Using the latest stellar evolution models, theoretical stellar spectra, and a compilation of observed emission line strengths from Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, we have constructed evolutionary synthesis models for young starbursts (Schaerer & Vacca 1997; see also Schaerer 1996). We provide detailed predictions of UV and optical emission line strengths for both the WR stellar lines and the major nebular hydrogen and helium emission lines, as a function of several input parameters related to the starburst episode.

Until recently there have been very few measurements of the ionizing continuum in quasars. With the combination of Einstein X-ray slopes and IUE spectra for a sample of quasars, this continuum can now be better constrained. Here we take a preliminary look for relations between the shape of this continuum and the emission lines produced over the observed range of continuum properties.

As a step towards the understanding of the phenomena occurring in galactic nuclei, we find that the ratio between the radio continuum emission of the nuclei of spiral galaxies and their optical luminosity is related to optical signs of nuclear activity, such as the emission line strengths of the H∝ and [NII] λ6584 lines.
