During the summer of 2003, foliar symptoms including chlorotic spots and chlorotic mottling were observed on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and H. syriacus plants in and around Las Cruces, NM. Detection of Hibiscus latent Fort Pierce virus (HLFPV) in numerous samples suggests that it may be widely distributed in New Mexico, as is the case in Florida and Thailand. Movement of ornamental plants could increase the geographic distribution of HLFPV. This represents the first report of HLFPV in the western United States. Accepted for publication 22 November 2004. White fir dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium abietinum Engelm. ex Munz f. sp. concoloris Hawksw. & Wiens) is a serious and common pathogen of white fir (Abies concolor (Gord. & Glend.) Hildebr.), grand fir (A. grandis (Dougl. ex D. Don) Lindl.), and Low's fir (A. lowiana (Gord.) A. Murr.) in the western United States (1). In August 2002, this dwarf mistletoe was observed parasitizing mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana (Bong.) Carr.) growing among severely infected grand fir near the trailhead to Cabot Lake in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area, Oregon at 44°34′27″N, 121°43′43″W, elevation 1,340 m. Only 2 of 27 mountain hemlocks observed in this area were infected. One tree had four infections, and one tree had two infections. Several fully developed male plants were found on one of the infected branches of mountain hemlock and were morphologically similar to those growing on the nearby grand fir. Other dwarf mistletoes that commonly parasitize mountain hemlock (Arceuthobium tsugense subsp. mertensianae and Arceuthobium laricis) were not observed in the area. In addition, white fir dwarf mistletoe can be distinguished from these mistletoes by its larger, yellowish shoots (1). Specimens of the mistletoe from mountain hemlock have been deposited in the Deaver Herbarium, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. Wild garlic (Allium vineale) is a bulbous perennial weed that was introduced from Europe and is now established throughout the eastern and much of the western United States. In 2001, wild garlic plants growing in Monterey County, CA were infected with a rust fungus. Uredinia and telia were present on leaves, resulting in small (2 to 5 mm long) lesions; however, leaf dieback and other symptoms were not observed. The orange urediniospores were spherical to ellipsoidal, echinulate, and mea-sured 26 to 30 × 25 to 28 μm. Telia were black in mass and divided into locules by fused paraphyses. Teliospores were located within the locules and were brown, smooth-walled, two-celled, and measured 40 to 50 × 17 to 20 μm. Teliospore pedicels were hyaline, usually fractured, and measured 3 to 15 μm. One-celled mesospores were not observed. Based on these morphological characteristics, the pathogen was identified as Puccinia allii (1,2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of rust caused by P. allii on wild garlic in California. Because of this finding, an experiment was designed to determine whether wild garlic could be a source of rust inoculum for commercial allium crops. Wild garlic bulbs were planted in 4-in. pots (10 cm square) and grown in a greenhouse. At the 4- to 5-leaf stage the plants were transplanted in a garlic (Allium sativum) cultivar trial that had been inoculated with an isolate of P. allii from garlic. When plants were evaluated 2 months later, uredinia and telia were observed on the wild garlic plants, and the fungus was confirmed to be P. allii. Wild garlic, therefore, could be a source of overwintered inocula for the rust disease that occurs on commercial garlic and onion (A. cepa) in California (2). References: (1) D. M. Jennings et al. A survey of 238 golf courses in 10 states of the western United States found root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) in 60% of the putting greens sampled. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA, D2-D3 of 28S rRNA, internal transcribed spacer-rRNA, and mitochondrial DNA gene sequences were used to identify specimens from 110 golf courses. The most common species, Meloidogyne naasi, was found in 58 golf courses distributed from Southern California to Washington in the coastal or cooler areas of those states. In the warmer regions of the Southwest, M. marylandi was recovered from 38 golf courses and M. graminis from 11 golf courses. This constitutes the first report of M. marylandi in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah, and the first report of M. graminis in Arizona, Hawaii, and Nevada. Two golf courses in Washington were infested with M. minor, the first record of this nematode in the Western Hemisphere. Columbia root-knot nematode, M. chitwoodi, was found in a single golf course in California. Polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism of the intergenic region between the cytochrome oxidase and 16S rRNA genes in the mitochondrial genome with restriction enzyme SspI was able to distinguish populations of M. graminis from M. marylandi, providing a fast and inexpensive method for future diagnosis of these nematodes from turf.

A few specimens of the ornate anthaspidellid demosponge, Archaeoscyphia pulchra (Bassler), have been collected from the Lower Ordovician Outram Formation or Skoki Formation, from a saddle at the head of South Rice Brook in northeastern British Columbia. This is the first report of the flanged-appearing annulate, steeply obconical sponge in western Canada, although it has been reported from the Mingan Islands of Quebec and was initially described from Nevada, in the western United States. The taxon has also been reported as other species of Archaeoscyphia from Ordovician rocks of Missouri and from the San Juan region of Argentina.

Magnolia liliiflora Desrousseaux in Lamarck (orthographic variant: M. liliiflora), a species thought to have originated in China (3), is used as a landscape plant in North America. In August 2002, Microsphaera magnifica U. Braun was collected from three plants of M. liliiflora in the Magnolia collection at the Washington Park Arboretum, University of Washington, Seattle. This report documents for the first time a powdery mildew disease of a Magnolia species in the Pacific Northwest, and the first finding of M. magnifica in the western United States. Downy mildew on camelina previously has been reported in Minnesota, where it was identified as Peronospora camelinae (now Hyaloperonospora camelinae), although no supporting evidence was given. In Montana, a downy mildew on camelina was identified as P. parasitica (now Hyaloperonospora parasitica). To our knowledge, this report marks the first time H. camelinae has been confirmed in the western USA. Accepted for publication 23 July 2009. Published 10 September 2009.

Coherence of place often exists alongside irregularities in time in cycles, and chapter three turns to cycles linked by temporal markers. Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles (1950) follows a linear chronology and describes the exploration, conquest, and repopulation of Mars by humans. Conversely, Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine (1984) jumps back and forth across time to narrate the lives of interconnected families in the western United States. Bradbury’s cycle invokes a confluence of historical forces—time as value-laden, work as a calling, and travel as necessitating standardized time—and contextualizes them in relation to anxieties about the space race. Erdrich’s cycle invokes broader, oppositional conceptions of time—as recursive and arbitrary and as causal and meaningful—to depict time as implicated in an entire system of measurement that made possible the destruction and exploitation of the Chippewa people. Both volumes understand the United States to be preoccupied with imperialist impulses. Even as they critique such projects, they also point to the tenacity with which individuals encounter these systems, and they do so by creating “interstitial temporalities,” which allow them to navigate time at the crossroads of language and culture.
