AbstractNew fluorinated inorganic-organic hybrid polymers (ORMOCER*s) for integrated optics were synthesized via hydrolysis and condensation (sol-gel processing) of functionalized pentafluorophenylalkoxysi lanes followed by organic crosslinking reactions. Process parameters (catalyst, temperature and ratio of educts) were optimized to achieve low transmission losses at the most important wavelengths for telecommunication in the NIR range: 1310 nm and 1550 nm.The result is a photopatternable transparent ORMOCER (negative resist behavior) with excellent low losses: 0.20 dB/cm at 1310 nm and 0.30 dB/cm at 1550 nm.Besides their high transparency the fluorinated ORMOCERs show a variety of other properties enabling their use as waveguide materials within the production of optoelectronic devices and related thin film technology: good wetting and adhesion on various substrates (e.g. glass, silicon and several polymers), low processing temperatures (postbake below 160 °C), high thermal stability (decomposition > 250°C) and a tunable refractive index.

ABSTRACTInorganic-organic hybrid polymers were prepared by radical polymerization of methacrylic acid or methyl methacrylate with the (meth) acrylate-substituted oxozirconium and oxotitanium clusters Zr6(OH)4O4(OMc)12(OMc = methacrylate), Zr4O2(OMc)12, Ti6O4(OEt)8(OMc)8 and Ti4O2(OPri)6(OAcr)6(OAcr = acrylate). A few mol% of cluster is sufficient for an efficient cross-linking of the polymer chains. Small-angle X-ray scattering data indicate that the cluster size is retained in the polymers and that the microstructure of the cluster cross-linked samples can be described by a dispersion of identical spherical or disk-shaped clusters in the polymer. The obtained hybrid polymers exhibit a higher thermal stability because depolymerization reactions are inhibited. Contrary to undoped poly (methyl methacrylate), the cluster cross-linked polymers are insoluble but swell in organic solvents. The solvent uptake upon swelling decreases with an increasing amount of polymerized cluster.

AbstractFor applications in polymer electronics, suitable passivation coatings are searched for. Inorganic-organic hybrid polymers (ORMOCER®.s) have proven to be tunable in a wide range with respect to their physical properties. Their synthesis can be controlled such that the resulting materials show very low water vapor transition rates (WVTR) which is one of the most important key properties for passivation applications. Besides, ORMOCER®.s can be patterned by UV lithography due to their organic functional groups thus yielding the possibility of selectively passivate electronic circuits. Typical WVTR values which have been achieved so far for individual thin-film layers range between approximately 1 and 5 g/m2d (calculated for 100 μm layer thickness). The passivation properties will be discussed with respect to variations of the inorganic content and to the network formed upon processing.

The reaction of the Pn ligand complex [Cp*Fe(η5-P5)] (1: Cp* = η5-C5Me5) with CuCl in the presence of 4,4′-bipyridine or 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene leads to the formation of three unprecedented neutral 2D organometallic–organic hybrid networks.
