A number of possible relationships between climate change and water quality of Dutch surface waters have been investigated and an indicative quantification of the impact of climate change on water quality has been established. The analysis focused on water quality during periods of low flow and extreme heat, which are assumed to increase in frequency and intensity due to climate change. The results indicate that the impact of climate change on water quality cannot be generalised and should be assessed on a case by case basis. However, the impact on extreme situations (floods and droughts) seems to be largest, whilst water quality under average discharge conditions appears to be relatively unchanged.

The impacts of climate change on water quality of water bodies are associated with the climatic extreme events (heavy rainfall and flood, heat, drought, wildfires, cyclones, hurricane, super storms) as the major drivers that require knowledge of understanding. Most research studies present the role of climate change in threatening water quality, risks on drinking water and contributions of catchment in water pollution, but less attention has directed to specific sensitive water quality parameters, appropriate methodologies, risks on ecosystem and managerial practice to reduce the impacts. This review highlight the of effect climate change on surface water bodies based on recent literatures on the impacts of climate change on water quality and promote practical opportunity for better management of these impacts. We conclude that consideration of climate change preparedness plan in catchments is the best option to adopt for minimization of climate change impacts on water quality of water bodies.

Industrialization and urbanization in the United Kingdom has led to practices that impact the quality of their river systems. In a recent 2020 report, 0% of rivers in England meet the current criteria of ‘good health’. Climate change will increase the frequency of flooding and compound this alarming issue. Phytoremediation is a nature-based strategy that employs the use of plants to uptake waste materials such as heavy metals and antibiotic waste. Here, we recommend UK counties use phytoremediation-based strategies in conjunction with community involvement to improve river quality and make communities around river systems more resilient against the impacts of climate change.
