The Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014 had an immense human, social and cultural impact, and inspired many African and international music celebrities to produce songs to raise public health awareness, and to raise funds to support international emergency relief efforts. In this essay, I examine some of the songs produced during the Ebola outbreak to evaluate the role of music and celebrity culture in health education and promotion during acute public health crises. I also report on my experience as the co-creator of the song Africa Stop Ebola and the advocacy campaign that accompanied the song. Through this analysis I discuss the cultural and social impact of music production and dissemination in West Africa and the potential of music-based health promotion campaigns to improve public health education.
