Energy was not stated as one of the millennium development goals (MDGs) but played an indirect role in helping meet the MDGs especially in the areas of housing, health, education, and poverty reduction in Africa. In contrast, the United Nations’ 2030 agenda includes 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), one of which is devoted to energy. SDG7 seeks to ensure “access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all,” thereby creating a vital role for the energy sector to join in the task of achieving SDGs. Renewable energy including solar energy will play a significant role in improving energy security in Africa and diversifying the energy mix by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This chapter examines the advantages of solar technologies in the context of social, economic, and environment benefits using case studies from Kenya and South Africa. This chapter also examines some of the key challenges that are associated with the application of solar energy technologies in these countries. Finally, the chapter discusses how solar energy technologies can help meet SDGs and summarizes policy and programs targeting the promotion of solar energy technologies for the implementation of SDGs.

The article examines the role of the eco -financial sector in the implementation of sustainable development goals through the creation of a new ecological system of global financial resources -a system of responsible and green financing. Favorable economic conditions and significant socio-economic benefits are at the heart of banks’ transition to responsible and green finance. Provided that these principles are implemented on an ongoing basis, in the near future, one can expect an increase in investments in environmental and social projects, and, as a result, an improvement in the environmental situation and an increase in the standard of living of the population different countries of the world. In this paper, the authors analyzed the main directions of development of a new ecological system of global financial resources - a system of responsible and green financing in Russia and abroad and the role of the eco - financial sector in the implementation of the UN sustainable development goals in terms of combating climate change, industrialization, innovation and infrastructure, affordable and clean energy, clean water and sanitation. The analysis showed that foreign and domestic banks and other financial institutions are actively involved in organizing and conducting the issuance of “green” bonds.

Ensuring the required level of energy security is one of the most important objectives not only for any particular state, but worldwide also. This article is devoted to the development of a set of indicators for evaluating the implementation of the Russian Federation (RF) energy security strategy in the context of implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In the course of the study the balanced scorecard was used as a basic methodology for developing a set of indicators to ensure energy security. This methodology has been adapted in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Russian Federation energy security strategy and the concept of sustainable development. Based on the analysis of indicators in terms of their relation to sustainable development goals, approaches of other countries and the availability of statistical data, a set of indicators and a strategic map for the implementation of the Russian Federation energy security strategy in the context of achieving the sustainable development goals were developed. The proposed strategic map and set of indicators will allow to monitor the implementation of the strategy, as well as afford the decision-making in the context of achieving the sustainable development goals.

Sustainable development was chosen by the United Nations as the key concept of the future in the 21st century, which led to the emergence of other economic concepts, such as green and blue economy, seen as contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs). In Russia, despite the ongoing processes of green transformation in some economic sectors and certain improvements in the green legislation and green finance, not all businesses and regions are ready to embrace sustainable development. This paper discusses two interconnected aspects of regional economic systems — their economic efficiency and environmental impact. The analysis focuses on the regions of the Ural Federal District and explores these regions’ transition to sustainable development by looking at their eco-intensity. Methodologically, the study relies on the methods of analysis and synthesis, statistical, comparative and causal analysis. Conceptually, we use the theoretical framework of sustainable development as a point of departure for our discussion. The results have shown, on the one hand, a decrease in the industrial pressure on the natural environment, related primarily to the enhanced resource efficiency of certain industries. On the other hand, less effort is now invested into minimising the negative impact on the environment in Ural regions. We have also identified those areas of sustainable development that hold most promise in the Russian context. Our findings can serve as a basis for the strategies of regional sustainable development and may be used for further research on socio-environmental and economic sustainability.

Abstract To date, there is a need to improve the energy efficiency of Russian industry, which is due to the main aspects of the state of domestic energy. World experience demonstrates that it is. Among such tools, automated control systems can be distinguished, which allow for accurate and fast monitoring of energy consumption, as a result of which the reliability of accounting becomes higher, energy costs are optimized. Accounting for energy resources is a strategically important task, on which the economy of any country directly depends. Currently, energy occupies a central place in the efforts of the international community to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which is related to ensuring international energy security. Currently, energy occupies a central place in the efforts of the international community to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which is related to ensuring international energy security. The strategic guidelines for improving energy efficiency are the directions of development of digitalization mechanisms and optimization of the functioning of environmental policy in the energy sector. Digitalization and automation of production processes is one of the most effective tools for changing the current situation.
