Abstract There is consistent evidence that caregiving for grandchildren is psychologically, emotionally and physically challenging for grandparents. However, many of them may not be able to receive the support they need from their own families or public services. Using the Selective Optimization with Compensation framework and principles of solution-oriented cognitive models, we implemented a six-week session pilot program to increase grandparents’ effective coping strategies, reduce stress, and improve parenting and communication with grandchildren. Preliminary data from 22 grandparents suggest that participants improved their use of effective selection strategies to set priorities and pursue goals related to their wellbeing and the quality of their relationship with grandchildren. Their pre-post test scores also indicated a higher level of parental efficacy, social relations and confidence in organizing their time and priorities. Results indicate that focusing on solution-oriented strategies may empower grandparents to improve their psychological adjustment and take care of their needs.

AbstractThe study was conducted to identify the effect of foot reflexology on the quality of life among menopausal women employed in various schools from 01.08.2011 to 01.10.2011. An evaluative approach with one group pre-test post-test design was used for the study. The present study was conducted among various schools in Mangalore. The collected data from 117 samples were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Distribution of the samples based on the quality of life revealed that 78.6% had a good quality of life, 15.4% had an average quality of life and 6% had a very good quality of life. With regard to the menopausal symptoms, 55.6%, 24.8% and 19.7% experienced mild, moderate and severe symptoms respectively. 52 women with moderate to severe symptoms were selected and administered foot reflexology for 10 consecutive days. The mean post-test scores of the subjects in the quality of life was 59.43 were significantly greater than the mean pre-test score of 53.89 and the mean post-test scores in the menopausal symptoms was 16.82 which was significantly lower than the mean pre-test score of 21.82. The study also revealed a negative correlation (r= -0.653, p<0.005) between the quality of life and menopausal symptoms. There was significant association between the demographic variables and the quality of life.

Abstract Introduction: Prehospital use of lung ultrasound (LUS) by paramedics to guide the diagnoses and treatment of patients has expanded over the past several years. However, almost all of this education has occurred in a classroom or hospital setting. No published prehospital use of LUS simulation software within an ambulance currently exists. Study Objective: The objective of this study was to determine if various ambulance driving conditions (stationary, constant acceleration, serpentine, and start-stop) would impact paramedics’ abilities to perform LUS on a standardized patient (SP) using breath-holding to simulate lung pathology, or to perform LUS using ultrasound (US) simulation software. Primary endpoints included the participating paramedics’: (1) time to acquiring a satisfactory simulated LUS image; and (2) accuracy of image recognition and interpretation. Secondary endpoints for the breath-holding portion included: (1) the agreement between image interpretation by paramedic versus blinded expert reviewers; and (2) the quality of captured LUS image as determined by two blinded expert reviewers. Finally, a paramedic LUS training session was evaluated by comparing pre-test to post-test scores on a 25-item assessment requiring the recognition of a clinical interpretation of prerecorded LUS images. Methods: Seventeen paramedics received a 45-minute LUS lecture. They then performed 25 LUS exams on both SPs and using simulation software, in each case looking for lung sliding, A and B lines, and seashore or barcode signs. Pre- and post-training, they completed a 25-question test consisting of still images and videos requiring pathology recognition and formulation of a clinical diagnosis. Sixteen paramedics performed the same exams in an ambulance during different driving conditions (stationary, constant acceleration, serpentines, and abrupt start-stops). Lung pathology was block randomized based on driving condition. Results: Paramedics demonstrated improved post-test scores compared to pre-test scores (P <.001). No significant difference existed across driving conditions for: time needed to obtain a simulated image; clinical interpretation of simulated LUS images; quality of saved images; or agreement of image interpretation between paramedics and blinded emergency physicians (EPs). Image acquisition time while parked was significantly greater than while the ambulance was driving in serpentines (Z = -2.898; P = .008). Technical challenges for both simulation techniques were noted. Conclusion: Paramedics can correctly acquire and interpret simulated LUS images during different ambulance driving conditions. However, simulation techniques better adapted to this unique work environment are needed.

The Army College Fund is a program started in 1981 that offers post-service educational benefits to eligible recruits. It was hoped that the program would increase the quality of Army recruits by attracting more of the college-oriented. Using data from three Army sources, the author examines enrollment and financial participation in the program from 1981 to 1985. He finds that enrollment grew rapidly during that time and that the quality of Army recruits, as measured by Armed Forces Qualification Test scores, also dramatically increased. The program may turn out to be more expensive than anticipated, however, because the number of participating soldiers—those making the co-payments necessary to receive benefits later—has exceeded expectations.

AbstractGiving feedback to peers can be a valuable learning experience for a feedback provider. However, different types of products require different types of feedback, which, in turn, may lead to different learning outcomes. The current study investigates the effect on the learning of feedback providers of reviewing different types of products. Secondary school students (n =127) were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions: giving peer feedback on either concept maps or answers to open-ended test questions. Both types of product, created by the researchers, were comparable with regard to content: they included the same misconceptions and were both of average quality. Giving peer feedback was part of a chemistry lesson delivered in an online inquiry learning environment. Students’ post-test scores, their own learning products, and the quality of the provided feedback were analysed to check for an effect on learning. There was no difference in post-test scores between the conditions, but the quality of the provided feedback predicted post-test scores. This indicates that it is not the type of product reviewed that matters, but the effort that students put into giving feedback. Possible implications for practice and further research directions are discussed.

The quality of English instruction in Indonesia is not uniformly spread across the country. Those in big cities are more likely to receive qualified English instruction than students in rural areas. Bidikmisi kids do not have access to additional English learning resources, despite the fact that they require them. Finally, because English proficiency is so vital, their competition is low. As a result, Bidikmisi pupils' basic English skills must be enhanced in order to be more competitive. Basic English Training is provided to Bidikmisi students at IAI As'adiyah Sengkang who need it the most as part of this program. Aside from the pretest and post-test, 12 meetings were held. The results suggest that Bidikmisi students' basic English skills have improved. However, they must be persistent in their efforts to improve their knowledge in order to greatly boost their competency. It may be concluded that the basic English training program for Bidikmisi pupils aids in the development of human resource capabilities in the English field.

The aspiration to keep the synergy in relations between majorities and minorities repeatedly emerges as the cause of conflicts in social relations. It is also a subject of the interest of the multicultural education, particularly in countries of Eastern Europe, building contacts with the culturally and ethnically diverse groups to a wider scale. Relations in culturally, religiously and ethnic diverse societies, are becoming more and more related to the personal attitudes and a given policy. These issues acquire in the prison circumstances even greater significance, as given moods and personal attitudes of the prison staff create the pragmatic aspects of the professional activities addressed to the sentenced. Additionally, the key role is played by the quality of the penitentiary policy and the legal culture. The article presents the comparative analysis of the research carried out in 2016 amongst the prison staff in Poland. The subject of the research concerned attitudes that influence the decisive processes. The personal relations have been analyzed in the context of the relation with the sentenced Muslims. The aim of the research was not only to reveal the quality of the decisions concerning the sentenced Muslims, but also the sources of such decisions. The latter, in consequence, may shift, as the research results prove, towards synergy or discrimination. The diversification of the discrimination was one of the intriguing aspects, disclosed at various levels that not always explicitly concerned the discrimination of the minority.
