After the fall of South Vietnam to North Vietnamese forces in 1975, Vietnam has remained virtually isolated from the rest of the world. With the global political changes of the past 10 years. the Hanoi Government succeeded in reducing Vietnam's international isolation in part by attempting to open the country's door to foreign visitors. The country stretches along the eastern coast of the Indo-Chinese peninsula and is slightly larger than Italy. It is ‘S-shaped’, broad in the north and south and very narrow in the centre (Fig. 1). The country's main cultivated areas are the Red River delta in the north and the Mekong delta containing Ho Chi Min city (Saigon) in the south.

Kim Son coastal plain is a part of the Red River Delta located between Day and Can rivers. Over the past 55 years, Kim Son coastal plain has been the region with the highest accretion rate in the Red River Delta. This study aims to clarify the sediment characteristics of Kim Son coastal plain. It has the structure of a typical tidal flat and a relatively straightforward tide-influenced sedimentary structure evidenced by the field observation, sampling 70 hand-drilled boreholes, borehole logging and analyzing 177 samples of grain size. There are three tidal sedimentary zones to be identified, including sand flat, mixed flat, and mudflat. The history of topographic changes is also presented over six periods from 1965 to 2020 based on analyzing and interpreting multi-time satellite images. The total accretion area of Kim Son coastal plain over 55 years was 4,081.2 ha.

Climate change (CC) and its impacts on the socio-economy and the development of communities has become an issue causing very special concern. The rise in global temperatures, in sea levels, extreme weather phenomena, and salinization have occurred more and more and have directly influenced the livelihoods of rural households in the Red River Delta – one of the two regions projected to suffer strongly from climate change in Vietnam. For farming households in this region, the major and traditional livelihoods are based on main production materials as agricultural land, or aquacultural water surface Changes in the land use of rural households in the Red River Delta during recent times was influenced strongly by the Renovation policy in agriculture as well as the process of industrialization and modernization in the country. Climate change over the past 5 years (2005-2011) has started influencing household land use with the concrete manifestations being the reduction of the area cultivated and the changing of the purpose of land use.
