A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain, SSK2-2T, was isolated from the place where the ocean and a freshwater spring meet at Jeju island, South Korea. Strain SSK2-2T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SSK2-2T fell within the clade comprising the type strains of species of the genus Maribacter, joining the type strain of Maribacter sedimenticola with which it shared 99.4 % similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of other Maribacter species were 94.6–98.2 %. Strain SSK2-2T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0) as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain SSK2-2T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain SSK2-2T was 38.2 mol% and mean levels of DNA–DNA relatedness with the type strains of four phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 11–24 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain SSK2-2T is separate from other Maribacter species. On the basis of the data presented, strain SSK2-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter confluentis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SSK2-2T ( = KCTC 42604T = CECT 8869T).

Strain SSK3-2T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Neighbour-joining, maximum-likelihood and maximum-parsimony phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SSK3-2T clustered with the type strain of Primorskyibacter sedentarius, with which it exhibited 97.3 % sequence similarity. Strain SSK3-2T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acid. The major polar lipids detected in strain SSK3-2T were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified lipid and one unidentified aminolipid. The DNA G+C content of strain SSK3-2T was 60.6 mol% and its mean DNA–DNA relatedness value with P. sedentarius JCM 16874T was 19 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain SSK3-2T is separated from P. sedentarius. On the basis of the data presented, strain SSK3-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Primorskyibacter, for which the name Primorskyibacter insulae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SSK3-2T ( = KCTC 42602T = CECT 8871T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain 06182M-1T, was isolated from a mangrove soil sample collected from Chiayi County in Taiwan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed levels of similarity of 97.0–98.8 % to the type strains of recognized species of the genus Isoptericola. Chemotaxonomic data also supported the placement of strain 06182M-1T within the genus Isoptericola. However, the low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between the novel strain and the type strains of recognized species of the genus Isoptericola, in combination with differential phenotypic data, demonstrate that strain 06182M-1T represents a novel species of the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola chiayiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 06182M-1T ( = BCRC 16888T  = KCTC 19740T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, J22T, was isolated from black sand collected from Soesoggak, Jeju Island, Korea. Growth of strain J22T was observed in R2A medium at temperatures between 10 and 42 °C (optimum 30 °C), between pH 6.5 and 10.5 (optimum pH 7.5) and at a NaCl concentration between 0 and 4 % (w/v) (optimum 0–1 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain J22T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas, with high sequence similarities of >97 % to the sequence of the type strains Brevundimonas alba CB88T, Brevundimonas lenta DS-18T, Brevundimonas variabilis CB17T, Mycoplana bullata TK0051T, Brevundimonas kwangchunensis KSL-102T, Brevundimonas intermedia CB63T, Brevundimonas subvibrioides CB81T and Brevundimonas bacteroides CB7T. Strain J22T exhibited DNA–DNA relatedness values of less than 22.2 % with the phylogenetically related species of the genus Brevundimonas. The DNA G+C content of strain J22T was 66.3 mol%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω9c; C12 : 0 3-OH was present, which chemotaxonomically characterizes the members of the genus Brevundimonas. Phylogenetic, genomic and biochemical characteristics served to differentiate this isolate from recognized members of the genus Brevundimonas. Strain J22T (=KCTC 22177T=JCM 15911T) should be classified as a novel species in the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas basaltis sp. nov. is proposed.

Four Gram-stain-positive, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, motile, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria, designated strains FeL05T, FeL11, Fek19 and Fek21, were isolated from seeds of hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L. Jinyou 611), and their taxonomic positions were determined using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the four strains were members of the genus Paenibacillus. They showed 95.4 % sequence similarity or less with strains of other Paenibacillus species. The G+C content of strain FeL05T was found to be 53.3 mol%. Its predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (61.7 %), C16 : 0 (10.9 %), iso-C16 : 0 (7.0 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (6.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (5.2 %). On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain FeL05T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus hunanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain FeL05T (=ACCC 10718T =CGMCC 1.8907T =DSM 22170T).

A Gram-variable, motile, endospore-forming, slightly halophilic bacterial strain, DSW-10T, was isolated from Dokdo, an island located at the edge of the East Sea, Korea, and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. This isolate grew optimally at 37 °C and in the presence of 4–5 % NaCl. Strain DSW-10T had cell-wall peptidoglycan based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone, and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 36·7 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DSW-10T is phylogenetically affiliated to the genus Virgibacillus, and exhibited sequence similarity of 95·3–98·7 % to the type strains of Virgibacillus species. DNA–DNA relatedness levels between strain DSW-10T and the type strains of some phylogenetically related Virgibacillus species were in the range 8·4–17·5 %. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain DSW-10T (=KCTC 3933T=DSM 16826T) was classified as the type strain of a novel Virgibacillus species, for which the name Virgibacillus dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming actinobacterial strain, designated strain TL1T, was isolated from pig manure in Wuhan, China. The cell wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c. The genomic DNA G+C content was 70.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TL1T was most closely related to the type strains of Knoellia sinensis (98.5 %), Knoellia subterranea (98.2 %) and Knoellia aerolata (96.9 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain TL1T with the type strains of K. sinensis and K. subterranea were 27.3 and 34.0 %, respectively. Comparison of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics among strain TL1T and related organisms revealed that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Knoellia, for which the name Knoellia flava sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is TL1T ( = CGMCC 1.10749T = KCTC 19810T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain OU-40T, was isolated from farm soil collected from the Hyderabad region of Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of species of the genus Streptomyces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain OU-40T belonged to the genus Streptomyces, and was related most closely to Streptomyces pactum NBRC 13433T (99.0 % sequence similarity), Streptomyces olivaceus NBRC 12805T (99.0 %) and Streptomyces parvulus NBRC 13193T (98.8 %). Strain OU-40T could be distinguished from the type strains of its closest phylogenetic relatives based on levels of DNA–DNA relatedness and comparison of morphological and phenotypic data. It is therefore concluded that strain OU-40T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces hyderabadensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is OU-40T (=CCTCC AA 209024T =PCM 2692T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, strictly aerobic strain with gliding motility, designated JAMB N27T, was isolated from sediment adjacent to sperm whale carcasses off Kagoshima, Japan, at a depth of 219 m. Strain JAMB N27T contained MK-6 as the major isoprenoid quinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1, C16 : 1 and iso-C17 : 1 as the predominant fatty acids. Casein, chitin, gelatin and starch were degraded. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JAMB N27T represented a separate lineage within the genus Aquimarina. The DNA G+C content of strain JAMB N27T was 33.1 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain JAMB N27T and type strains of species of the genus Aquimarina were significantly lower than the cut-off value accepted for the definition of a novel species. Therefore, strain JAMB N27T represents a novel species, for which the name Aquimarina macrocephali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JAMB N27T (=JCM 15542T=NCIMB 14508T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated and coccoid, ovoid or rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated AH-M8T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment collected from Aphae Island in the south-western sea, South Korea. Strain AH-M8T grew optimally at 35 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0–3.0  % (w/v) NaCl. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain AH-M8T belonged to the genus Sphingomicrobium, clustering with the type strain of Sphingomicrobium astaxanthinifaciens, with which it shared 99.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of other species of the genus Sphingomicrobium were 95.4–96.0  %. Strain AH-M8T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain AH-M8T were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid and one unidentified glycolipid. The major polyamine is triamine sym-homospermidine. The DNA G+C content of strain AH-M8T was 66.7 mol% and its mean DNA–DNA relatedness value with S. astaxanthinifaciens JCM 18551T was 21  %. The differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain AH-M8T is separated from other species of the genus Sphingomicrobium. On the basis of the data presented, strain AH-M8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Sphingomicrobium, for which the name Sphingomicrobium aestuariivivum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AH-M8T ( = KCTC 42286T = NBRC 110678T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain FJAT-18043T, was isolated from a soil sample of a potato field in Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China. Cells were rods that were catalase-positive and motile by peritrichous flagella. The strain grew at 20–45 °C (optimum 35 °C), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum pH 9) and with 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain FJAT-18043T belonged to the genus Bacillus and exhibited similarities of 97.7, 97.6, 97.2 and 97.2 % with Bacillus eiseniae A1-2T, Bacillus horneckiae DSM 23495T, Bacillus gottheilii WCC 4585T and Bacillus purgationiresistens DS22T, respectively. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FJAT-18043T and B. eiseniae A1-2 T was lower than 70 % (36.1 %). The menaquinone was identified as MK-7 and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The major fatty acids detected were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 48.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicated that isolate FJAT-18043T represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus solani sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-18043T ( = DSM 29501T = CCTCC AB 2014277T).
