Diffusive turbulence in a confined jet experiment

An experimental analysis of the turbulence in an axisymmetrical jet within a closed tube is presented. At some distance from the nozzle, a turbulent region develops, where the kinetic energy of the mean flow almost vanishes. In this region, the turbulence is transported by turbulent diffusion and its energy decreases with the distance from the inlet. A complete description of the flow field has been achieved using laser Doppler anemometry. Some unusual features are highlighted: the statistical moments of the velocity decay exponentially, the integral length scales remain constant, the radial profiles are self-similar and the Reynolds stress tensor is isotropic and homogeneous in the radial direction. These results highlight the roles of pressure fluctuations and any mean residual motion in the return to isotropy.

A family of exact similarity solutions for inviscid compressible ablative flows in slab symmetry with nonlinear heat conduction is proposed for studying unsteadiness and compressibility effects on the hydrodynamic stability of ablation fronts relevant to inertial confinement fusion. Dynamical multi-domain Chebyshev spectral methods are employed for computing both the similarity solution and its time-dependent linear perturbations. This approach has been exploited to analyse the linear stability properties of two self-similar ablative configurations subjected to direct laser illumination asymmetries. Linear perturbation temporal and reduced responses are analysed, evidencing a maximum instability for illumination asymmetries of zero transverse wavenumber as well as three distinct regimes of ablation-front distortion evolution, and emphasizing the importance of the mean flow unsteadiness, compressibility and stratification.

The unsteady flow field produced by a tandem cylinder system with the upstream cylinder yawed to the mean flow direction is investigated for upstream cylinder yaw angles from α = 60° to α = 90°. Multi-point fluctuating surface pressure and hotwire measurements were conducted at various spanwise positions on both the upstream and downstream cylinders. The results indicate that yawing the front cylinder to the mean flow direction causes the pressure and velocity spectra on the upstream and downstream cylinders to become more broadband than for a regular tandem cylinder system, and reduces the magnitude of the peak associated with the vortex-shedding. However, span-wise correlation and coherence measurements indicate that the vortex-shedding is still present and was being obscured by the enhanced three-dimensionality that the upstream yawed cylinder caused and was still present and correlated from front to back, at least for the larger yaw angles investigated. When the cylinder was yawed to α = 60°, the pressure fluctuations became extremely broadband and exhibited shorter spanwise correlation.

A study is made here of the application of a differential stress model (DSM) of turbulence to flows in two model reciprocating engines. For the first time this study includes compressive effects. An assessment between DSM and k-ɛ results is made comparing with laser Doppler anemometry experimental data of the mean flow and turbulence intensity levels during intake and compression strokes. A well-established two-dimensional finite-volume computer code is employed. Two discretization schemes are used, namely the HYBRID scheme and the QUICK scheme. The latter is found to be essential if differentiation is to be made between the turbulence models. During the intake stroke the DSM results are, in general, similar to the k-ɛ results in comparison to the experimental data, except for the turbulence levels, which the DSM seriously underpredicts. This is in contrast to a parallel set of calculations of steady in-flow, which showed significant gains from using the DSM, particularly at the turbulence field level. The increased number of grid lines employed in those calculations contribute to this apparent difference between steady and unsteady flows, but cycle- to-cycle variations are more likely to be the primary cause, resulting in too high levels of turbulence intensity being measured. However, during the compression stroke the DSM returns vastly superior results to the k-ɛ model at both the mean flow and turbulence intensity levels. This is because the DSM generates an anisotropic shear stress field during the early stages of compression that suppresses the main vortical structure, in line with the experimental data.

Direct numerical simulations of ten turbulent time-evolving strained wakes have been generated using a pseudo-spectral numerical method. In all the simulations, the strain was applied to the same (previously generated) initial developed self-similar wake flow field. The cases include flows in which the wake is subjected to various orientations of the applied mean strain, including both plane and axisymmetric strain configurations. In addition, for one particular strain geometry, cases with differing strain rates were considered. Although classical self-similar analysis does yield a self-similar solution for strained wakes, this solution does not describe the observed flow evolution. Instead, the wake mean velocity profiles evolve according to a different ‘equilibrium similarity solution’, with the strained wake width being determined by the straining in the inhomogeneous cross-stream direction. Wakes that are compressed in this direction eventually exhibit constant widths, whereas wakes in cases with expansive cross-stream strain ultimately spread at the same rate as the distortion caused by the applied strain. The shape of the wake mean velocity deficit profile is nearly universal. Although the effect of the strain on the mean flow is pronounced and rapid, the response of the turbulence to the strain occurs more slowly. Changes in the turbulence intensity cannot keep pace with changes in the mean wake velocity deficit, even for relatively low strain rates.

The flow in a decelerating turbulent round jet is investigated using direct numerical simulation. The simulations are initialised with a flow field from a statistically stationary turbulent jet. Upon stopping the inflow, a deceleration wave passes through the jet, behind which the velocity field evolves towards a new statistically unsteady self-similar state. Assumption of unsteady self-similar behaviour leads to analytical relations concerning the evolution of the centreline mean axial velocity and the shapes of the radial profiles of the velocity statistics. Consistency between these predictions and the simulation data supports the use of the assumption of self-similarity. The mean radial velocity is predicted to reverse in direction near to the jet centreline as the deceleration wave passes, contributing to an approximately threefold increase in the normalised mass entrainment rate. The shape of the mean axial velocity profile undergoes a relatively small change across the deceleration transient, and this observation provides direct evidence in support of previous models that have assumed that the mean axial velocity profile, and in some cases also the jet spreading angle, remain approximately constant within unsteady jets.

Three-dimensional (3D) confined wall jets have various engineering applications related to efficient energy dissipation. This paper presents experimental measurements of mean flow development for a 3D rectangular wall jet confined by a vertical baffle with a fixed distance (400 mm) from its surface to the nozzle. Experiments were performed at three different Reynolds numbers of 8333, 10,000 and 11,666 based on jet exit velocity and square root of jet exit area (named as B), with water depth of 100 mm. Detailed measurements of current jet were taken using a particle image velocimetry technique. The results indicate that the confined jet seems to behave like an undisturbed jet until 16B downstream. Beyond this position, however, the mean flow development starts to be gradually affected by the baffle confinement. The baffle increases the decay and spreading of the mean flow from 16B to 23B. The decay rate of 1.11 as well as vertical and lateral growth rates of 0.04 and 0.19, respectively, were obtained for the present study, and also fell well within the range of values which correspond to the results in the radial decay region for the unconfined case. In addition, the measurements of the velocity profiles, spreading rates and velocity decay were also found to be independent of Reynolds number. Therefore, the flow field in this region appears to have fully developed at least 4B earlier than the unconfined case. Further downstream (after 23B), the confinement becomes more pronounced. The vertical spreading of current jet shows a distinct increase, while the lateral growth was found to be decreased significantly. It can be also observed that the maximum mean velocity decreases sharply close to the baffle.

This paper describes an investigation of the mean and fluctuating flow field within an annular S-shaped duct which is representative of that used to connect the compressor spools of aircraft gas turbine engines. Data was obtained from a fully annular test facility using a 3-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) system. The measurements indicate that development of the flow within the duct is complex and significantly influenced by the combined effects of streamwise pressure gradients and flow curvature. In addition CFD predictions of the flow, using both the k-ε and Reynolds stress transport equation turbulence models, are compared with the experimental data. Whereas curvature effects are not described properly by the k-ε model, such effects are captured more accurately by the Reynolds stress model leading to a better prediction of the Reynolds shear stress distribution. This, in turn, leads to a more accurate prediction of the mean velocity profiles, as reflected by the boundary layer shape parameters, particularly in the critical regions of the duct where flow separation is most likely to occur.

The interior noise of a high-speed train due to the external flow disturbance is more than ever a major problem for product developers to consider during a design state. Since the external surface pressure field induces wall panel vibration of a high-speed train, which in turn generates the interior sound, the first step for low interior noise design is to characterize the surface pressure fluctuations due to external disturbance. In this study, the external flow field of a high-speed train cruising at a speed of 300 km/h in open-field and tunnel are numerically investigated using high-resolution compressible LES (large eddy simulation) techniques, with a focus on characterizing fluctuating surface pressure field according to surrounding conditions of the cruising train, i.e., open-field and tunnel. First, compressible LES schemes with high-resolution grids were employed to accurately predict the exterior flow and acoustic fields around a high-speed train simultaneously. Then, the predicted fluctuating pressure field on the wall panel surface of a train was decomposed into incompressible and compressible ones using the wavenumber-frequency transform, given that the incompressible pressure wave induced by the turbulent eddies within the boundary layer is transported approximately at the mean flow and the compressible pressure wave propagated at the vector sum of the sound speed and the mean flow velocity. Lastly, the power levels due to each pressure field were computed and compared between open-field and tunnel. It was found that there is no significant difference in the power levels of incompressible surface pressure fluctuations between the two cases. However, the decomposed compressible one in the tunnel case is higher by about 2~10 dB than in the open-field case. This result reveals that the increased interior sound of the high-speed train running in a tunnel is due to the compressible surface pressure field.

A model is described of two-dimensional vortex turbulent flow of homogeneous liquid in a cylindrical tank with flat bottom and radial baffles at its walls agitated with an inclined plane blade impeller rotating in a cylindrical draft-tube. The obtained field of the mean Stokes stream function expresses the streamline distribution in the system. As the boundary conditions of the used solution of stream equation serve partly the values of the mean Stokes stream function on the system boundaries (bottom, liquid level, walls of tank and draft-tube, tank axis), partly the radial profiles of axial and radial components of mean velocity on the level of draft-tube lower base obtained by the laser-doppler anemometry. It follows from the comparison with results of previously published studies that in systems with cylindrical draft-tube and axial high-speed impeller, the convective flow intensity of agitated liquid is higher and the streamline distribution in system is more uniform providing that the conical bottom with 120° vertex angle is used instead of the flat bottom.

The present paper addresses some topical issues in modelling compressible turbulent shear flows. The work is based on direct numerical simulation (DNS) of two supersonic fully developed channel flows between very cold isothermal walls. Detailed decomposition and analysis of terms appearing in the mean momentum and energy equations are presented. The simulation results are used to provide insights into differences between conventional Reynolds and Favre averaging of the mean-flow and turbulent quantities. Study of the turbulence energy budget for the two cases shows that compressibility effects due to turbulent density and pressure fluctuations are insignificant. In particular, the dilatational dissipation and the mean product of the pressure and dilatation fluctuations are very small, contrary to the results of simulations for sheared homogeneous compressible turbulence and to recent proposals for models for general compressible turbulent flows. This provides a possible explanation of why the Van Driest density-weighted transformation (which ignores any true turbulent compressibility effects) is so successful in correlating compressible boundary-layer data. Finally, it is found that the DNS data do not support the strong Reynolds analogy. A more general representation of the analogy is analysed and shown to match the DNS data very well.
