This study investigated advocacy in selected academic libraries in the southwest in order to ascertain methods used and challenges faced in the course of advocating for their libraries with possible solutions. It has become necessary to create awareness and also make our libraries visible to the world so that they can be supported in cash and kind. This enables librarians provide the necessary service hence patronage is encouraged. The study adopted a survey research design with two sets of questionnaire(s) which had 34 and 25 items respectively and interview. Random selection of the population comprised of two hundred and seventy seven (277) librarians (professionals and paraprofessionals) and library users mostly lecturers’ from different departments from the University of Ibadan, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, Obafemi Awolowo, University Ile Ife and Lead City University Ibadan respectively. Results showed that all the academic libraries in this study have not started advocacy, do not have advocacy plan in their strategic objectives. Therefore, librarians and other library personnel ought to be sent for trainings, workshops and seminars to equip them for advocacy activities. The study recommended that similar study be carried out in other academic libraries across Nigeria to enable librarians understand its importance.

While children's services are traditionally associated with public libraries, the increase in students with dependent children means that academic libraries are increasingly being called to provide family-friendly spaces. Using the University of Maryland Libraries as a case study, the authors detail the process of developing, implementing, and overseeing family-friendly services, including a family study room and activity kits for children. They argue there is value in welcoming families into the academy and projects, such as a family study room, worthy not only for the contributions they make to the community but also for the opportunity to enact joy in our daily practice as academic librarians.

Many careers services are realising the increasing importance of access to accurate information, and are further developing resource centres that clients can use to research their work and study options. When the Careers and Appointments Service at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) was re-established in early 1995, a career resource centre was created to support career counselling activities, and to give students access to a wide range of employer and occupational information. This case study outlines the tasks undertaken in setting up the centre, and reflects on issues involved.

Like many academic libraries throughout the United States, the James C. Kirkpatrick Library at the University of Central Missouri has increasingly documented its impact on the university and its students. A library statistics dashboard tool was developed internally to assist with increased assessment activities. The Information Technology Librarian and the Library Assessment Team collaborated to create the dashboard tool. This case study discusses the impetus for developing the tool and provides a detailed explanation of the creation and testing of the dashboard. The chapter also describes the outcomes of using the dashboard tool in the library's assessment activities, along with recommendations for how other libraries may develop similar tools and skills within their organizations.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to look at staff development and its challenges in the University of Malawi Libraries. Design/methodology/approach – A case study design was used to collect qualitative and quantitative data. University Budget Estimates from 2004/2005 to 2010/2011 financial years were analysed. Data from the University of Malawi Strategic Plan 2005-2009 were examined. Interviews were conducted with college librarians in the University of Malawi Libraries. Documentary evidence was also used. Findings – Study findings indicate that staff development in the University of Malawi Libraries has emphasised on professional qualification in Library and Information Studies. However, due to financial constraints, the majority of the library staff lacks LIS professional qualifications. This study recommends that libraries should consider budgeting for continuing professional development (CPD). Practical implications – Staff development requires continuous funding and time. This study recommends the CPD approach to staff development in academic libraries. The study also recommends the introduction of an education levy to benefit skills and training needs for higher education institutions. Originality/value – There is dearth of literature on staff development in academic libraries in Malawi. This paper seeks to recommend CPD.
