The issue of reflecting national mentality in the linguistic worldview continues to be relevant as each people has its own specific mindset and common mood related to moral and ethical features of its formation. The article describes a national concept as a complete combination of thought, religions, cultural traditions, folklore that form a conceptual sphere of a language. Therefore, studying the reflection of national identity in the concepts seems to be essential, as the concept itself is a key category in linguistic research of viewing the world through language. The main purpose of this study is to perform a comparative analysis of conceptual spheres of the Russian and English languages. To achieve this purpose we set several tasks: to characterize peculiarities of expressing the key concepts sovest’/conscience, dobro/good, pravda/truth, krasota/beauty in speech; to identify extralinguistic factors fostering common understanding of the conceptual spheres being analyzed in the Russian and English linguistic worldviews. The article uses a complex research methodology, which combines descriptive and analytical methods, as well as the opposition technique and structural and semantic analysis of a word. The paper concludes that only those connotations of the concepts that become a symbol referring to a certain perspective of national mentality are ethnoculturally essential. In the conceptual spheres of English and Russian, key notions defining value systems of these cultures play a significant role. Evolution of material and spiritual culture is reflected in a concept as a single linguistic unit.

The article presents the latest methodology of systematic lexicographic description of the Ukrainian worldview of the second half of the XX – beginning of the XXI centuries, on the basis of which lexicographers of the Institute of Ukrainian Language of the NAS of Ukraine compile a new explanatory dictionary of creative personalities. The dictionary contains a consolidated lexicon and artistic means of language of the leading Ukrainian writers, publicists and translators (Oles Honchar, Yevhen Sverstyuk, Hryhor Tyutyunnyk, Ivan Dziuba, Mykola Lukash, Yuriy Andrukhovych, Oksana Zabuzhko), which provides perspective modeling of the language and conceptual picture of the world, research of idiosyncrasies of creative personalities, elucidation of laws of language and society development. The dictionary is innovative in terms of register and lexicographic methods of systematic vocabulary description. It presents the vocabulary of the era of totalitarianism and the post-totalitarian period, which is not evidenced by explanatory dictionaries. For the lexicographic reproduction of the conceptual dominants of these periods, a system of hyperlinks between dictionary entries compiled from the works of different authors was used. The dictionary combines information about the individual author's worldview and the common understanding of the key concepts of the era by writers. Innovative introduction of culturological and encyclopedic information provides a lexicographic description of the achievements of Ukrainian language creation against the background of universal cultural values. In the future, it is possible to make a systematic lexicographic description of lexical and artistic heritage of the latest Ukrainian writers, the formation of a dictionary of the active type, a common ideographic dictionary. The combined work of the Ukrainian academic lexicographers provides macroscientific research on the development of language and society, deepening the theory of lexicology, lexicography, derivatology, linguoculturology, linguosociology, stylistics, development of the theory of integrated linguistic research.

In the context of the new bi- and polylingual picture of the world, the novel continues to hold leading positions as the leading genre of prose. The Kazakh novel generalizes the aesthetically immanent factors of identity and is created in the Kazakh and Russian languages. Ethno-national identity is important for both the author and the characters. The modern phenomenology of perception actualizes not only the role of the anthropological turn, but also the role of the subjective factor - the reader. Comparative analysis allows you to look at the novel from different conceptual points of view. Transnational tendencies are intensely manifested in the work of prose writers. The search for answers to the most important questions of our time, the challenges of globalization contributes to the disclosure of the ethnocultural world. Opposition one's own/other, one's/another's allows to convey the national attitude and reveal the national image.

<p class="IATED-Affiliation">The phenomenon of joint singing, originating from the traditional old folk song and subsequent choral singing, has developed in Estonia into a significant cultural metaphor– Song Celebrations. Recent decades have brought about rapid changes in Estonian socio-cultural reality: the process of globalisation has raised the question of how to maintain national identity and cultural traditions considering these rapid processes.</p><p class="IATED-Affiliation">The aim of this article is to analyse phenomena of joint singing and Song Celebrations through historical, cultural and educational lens. The subject and corresponding literature were analysed using hermeneutic approach by M. Heidegger, W. Dilthey and H.-G. Gadamer, reflected through the focus of culture and cultural transmission by L.Rauhala, R.McShea, M.J. Taylor and C. A. Thoth.  The drifts of the content and developmental tendencies of joint singing and Song Celebrations between 1962−2011 were investigated by means of comparative analysis.</p><p class="IATED-Affiliation">The phenomenon of joint singing that has developed into the Song Celebrations tradition continues to be one the main means of cultural transmission in Estonia.</p><p class="IATED-Affiliation"> </p>

This paper examines the structural semantic approach based on the theory of linguistic relativity to scriptural language as exemplified in Toshihiko Izutsu’s studies of the Qur’anic weltanschauung. According to this theory, each language contains a particular worldview that causes its speakers to view the world in a way different from the speakers of other languages. By an analytical study of the semantic fields and contextual use of the Qur’an’s key conceptual terms, Izutsu explores the semantic factors believed to have been employed by the Qur’an in its Islamization of the jahili (pre-Islamic Arab) worldview. Such an approach exhibits that the Qur’an’s linguistic vision of reality is internally coherent but culturally and historically conditioned. Following a textual analysis, this study critically examines, from both an ethical and a theological perspective, the semantic theory that Izutsu applies to the Qur’an’s key concepts in his two works: God and Man in the Qur’an and Ethico-Religious Concepts in the Qur’an. The objective is to investigate the extent to which semantic analysis could enrich our understanding of the ontological problems raised in the Qur’an.

Проводится сравнительный анализ оперы Дж. Пуччини «Турандот» и пекинской оперы «Принцесса Турандот», который выстраивается на основе оппозиции Запад-Восток. Целью исследования является изучение специфических особенностей пекинской оперы, осуществляемое в опоре на историко-стилевой и культурологический подходы. В ходе исследования доказывается, что принципиальное несовпадение западного классического образца и пекинской версии истории о китайской принцессе определяется разностью культурных традиций, в опоре на которые формируется менталитет творческой элиты Запада и Востока. Теоретическая новизна обусловлена выявлением культурных отличий, обнаруживаемых в таком синтетическом жанре музыкального искусства, как западная опера и пекинская опера. Практическая значимость состоит в возможности использовать полученные данные в процессе интерпретации и реинтерпретации сказки К. Гоцци не в контексте оперного творчества, но и в рамках мирового художественного наследия, частью которого выступает спектакль «Принцесса Турандот». Поставленный в 1922 году Е. Вахтанговым, он и сегодня остается в репертуаре театра, вызывая восторг у публики. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the operas “Turandot” and “Princess Turandot”, which is built on the basis of the West-East opposition. In one case, we are talking about the creation of G. Puccini, in the other - about the Peking opera. The aim of the research is to study the specific features of the Peking opera, carried out in reliance on the historical, stylistic and culturological approaches. The study proves that the fundamental discrepancy between the Western classical model and the Peking version of the story about the Chinese princess is determined by the difference in cultural traditions, on the basis of which the mentality of the creative elite of the West and the East is formed. The theoretical novelty of the study is due to the identification of cultural differences found in such a synthetic genre of musical art as Western opera and Peking opera. The practical significance of the research lies in the possibility to use the obtained data in the process of interpretation and reinterpretation of C. Gozzi's fairy tale not in the context of operatic creativity, but also within the framework of the world artistic heritage, of which the play “Princess Turandot” is a part. Staged in 1922 by E. Vakhtangov, it remains in the theater's repertoire today, delighting the audience.

We introduce key concepts that have guided the diverse case studies of this special issue on smart cities. Calling into question Global North conceptions of the smart city, nine different articles analyse smart city projects around the world, with particular attention paid to the need to provincialise our understanding of these projects as well as to consider their relationship to worlding strategies. These case studies demonstrate the diversity of what smart cities can be and the need to consider, through comparative analysis, the broader power geometries in which they are imbedded.

The article discusses the thesis that the German verb sollen expresses a special type of modality that occupies an intermediate position between necessity and possibility, i.e. the modality of weak ontological necessity. The modality expressed by the verb sollen can be characterized as follows: sollen points to the correlation of the state of aff airs P with a certain logic of development of events, not the only possible, but salient in some respect. This is the diff erence between this type of modality and “classical” necessity, which assumes that the state of aff airs P corresponds to the only possible logic of the world. The study was conducted on the material of the German-Russian parallel subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus, using the “monofocal” method of contrastive analysis, according to which the way of translating the analyzed linguistic unit into another language is used as a tool for its semantic analysis.

The article deals with the features of the Russian policy of agriculture support in comparison with the EU and the US policies. Comparative analysis is held considering the scales and levels of collective agriculture support, sources of supporting means, levels and mechanisms of support of agricultural production manufacturers, its consumers, agrarian infrastructure establishments, manufacturers and consumers of each of the principal types of agriculture production. The author makes an attempt to estimate the consequences of Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization based on a hypothesis that this will result in unification of the manufacturers and consumers’ protection levels in Russia with the countries that have long been WTO members.
