8% (179/220) did not. Conclusion: Medical colleges should emphasize more on research among the undergraduate students. There is a need to reform the medical curriculum with more weightage towards research methodology.

A health professional requires resilience to be able to handle the depression, anxiety and stress, which may occur when they are in the field. Resilience is theability to tackle and overcome difficulties, with personal transformation and growth. Studies in undergraduate medical students have shown a difference in the stress scores of males and females, showing the possibility of gender difference in coping strategies and resilience. Therefore, the objective of the study was to assess the resilience scores of undergraduate medical students and to find out the existence of gender differences in their resilience scores. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the first and second-year MBBS students of 18-25 years of age after obtaining informed consent and Institutional ethical clearance. All willing male and female students fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria formed the study participants. A standard resilience questionnaire was used to assess the resilience scores of the students and the male and female participants scores were noted separately. A total of of282 first and second-year undergraduate medical students participated in the study. A significantly higher percentage of female students had a high resilience score in comparison to male participants. Our study highlights the fact that females have a higher resilience compared to males. But still, the majority of male and female students are having moderate resilience. Thus, the future focus should be on the promotion of resilience-building measures to be taught to the students early in their medical curriculum to successfully tackle the stressful situations.

Abstract Objective The primary objective of this proof-of-concept cross-sectional study was to identify a framework for appraising the learning-approaches of undergraduate medical students in a competency based medical curriculum and correlating the results with teaching-approaches, as well as academic performance. The study was pursued at MBRU, which is a medical school in the Middle East with an undergraduate entry medical program. Results Our framework was blueprinted using the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) questionnaire, to which we made some modifications such that the overall cogency of the questionnaire wasn’t affected. Initial results with modified ASSIST at MBRU showed that most of our students adopted Deep or Strategic-learning approaches. This observation is in line with other studies in the literature, which shows that modified ASSIST is a suitable tool for mapping generic learning approaches with teaching approaches. Further, based on the insights from our initial results following the implementation of modified ASSIST, we have considered specific pedagogical strategies, in practice at MBRU, which cater to the generic learning approaches of majority of our undergraduate medical students. These pedagogical approaches, A. Feynman’s Technique; and B. Blended learning strategies, if implemented suitably in a curriculum will transform “Surface-learners” to “Deep/Strategic-learners”.

This study examines the occupational stress levels of elementary school teachers in the Municipal Education System of a city in the Vale dos Sinos (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), and verifies its occurrence by gender, as well as by age and teaching work time. This quantitative, cross-sectional study evaluates the presence of stress on 50 adults through the LIPP - ISSL Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults (Lipp, 2000). The results show that the women in the study experienced more physical symptoms of stress than the evaluated men did. It also indicates that stress maybe a characteristic of the teaching activity, since it affects both younger and older faculty members, as well as professors at the beginning, middle and end of their careers.
