An industrial strategy emerges from possibilities for structural change, that depend on material constraints and opportunities afforded by economic structure, the distribution of power in society and the institutional arrangements organized at the political level. Building on a structural political economy perspective, this article develops a structure–power–institutions conceptual framework to describe how economic structure, the distribution of power, and institutions interact through a ‘circular process,’ which is useful for analysing the historical transformation of industrial strategy. In this framework, an industrial strategy refers to the institutional arrangements through which the government manages emerging conflicts or agreements between different powers and influences structural change. As an illustrative case study, the structure–power–institutions framework is applied to analyse the historical transformation of US industrial strategy from the era of Alexander Hamilton to that of Donald Trump.

Development of overall economy of any country largely depends upon the characteristics of different prominent sectors such as agriculture, industry, services, etc. Sharp structural change in prominent sectors are experienced by the Pakistan’s economy during the last four decades, in which industrial and service sector have exhibited an extra ordinary rate of growth, while the agricultural sector did not shown that rate of growth which was experienced during the time of green revolution. Due to these structural changes in the prominent sectors volatility of growth rate has been experienced by the economy. To the extent that most of the recent volatility in growth rate of GDP can be attributed to the increasing share of the some volatility of the some prominent sectors, the analysis of their volatility can be useful in providing some enlightenment on the factors behind this phenomenon and its implications for the formulation of the policy in the future.

For complex equipments, the phenomena of system declining such as wear and fatigue often takes place and spreads after a period of running. So it is important to identify the interior structural change of system during maintenance to avoid the system to be broken abruptly. Traditionally there are two methods to analyze and predict the structural change of system. One is from the monitoring data of equipments. Another is from the mechanism of structural changing and the interior working process of equipments. In this paper a combining method, which combining the advantages of the above two methods, is used to identify the structural change of internal combustion engines. The principle of the method is to firstly build an analytical system model, in which the system parameters stand for the structural parameters or constraints. Then the current value of system parameters in the model can be identified by comparing the calculating responding results and the detected responding data. From the varying of system parameters the structural change of system can be deduced. For internal combustion engines (ICEs), the most important CPSR (combustion Chamber-Piston-cylinder Sleeve-piston Rings) system is taken as the research object. A multidisciplinary model is built to simulate the interior working processes, especially the combustion process, the structural dynamics process, the tribology process and the coupling processes among them. Then the seeking-roots method (SRM) is used to identify the value of system parameters. A case study on a low power gasoline engine verifies the above method. In the case study, the blow by gap, which stands for the wear of piston rings and cylinder sleeve, is identified with the detected combustion pressure. The case study shows that the method of this paper can identify the structural change of complex equipments. It can provide accurate information for equipments maintenance as well as the residual life prediction.

This study explores the movement for an ›Economy for the Common Good‹ from a sustainability transitions perspective. Special interest lies in the integration of companies in a social movement. The underlying study was carried out in the region of South Tyrol, Italy. It reveals what institutional work was involved, explores impacts and reflects on the role that companies, especially small and medium-sized ones, can play in structural change.

Abstract The terms "resilience" and "vulnerability" have both acquired prominence in recent academic and political debate. Originating in the natural sciences, they have meanwhile established themselves not only in the social sciences, but also—and more recently—in the areas of economic geography, as well as urban and regional development. Nevertheless, as is the case with many of the issues adopted from the natural sciences, the social sciences have had to struggle to fully capture and conceptualise the theoretical meaning of the terms. The present article will explore the added-value and limits of using the notions of resilience and vulnerability in relation to structural change in old industrial regions. It will also draw on empirical information from a qualitative case study of Lusatian Lakeland, a former lignite mining region in Eastern Germany that is currently being turned into a tourist destination. Research focuses on analysing the sectoral and regional cooperation between various actors in the region. The introduction of the terms resilience and vulnerability in this case study raises some interesting questions about the nature and interpretation of regional development processes that are characterised by a high degree of uncertainty and severe structural change. The research results also highlight the conceptual difficulties these terms present, particularly in the context of structural transformation.
