Occurrence and features of parametric roll (PR) on a weather-vaning floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) platform with a turret single-point mooring-line system are examined. The main focus is on the relevance of motions coupling and nonlinear effects on this phenomenon and on more general unstable conditions as well as on the occurrence and severity of water on deck. This work was motivated by recent experiments on an FPSO model without mooring systems highlighting the occurrence of parametric resonance owing to roll–yaw coupling. A three-dimensional numerical hybrid potential-flow seakeeping solver was able to capture this behaviour. The same method, extended to include the mooring lines, is adopted here to investigate the platform behaviour for different incident wavelengths, steepnesses, headings, locations of the turret and pretensions. From the results, sway and yaw tend to destabilize the system, also bringing chaotic features. The sway–roll–yaw coupling widens the existence region of PR resonance and increases PR severity; it also results in a larger amount of shipped water, especially at smaller wavelength-to-ship length ratio and larger steepness. The chaotic features are excited when a sufficiently large yaw amplitude is reached. Consistently, a simplified stability analysis showed the relevance of nonlinear-restoring coefficients, first those connected with the sway–yaw coupling then those associated with the roll–yaw coupling, both destabilizing. From the stability analysis, the system is unstable for all longitudinal locations of the turret and pre-tensions examined, but the instability weakens as the turret is moved forward, and the pre-tension is increased. The use of a suitable dynamic-positioning system can control the horizontal motions, avoiding the instability.

Mooring line damping plays an important role to the body motion of moored floating platforms. Meanwhile, it can also make contributions to optimize the mooring line system. Accurate assessment of mooring line damping is thus an essential issue for offshore structure design. However, it is difficult to determine the mooring line damping based on theoretical methods. This study considers the parameters which have impact on mooring-induced damping. In the paper, applying Morison formula to calculate the drag and initial force on the mooring line, its dynamic response is computed in the time domain. The energy dissipation of the mooring line due to the viscosity was used to calculate mooring-induced damping. A mooring line is performed with low-frequency oscillation only, the low-frequency oscillation superimposed with regular and irregular wave-frequency motions. In addition, the influences of current velocity, mooring line pretension and different water depths are taken into account.

The effect of multi-component multi-support excitations on the response of power transmission tower-line system is analyzed in this paper, using three-dimensional finite element time-stepping analysis of a transmission tower-line system based on an actual project. Multi-component multi-support earthquake input waves are generated based on the Code for Design of Seismic of Electrical Installations. Geometric non-linearity was considered in the analysis. An extensive parametric study was conducted to investigate the behavior of the transmission tower-line system under multi-component multi-support seismic excitations. The parameters include single-component multi-support ground motions, multi-component multi-support ground motions, the correlations among the three-component of multi-component multi-support ground motions, the spatial correlation of multi-component multi-support ground motions, the incident angle of multi-component multi-support seismic waves, the ratio of the peak values of the three-component of multi-component multi-support ground motions, and site condition with apparent wave velocity of multi-component multi-support ground motions.

Abstract The intention of this work is to perform a probabilistic fatigue assessment of a mooring line due to loads associated with the station-keeping of a ship in ice. In March 2017, the company Equinor (Statoil) conducted full-scale tests by means of station-keeping trials (SKT) in drifting ice in the Bay of Bothnia. The vessel Magne Viking was employed in order to represent a supply vessel equipped with a mooring line system, and the realtime loading during the full-scale measurement was recorded. The second vessel Tor Viking was serving as an ice breaker in order to maintain the physical ice management activities with different ice-breaking schemes, i.e. square updrift pattern, round circle pattern, circular updrift pattern and linear updrift pattern. The fatigue degradation corresponding to these different patterns were investigated. The peaks and valleys of the mooring tension are determined using the min peak prominence method. For the purpose of probabilistic fatigue assessment, the Rainflow-counting algorithm is applied to estimate the mooring stress range. Fatigue assessment based both on Rainflow counting and fitted probabilistic models were performed. For the latter, the stress range distributions from the observed data of mooring loads are fitted to various probability models in order to estimate the fatigue damage. It is found that the stress ranges represented by application of the Weibull distribution for the probabilistic fatigue approach provides results of the fatigue damage most similar to the Rainflow counting approach. Among the different scenarios of Ice management schemes, the circular updrift pattern provides the lowest magnitude of the fatigue degradation.

This paper presents an adaptive fixed-time guidance law for the three-dimensional interception guidance problem with impact angle constraints and control input saturation against a maneuvering target. First, a coupled guidance model formulated by the relative motion equation is established. On this basis, a fixed-time disturbance observer is employed to estimate the lumped disturbances. With the help of this estimation technique, the adaptive fixed-time sliding mode guidance law is designed to accomplish accurate interception. The stability of the closed-loop guidance system is proven by the Lyapunov method. Simulation results of different scenarios are executed to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed guidance law.

ABSTRACT Bacillus thuringiensis three-domain Cry toxins kill insects by forming pores in the apical membrane of larval midgut cells. Oligomerization of the toxin is an important step for pore formation. Domain I helix α-3 participates in toxin oligomerization. Here we identify an intramolecular salt bridge within helix α-3 of Cry4Ba (D111-K115) that is conserved in many members of the family of three-domain Cry toxins. Single point mutations such as D111K or K115D resulted in proteins severely affected in toxicity. These mutants were also altered in oligomerization, and the mutant K115D was more sensitive to protease digestion. The double point mutant with reversed charges, D111K-K115D, recovered both oligomerization and toxicity, suggesting that this salt bridge is highly important for conservation of the structure of helix α-3 and necessary to promote the correct oligomerization of the toxin. IMPORTANCE Domain I has been shown to be involved in oligomerization through helix α-3 in different Cry toxins, and mutations affecting oligomerization also elicit changes in toxicity. The three-dimensional structure of the Cry4Ba toxin reveals an intramolecular salt bridge in helix α-3 of domain I. Mutations that disrupt this salt bridge resulted in changes in Cry4Ba oligomerization and toxicity, while a double point reciprocal mutation that restored the salt bridge resulted in recovery of toxin oligomerization and toxicity. These data highlight the role of oligomer formation as a key step in Cry4Ba toxicity.

This work presents a new approach for resolving the unique invariant slip direction at Stick-Slip Transition during impact. The solution method presented in this work is applicable to both single-point and multi-point impact problems. The proposed method utilizes rigid body constraints to resolve the impact forces at all collision points in terms of a single independent impact forces parameter. This work also uses an energetic coefficient of restitution to terminate impact events, thereby yielding energetically consistent post-impact behavior.
