Abstract The purpose of leachate processing is to reduce pollutants in leachate without using equipment that requires high investment and complicated maintenance. This research aims to determine the impact of leachate recirculation and bulking agents on leachate quality. Fresh solid waste recirculated using artificial leachate with a continuous flow of 1 L/h. The study is conducting for 14 days on a laboratory scale. On the 14th day, combination recirculation and bulking accelerate the increased pH value. Leachate recirculation increases the potential for contact between methanogenic bacteria and dissolved organic matter and contributes to buffering pH during the hydrolysis process. R3 produces a higher Electric Conductivity (EC) value than other reactors since the 7th day. This increase is probably due to the addition of dissolved salts from solid waste decomposition. The role of the bulking agent may not be too significant for changes in the EC value. On day 14, TDS at R1 was 11,748 mg/L, R2 was 12.144 mg/L, and R3 was 14.916 mg/L.

The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) codisposed with municipal solid waste (MSW) on landfill stabilization according to the leachate quality in terms of organic matter and nitrogen contents. Six simulated landfills, that is, three conventional and three recirculated, were employed with different ratios of MSWI BA to MSW. The results depicted that, after 275-day operation, the ratio of MSWI BA to fresh refuse of 1 : 10 (V : V) in the landfill was still not enough to provide sufficient acid-neutralizing capacity for a high organic matter composition of MSW over 45.5% (w/w), while the ratio of MSWI BA to fresh refuse of 1 : 5 (V : V) could act on it. Among the six experimental landfills, leachate quality only was improved in the landfill operated with the BA addition (the ratio of MSWI BA to fresh refuse of 1 : 5 (V : V)) and leachate recirculation.

The present study was conducted to monitor the quality of leachate generated  from solid waste landfills operated under different mode over a period of 335 days using a bench scale lysimeters. Sixty six kg waste sample reflecting the typical municipal solid waste (MSW) streams generated in Al-Diwaniyah city open dump was used to fill both sanitary and bioreactor lysimeters  to study the influence of leachate recirculation on quality of leachate  in landfills located in semi-arid areas. Leachate quality is frequently monitored in terms of pH, electrical conductivity (EC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), chloride, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN). The results show that pH and electrical conductivity  values were clearly fluctuated in the rainy season, while in the dry season the values tend to decrease steadily with a close correlation between the chloride and electrical conductivity parameters. The study reveals that bioreactor landfill with leachate recirculation appears to be the most effective option in the removal of organic matter by 98% removal efficiency compared with 58% removal efficiency in a sanitary landfill. The main difference between recirculation and non-recirculation options is determined through leachate quality.

The article analyzes the impact of certain factors on the volume of investments in the environment. Regression equations describing the relationship between the volume of investment in the environment and each of the influencing factors are constructed, the coefficients of the Pearson pair correlation between the dependent variable and the influencing factors, as well as pairwise between the influencing factors, are calculated. The average approximation error for each regression equation is determined. A correlation matrix is constructed and a conclusion is made. The developed econometric model is implemented in the program of separate collection of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Moscow. The efficiency of the model of investment management in the environment is evaluated on the example of the growth of planned investments in the activities of companies specializing in the export and processing of solid waste.

The bonding of wood with assembly adhesives is crucial for manufacturing wood composites, such as solid wood panels, glulam, furniture parts, and sport and musical instruments. This work investigates 13 hardwoods—bangkirai, beech, black locust, bubinga, ipé, iroko, maçaranduba, meranti, oak, palisander, sapelli, wengé and zebrano—and analyzes the impact of their selected structural and physical characteristics (e.g., the density, cold water extract, pH value, roughness, and wettability) on the adhesion strength with the polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive Multibond SK8. The adhesion strength of the bonded hardwoods, determined by the standard EN 205, ranged in the dry state from 9.5 MPa to 17.2 MPa, from 0.6 MPa to 2.6 MPa in the wet state, and from 8.5 MPa to 19.2 MPa in the reconditioned state. The adhesion strength in the dry state of the bonded hardwoods was not influenced by their cold water extracts, pH values, or roughness parallel with the grain. On the contrary, the adhesion strength was significantly with positive tendency influenced by their higher densities, lower roughness parameters perpendicular to the grain, and lower water contact angles.

Insufficient staff, inappropriate collection vehicles, limited operating budgets and growing, hard to reach populations mean that solid waste management remains limited in most developing countries; Malawi is no exception. We estimated the willingness to pay (WTP) for two hypothetical solid waste collection services. Additionally, we tested the impact of the WTP question positioning relative to environmental perceptions on respondents’ WTP. The first scenario involved a five minute walk to a disposal facility; the second scenario involved a 30 min walk. Additionally, the order of the question was randomized within the questionnaire. A WTP value of K1780 was found for the five minute walk scenario when the question was placed first, and K2138 when placed after revealing the respondent’s perceptions on the environment. In the 30 min walk scenario, WTP was K945 when placed first and K1139 when placed after revealing the respondent’s perceptions on the environment. The estimated values indicate that there is both a willingness to pay for solid waste services and that there are at least two options that would be acceptable to the community; a pilot scale implementation would be required to validate the hypothetical values, especially given the dependency on problem framing. Community financing should be considered as a sustainable approach to solid waste management in underserved areas.
