<p>Phosphate esters have a wide range of industrial applications, for example in tribology where they are used as vapour phase lubricants and antiwear additives. To rationally design phosphate esters with improved tribological performance, an atomic-level understanding of their film formation mechanisms is required. One important aspect is the thermal decomposition of phosphate esters on steel surfaces, since this initiates film formation. In this study, ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the thermal decomposition of phosphate esters with different substituents on several ferrous surfaces. On Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>(001) and α-Fe(110), chemisorption interactions between the phosphate esters and the surfaces occur even at room temperature, and the number of molecule-surface bonds increases as the temperature is increased from 300 to 1000 K. Conversely, on hydroxylated, amorphous Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>, most of the molecules are physisorbed, even at high temperature. Thermal decomposition rates were much higher on Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>(001) and particularly α-Fe(110) compared to hydroxylated, amorphous Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>. This suggests that water passivates ferrous surfaces and inhibits phosphate ester chemisorption, decomposition, and ultimately film formation. On Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>(001), thermal decomposition proceeds mainly through C-O cleavage (to form surface alkyl and aryl groups) and C-H cleavage (to form surface hydroxyls). The onset temperature for C-O cleavage on Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>(001) increases in the order: tertiary alkyl < secondary alkyl < primary linear alkyl ≈ primary branched alkyl < aryl. This order is in agreement with experimental observations for the thermal stability of antiwear additives with similar substituents. The results highlight surface and substituent effects on the thermal decomposition of phosphate esters which should be helpful for the design of new molecules with improved performance.</p>

AbstractPhosphate ester hydrolysis is essential in signal transduction, energy storage and production, information storage and DNA repair. In this investigation, hydrolysis of adenosine monophosphate disodium salt (AMPNa2) was carried out in acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions of pH ranging between 0.30-12.71 at 60°C. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically. The rate ranged between (1.20 ± 0.10) × 10-7 s-1 to (4.44 ± 0.05) × 10-6 s-1 at [NaOH] from 0.0008 M to 1.00M recorded a second-order base-catalyzed rate constant, kOH as 4.32 × 10-6 M-1 s-1. In acidic conditions, the rate ranged between (1.32 ± 0.06) × 10-7 s-1 to (1.67 ± 0.10) × 10-6 s-1 at [HCl] from 0.01 M to 1.00 M. Second-order acid-catalyzed rate constant, kH obtained was 1.62 × 10-6 M-1 s-1. Rate of reaction for neutral region, k0 was obtained from graphical method to be 10-7 s-1. Mechanisms were proposed to involve P-O bond cleavage in basic medium while competition between P-O bond and N-glycosidic cleavage was observed in acidic medium. In conclusion, this study has provided comprehensive information on the kinetic parameters and mechanism of cleavage of AMPNa2 which mimicked natural AMP cleavage and the action of enzymes that facilitate its cleavage.

Currents drawn under high fields often present practical limitations to electrorheological (ER) fluids usefulness. For heavy-duty applications where large torques have to be transmitted, the power consumption of a ER fluid can be considerable, and for such uses a current density of ~100μ A cm -2 is often taken as a practical upper limit. This investigation was conducted into designing a fluid which has little extraneous conductance and therefore would demand less current. Selected semi-conducting polymers provide effective substrates for ER fluids. Such polymers are soft insoluble powdery materials with densities similar to dispersing agents used in ER formulations. Polyaniline is a semi-conducting polymer and can be used as an effective ER substrate in its emeraldine base form. In order to provide an effective ER fluid which requires less current polyaniline was coated with an insulating polymer. The conditions for coating was established for lauryl and methyl methacrylate. Results from static yield measurements indicate that ER fluids containing coated polyaniline required less current than uncoated polyaniline i.e. 0.5μ A cm -2. The generic type of coating was also found to be important.

Abstract A rapid and specific method is described for the determination of microamounts of methyl, propyl, and butyl p-hydroxybenzoic esters (parabens) in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The method involves the direct extraction of parabens into benzene or chloroform followed by derivatization with phosphorochloridate. The diethyl phosphate ester derivatives are cleaned up on a Florisil minicolumn and finally measured by gas-liquid chromatography on 5% OV-210 on Gas-Chrom Q. A flame photometric detector or a KCl thermionic detector may be used. The concentration response was linear up to 40 ng parabens. The reproducibility and margin of error were tested with fortified samples. This method may be applied to the estimation of other phenol derivatives.
