Summary: Deterioration in performance associated with decreased ability to sustain attention may be found in long and tedious task sessions. The necessity for assessing a number of psychological dimensions in a single session often demands “short” tests capable of assessing individual differences in abilities such as vigilance and maintenance of high performance levels. In the present paper two tasks were selected as candidates for playing this role, the Abbreviated Vigilance Task (AVT) by Temple, Warm, Dember, LaGrange and Matthews (1996) and the Continuous Attention Test (CAT) by Tiplady (1992) . However, when applied to a sample of 829 candidates in a job-selection process for air-traffic controllers, neither of them showed discriminative capacity. In a second study, an extended version of the CAT was applied to a similar sample of 667 subjects, but also proved incapable of properly detecting individual differences. In short, at least in a selection context such as that studied here, neither of the tasks appeared appropriate for playing the role of a “short” test for discriminating individual differences in performance deterioration in sustained attention.

During the long-term service condition, the mooring line of the deep-water floating platform may fail due to various reasons, such as overloading caused by an accidental condition or performance deterioration. Therefore, the safety performance under the transient responses process should be evaluated in advance, during the design phase. A series of time-domain numerical simulations for evaluating the performance changes of a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) with different broken modes of mooring lines was carried out. The broken conditions include the single mooring line or two mooring lines failure under ipsilateral, opposite, and adjacent sides. The resulting transient and following steady-state responses of the vessel and the mooring line tensions were analyzed, and the corresponding influence mechanism was investigated. The accidental failure of a single or two mooring lines changes the watch circle of the vessel and the tension redistribution of the remaining mooring lines. The results indicated that the failure of mooring lines mainly influences the responses of sway, surge, and yaw, and the change rule is closely related to the stiffness and symmetry of the mooring system. The simulation results could give a profound understanding of the transient-effects influence process of mooring line failure, and the suggestions are given to account for the transient effects in the design of the mooring system.

AbstractFinding the correct category of wear particles is important to understand the tribological behavior. However, manual identification is tedious and time-consuming. We here propose an automatic morphological residual convolutional neural network (M-RCNN), exploiting the residual knowledge and morphological priors between various particle types. We also employ data augmentation to prevent performance deterioration caused by the extremely imbalanced problem of class distribution. Experimental results indicate that our morphological priors are distinguishable and beneficial to largely boosting overall performance. M-RCNN demonstrates a much higher accuracy (0.940) than the deep residual network (0.845) and support vector machine (0.821). This work provides an effective solution for automatically identifying wear particles and can be a powerful tool to further analyze the failure mechanisms of artificial joints.

Experimental results obtained from cascades and one stage compressor performance tests before and after erosion were used to test a fault model to represent erosion. This model was implemented on a stage stacking program developed to demonstrate the effect of erosion in a multistage compressor. The effect of the individual stage erosion on the overall compressor performance is also demonstrated.

To achieve efficient removal of phenolic pollutants in water, the catalyst of Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 was prepared. In the presence of Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3, microwave-induced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) catalytic oxidation process was conducted for the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing PNP, a representative of phenolic pollutants. Effectiveness of the process and factors influencing PNP removal were investigated and results showed microwave-induced H2O2-Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 process could achieve 99.41% PNP removal percentage, corresponding to 77.9% TOC removal in a given condition. The process remained effective in the 2-8 pH range with high reusability of Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. The kinetics study showed microwave-induced H2O2-Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 process could be divided into microwave induction stage and catalytic oxidation stage, both of which fitted first-order kinetics, with reaction rate constants of 0.0453 min-1 and 4.7552 min-1 respectively.
