European Union legislation sets mandatory emission and fuel consumption reduction targets for new vehicles and therefore economy remains a key challenge for automotive engineers. Optimizing the transmission shift schedule for an automatic transmission with double clutch is an important part of improving fuel economy. Using simulation and optimization algorithms can ensure that a truly optimal shift schedule is implemented. The main objective of this paper focuses on study the performance of a vehicle with a dual clutch transmission (DCT), with special emphasis on optimizing the shifting schedule using optimization algorithms. In order to study and simulate the shifting strategy the dynamic model is developed based on an existing model in MATLAB Simulink software. In the first phase of the paper a detailed description of the DCT technology, its main functional components and dynamic characteristics are explored. In the second phase model development and simulation concerns the major part of this work, to find the optimal shift schedule for different engine speed and engine torque as it accelerates through the transmission gears by engaging the dual clutches. Finally, the simulation results were evaluated and presented which successfully demonstrate the performance improvement of a dual clutch transmission with an optimized shifting strategy.

Traditional shift schedule of automatic transmission cannot meet driving requirements when vehicle is running under conditions of complex road and special driving intentions. On the basis of the analysis of vehicle dynamics, recognition methods of road environment and driving intentions were proposed according to the changes of vehicle dynamic parameters. Traditional shift schedule was rectified and simulation was carried out in vehicle equiped with dual clutch transmission. The results shown that the rectified shift schedule can meet driving requirements. This study can provide an effective shift schedule for automatic transmission.

AbstractThe calibration of conventional, hybrid and electric drivetrains is an important process during the development phase of any vehicle. Therefore, to optimize the comfort and dynamic behavior (known as driveability), many test drives are performed by experienced drivers during different driving maneuvers, e.g., launch, re-launch or gear shift. However, the process can be kept more consistent and independent of human-based deviations by using objective ratings. This study first introduces an objective rating system developed for the launch behavior of conventional vehicles with automatic transmission, dual-clutch transmission, and alternative drivetrains. Then, the launch behavior, namely comfort and dynamic quality, is compared between two conventional vehicles, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and a battery electric vehicle. Results show the benefits of pure electric drivetrains due to the lack of launch and shifting elements, as well as the usage of a highly dynamic electric motor. While the plug-in hybrid achieves a 10% higher overall rating compared to the baseline conventional vehicle, the pure electric vehicle even achieves a 21% higher overall rating. The results also highlight the optimization potential of battery electric vehicles regarding their comfort and dynamic characteristics. The transitions and the gradient of the acceleration build-up have a major influence on the launch quality.

Heavy dump vehicles are usually working with big load changes and bad work environment, thus change the friction performance of transmission clutches, as well as great affect the shift quality seriously, which influence the vehicle performance. Many researchers developed a lot to design a useful automatic transmission control system. Using PID tracking control and Monte Carlo method, the controller based on an dynamic model was set up to analyze the shifting process of automatic transmission and its robustness in this paper. The shift process was divided into four stages, low-gear phase, torque phase, inertia phase and high-gear phase. The model presents the process from the first gear to the second gear when the torque has big change.Since the jerk and the friction work of clutch are both related to the speed of clutch which was easier to control, it was chose as the target to control the oil pressure for satisfying the requirement of shift quality. The simulation software, Maplesim and Simulink, were used to build the vehicle model and shifting controller for simulation under different working conditions, and the maximum jerk was changed from 34 m/s3 to 12 m/s3 after the optimization. In this paper the Monte Carlo has been used to quantize and evaluate the robustness of the closed-loop system for the friction coefficients and output torque of turbine variation leading by the friction feature parameters and throttle angle changed. Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the effectiveness and robustness of PID controller, which proves that it has good control effect when the throttle is ongoing minor fluctuations. When the throttle is full opening, a quadratic optimal controller based on disturbance is designed by the method of multi-objective optimization. When it changes within 20 percent, PID controller was designed under the guidance of tracking thoughts. The results also show that the controller could still obtain better effect when the friction coefficient ranged from -40 % to 40 % as well as engine torque changed from -20 % to 20 %, which indicates the robustness of controller.
