Evolutionary Modeling of Routes: The Case of Road Design

In this study a route is defined as the path that a linear structure or facility follows in the terrain. Linear structures comprise facilities such as roads, motorways, railways, pipelines, electrical power lines, and telephone cables, each of these structures requiring specific technical parameters in what concerns the geometry of the path and having different effects on the terrain they traverse. Amongst these structures, roads and motorways are the group that creates the greatest overall impact; accordingly Portuguese legislation requires an environmental impact assessment (EIA) process as part of the necessary licensing approval. Usually the alternative (or alternatives) that undergo the EIA process is justified in terms of technical and economical issues. The result is that if major environmental impacts are identified by the EIA study, a myriad of mitigation measures are proposed, very seldom the redesign of the path being carried out (Guimarães Pereira & Antunes, 1996). Preliminary studies that precede the implementation of these types of projects are technically detailed and often come together with economical feasibility studies, shelving environmental issues for later assessment. In the methodology proposed in this chapter a multidimensional evaluation methodology, multicriteria evaluation, will be combined with the robustness of a search methodology, genetic algorithms (GAs) to generate alternative road routes that take into consideration environmental, economical, technical, and social criteria. These criteria are referenced to the physical space where the road is to be placed and therefore this methodology is embedded into a geographic information system (GIS). Genetic algorithms are particularly attractive to apply to multi-modal problems, allowing the exploration of spatial features to eventually find “best compromise” alternatives because these algorithms proceed their search by maintaining a population of solutions, that they can simultaneously exploit for their efficiency.1 Moreover, the particular mixing mechanism provides the means to recombine solutions and explore the search space. The remainder of this chapter describes evolutionary modeling of road routes, in particular the coding onto a GA of the geometric algorithm that accounts for the technical aspects of motorway siting. The details of the implementation of the MCDA-GA methodology, running within the GIS GRASS 4.1 (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) and its application to generate and evaluate alternative routes of a section of a Portuguese complementary itinerary (IC7) will be presented.

This paper deals with safety at horizontal curves on two-lane roads outside urban areas and the way the road design standards of different European countries account for this safety aspect. After a review of some research results, the main aspects of curve geometry and the curve's place in the horizontal alignment are analyzed. The main conclusions are that the traditional design speed approach is insufficient and that formal complementary rules in road design standards, especially to improve compatibility between successive elements of the alignment, must be introduced. If such complementary rules already exist in some national standards, they are neither frequent nor homogeneous throughout the different countries, and it seems that they are not based on sufficiently developed knowledge.

The analysis of road safety is critical in road design. Complying to guidelines is not enough to ensure the highest safety levels, so many of them encourage designers to virtually recreate and test their roads, benefitting from the evolution of driving simulators in recent years. However, an accurate recreation of the road and its environment represents a real bottleneck in the process. A very important limitation lies in the diversity of input data, from different sources and requiring specific adaptations for every single simulator. This paper aims at showing a framework for recreating faster virtual scenarios by using an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)-based file. This methodology was compared to two other conventional methods for developing driving scenarios. The main outcome of this study has demonstrated that with a data exchange file in IFC format, virtual scenarios can be faster designed to carry out safety audits with driving simulators. As a result, the editing, programming, and processing times were substantially reduced using the proposed IFC exchange file format through a BIM (Building Information Modeling) model. This methodology facilitates cost-savings, execution, and optimization resources in road safety analysis.

Outfitting is a critical stage in the shipbuilding process. Within the outfitting, the construction of pipe systems is a phase that has a significant effect on time and cost. While cutting the pipes required for the pipe systems in shipyards, the cutting process is usually performed randomly. This can result in large amounts of trim losses. In this paper, we present an approach to minimize these losses. With the proposed method it is aimed to base the pipe cutting process on a specific systematic. To solve this problem, Genetic Algorithms (GA), which gives successful results in solving many problems in the literature, have been used. Different types of genetic operators have been used to investigate the search space of the problem well. The results obtained have proven the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The general two-dimensional cutting stock problem is concerned with the optimum layout and arrangement of two-dimensional shapes within the spatial constraints imposed by the cutting stock. The main objective is to maximize the utilization of the cutting stock material. This paper presents some of the results obtained from applying a combination of genetic algorithms and heuristic approaches to the nesting of dissimilar shapes. Genetic algorithms are stochastically based optimization approaches which mimic nature's evolutionary process in finding global optimal solutions in a large search space. The paper discusses the method by which the problem is defined and represented for analysis and introduces a number of new problem-specific genetic algorithm operators that aid in the rapid conversion to an optimum solution.

The analysis of the existing traffic was carried out, a new scheme of traffic organization at the intersection of Mayakovsky street - Chkalov street was proposed, calculations of traffic light cycles at these intersections were carried out, taking into account the introduction of new traffic light objects. The results of the research will solve a number of problems of the road complex of the city of Shakhty to improve the transport and operational condition of the existing network of pub-lic roads of local importance and structures on them. To bring technical parameters and levels of engineering equipment of roads in compliance with the reached sizes of intensity of traffic.

<p>After a heavy rainfall event on August 31<sup>st</sup>, 2019, a debris flow at the Dawinbach in the municipality of Strengen (Tyrol, Austria) caused a blockage of the culvert below the provincial road B-316 and deposition in the residential area. The debris deposition raised up to 2 to 3 meters on the road and led to property damage to real estate. The total volume of the debris flow was approximately 15 000 cubic meters.</p><p>In order to control a further debris flow of this magnitude, the Austrian Service of Torrent and Avalanche Control started to construct mitigation measures. They include a channel relocation in order to significantly increase the channel crosssection. Hence the construction company STRABAG is also relocating the provincial road bridge.</p><p>Since the risk for this road section and for the workers on site is particularly high during the construction period, a combined monitoring and early warning concept was developed and implemented by the BOKU, Vienna and the company IBTP Koschuch.</p><p>The monitoring site consisting of a pulse compression radar and a pull rope system was installed 800m upstream from the fan. The combination of the two sensors now results in three major advantages.</p><ul><li>At sensor level, the system operates redundantly.</li> <li>A more reliable differentiation between increased discharge or debris flow is given.</li> <li>In the event of a false alarm, the system provides easier diagnosis and assignment of the fault.</li> </ul><p>Two events of increased runoff occurred during the deployment period. Both were successfully detected by the pulse compression radar. Here, the first event was used for threshold validation of the radar unit. Thus, an alarm could already be sent out automatically for the second one. The road is controlled by an integrated light signal system consisting of three traffic lights. A siren near the construction site can warn workers of an impending event by means of an acoustic signal. The reaction time after the alarm has been triggered is between 75 and 150 seconds, depending on the speed of the debris flow. The responsible authorities are informed by sending an SMS chain, which includes details about the type of process and the type of the activated triggering system.</p>

In the tyred machinery chassis dynamometer control system, a fuzzy PID controller was used to adjust the exciting current of a DC dynamometer in order to change the resistance load torque, so the requirement of roller load for simulating the run resistance from the road surface was satisfied. A fuzzy PID arithmetic was designed to control the resistance loads, the system performance was improved by simulation. The software of the detection line measure-control system was designed in VB, the technical parameters of the machinery chassis could the automatically detected.

An investigation into the application of Genetic Algorithms (GA) for the design of electronic analog circuits is presented in this paper. In this paper an investigation of the use of genetic algorithms into the problem of analog circuits design is presented. In a single design stage, circuits are produced that satisfy specific frequency response specifications using circuit structures that are unrestricted and with component values that are chosen from a set of preferred values. The extra degrees of freedom resulting from unbounded circuit structures create a huge search space. It is shown in this paper that Genetic Algorithms can be successfully used to search this space. The application chosen is a LC all pass ladder filter circuit design.Key Words: Computer-Aided Design, Analog Circuits, Artificial Intelligence.
