Mastitis in heifers is costly, affecting milk quality and reducing milk production throughout the first lactation. Several studies have reported the beneficial effects of internal teat sealants (ITS) on mastitis in heifers, but there appear to be no reports on the subsequent effects on milk quality and production. The consequences of using ITS before calving were examined in a retrospective study in which two cohorts of primiparous heifers (n = 189), treated with an ITS precalving, were compared with four cohorts when ITS was not used (n = 287), using detailed bacteriology and herd-test production data in a DairyNZ research herd. In years when ITS was used, fewer (P < 0.001) heifers were detected with an intramammary infection at the first milking after calving, and fewer (P < 0.001) cases of clinical mastitis were detected in the first 30 days of lactation, than in years when ITS was not used. During the first 8 weeks of lactation, heifers treated with ITS had a lower (P < 0.0001) somatic cell count and produced 49 kg more milk (P < 0.05) and 5 kg more milksolids (P < 0.001) than did non-treated counterparts. These positive benefits associated with use of ITS provide sufficient evidence to justify further investigation in the form of a prospective controlled study.

Two experiments were carried out to compare mechanical milking in mid-level (ML) and low-level (LL) milkline in goats. The first trial used 40 intramammary infection (IMI)-free goats that had been milked in ML during a pre-experimental period of 4±1 weeks post partum. These animals were divided into two groups (n=20), randomly assigning each group to ML or LL milking for a 17-week experimental period. During this period, several strategies were applied to increase teat exposure to pathogens in both experimental groups. The IMI rate was the same in both experimental groups (30% of goats), although the majority of new infections appeared earlier in ML (weeks 1–5) than in LL (weeks 7–16). Teat-end vacuum range (maximum minus minimum vacuum) was higher in ML than in LL, but no significant differences were found in the remaining variables [milk production and composition, somatic cell count (SCC), frequency of liner slips+teatcups fall off]. In the second experiment, in a crossover design (54 goats in fourth month of lactation; 2 treatments, ML and LL, in 2 experimental periods each lasting 1 week) it was observed that both the milk fractioning (reduced machine milk and increased machine stripping) and average machine milk flow worsened slightly in ML milking; in contrast, no differences were observed in total milking time or teat thickness changes after milking. It was concluded that the differences found between ML and LL are not sufficiently important to discourage breeders from using ML in goat milking.

(Evaluation of milk production and quality in mastitis cows) ABSTRACT. The level of udder inflammation is one of the factors that can affect the production and quality of cow's milk. This study was aimed to determine the relationship between milk production and quality produced by mastitis cows. The material used was 30 Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cows with a lactation period of III-V and a lactation month of 3-4. Inflammation degree of the mammary gland was determined by the California mastitis test (X1) and somatic cell count (X2) with a breed method relationship between milk production (Y1) or milk quality (fat: Y2, protein: Y3, and lactose: Y4) were determined by the multiple linear regression. The results showed that 30% of the udder quarter were healthy while 70% of the udder quarter were infected with mastitis with different levels of inflammation. There was a strong negative correlation (P 0,05; r = 0.740) between milk production, CMT and SCC score with Y1 = 16.126 - 3.064X1 - 0.001X2. Moreover, the correlation between milk production and milk quality (fat, protein, lactose) also showed a strong negative linear correlation (P 0,05) with the equation Y2 = 3.481 - 0.157X1 - 0.000X2 (r = 0.739), Y3 = 3.048 - 0.124X1 - 0.000X2 (r = 0.653) and Y4 = 4.605 - 0.106X1 - 0.001X2 (r = 0.623). In conclusion, the increased mammary inflammation level will result the decrease in milk production and milk quality.

Abstract: This study aimed to determine whether prepartum antimicrobial and/or Escherichia coli J5 vaccination in dairy heifers influence the milk production, milk quality, and estimate their economic benefit. Thus, 33 dairy heifers were enrolled in four groups using a split-splot design. Groups were: (G1) prepartum antimicrobial infusion and vaccination with an E. coli J5 bacterin, (G2) prepartum antimicrobial infusion, (G3) vaccination with an E. coli J5 bacterin, and (G4) control heifers. Composite milk samples for somatic cell count, total bacteria count and milk composition were collected 15 days after calving and every 15 days until the end of the experiment. Bacteriological analysis was carried out at the end of study. The milk production and the incidence of clinical cases of mastitis, as well as the costs associated with them were recorded. The results demonstrate a reduction on clinical mastitis rates by preventive strategies, which implicated in lower volume of discarded milk (0.99, 1.01, 1.04 and 3.98% for G1, G2, G3 and G4, respectively) and higher economic benefit. Thus, in well-managed dairy herds the prevention of heifer mastitis by vaccination or antimicrobial therapy can reduce the amount of antimicrobials needed to treat clinical mastitis cases and the days of discarded milk.
