The actinobacterial strain YIM 70185T was isolated from a saline soil sample collected from Qinghai province, north-west China, and subjected to a taxonomic investigation. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed 93.5–96.4 % similarity to members of related genera in the family Micrococcaceae. In the phylogenetic dendrogram based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain YIM 70185T formed a separate clade next to the genera Micrococcus and Citricoccus within the family Micrococcaceae. The peptidoglycan type was A4α, l-lys–l-ala–l-Glu. Cell-wall sugars contained glucose and tyvelose. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, an unknown phospholipid and an unknown glycolipid. The menaquinones were MK-9, MK-10 and MK-8 (molar ratio 5 : 2 : 1). The major fatty acids were ai-C15 : 0 and i-C15 : 0 and the DNA G+C content was 66.5 mol%. These chemotaxonomic profiles supported the assignment of strain YIM 70185T to a novel genus within the family Micrococcaceae. The name Zhihengliuella halotolerans gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Zhihengliuella halotolerans is YIM 70185T (=DSM 17364T=KCTC 19085T).

A novel coccoid, halotolerant actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 70085T, was isolated from a soil sample that was collected in Xinjiang Province, China, and characterized by using a polyphasic approach. Optimum growth temperature was 28 °C and growth occurred optimally in culture media that contained 10 % KCl. The peptidoglycan type was A4α, l-lys–gly–l-Glu. Whole-cell sugars consisted of xylose, mannose and galactose. Phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown phospholipid, one unknown glycolipid and traces of phosphatidylinositol. Menaquinones were MK-8 (83 %), MK-7 (12 %) and MK-9 (15 %). Predominant fatty acids were i-C15 : 0 (44·29 %), ai-C15 : 0 (35·60 %) and ai-C17 : 0 (9·74 %). The DNA G+C content was 53·5 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 70085T occupies a branch that is distinct from, although very close to, the family Micrococcaceae in the suborder Micrococcineae. Based on its phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic position (as determined by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis) and 16S rDNA signature nucleotide data, it is concluded that the isolate represents a novel member of the suborder Micrococcineae, for which the name Yania halotolerans gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 70085T (=CCTCC AA001023T=DSM 15476T).

A novel filamentous actinomycete strain, designated TRM 46004T, was isolated from sediment of Aiding Lake in Tulufan Basin (42° 64′ N 89° 26′ E), north-west China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. The isolate formed abundant aerial mycelium with few branches and vegetative mycelium, occasionally twisted and coiled; spherical sporangia containing one to several spherical spores developed at the ends of short sporangiophores on aerial mycelium. The G+C content of the DNA was 65.2 mol%. The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and xylose, galactose and ribose as the major whole-cell sugars. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H10). The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TRM 46004T formed a distinct lineage within the family Pseudonocardiaceae and showed 91.7–96.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with members of the family Pseudonocardiaceae . On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel genus and species, Longimycelium tulufanense gen. nov., sp. nov., are proposed. The type strain of Longimycelium tulufanense is TRM 46004T ( = CGMCC 4.5737T = NBRC 107726T).

A Gram-positive, non-motile, coccoid- to rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain YM18-15T, was isolated from sea sand and studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Strain YM18-15T grew under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The cell-wall peptidoglycan type was A4β and ornithine was the diagnostic diamino acid. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown phospholipid, MK-8(H4) was the major menaquinone and the predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 74.2 mol%. High 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (96.3–97.3 %) were found with the sequences of the type strains of the three genera of the family Beutenbergiaceae. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YM18-15T formed a clade with Serinibacter salmoneus, Salana multivorans and Beutenbergia cavernae. Strain YM18-15T differed from these three type strains in chemotaxonomic characteristics and in 16S rRNA gene signature nucleotides. Based on genetic and chemotaxonomic evidence, it is suggested that strain YM18-15T represents a novel species of a new genus within the family Beutenbergiaceae, for which the name Miniimonas arenae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is YM18-15T (=NBRC 106267T=KCTC 19750T=MBIC 08348T).

A bacterial strain, DC-186T, isolated from home-made compost, was characterized for its phenotypic and phylogenetic properties. The isolate was a Gram-negative rod that was able to grow at 15–36 °C and pH 5.5–8.0. Strain DC-186T was positive in tests for catalase, oxidase and β-galactosidase activities and aesculin hydrolysis. The predominant fatty acids were the summed feature C16 : 1/iso-C15 : 0 2-OH (42 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (26 %), the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 42 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and phenetic characterization indicated that this organism belongs to the phylum Bacteroidetes and revealed its affiliation to the family Sphingobacteriaceae. Of recognized taxa, strain DC-186T was most closely related to Sphingobacterium daejeonense (90 % sequence similarity) based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with other recognized taxa and the identification of distinctive phenetic features for this isolate support the definition of a new genus within the family Sphingobacteriaceae. The name Pseudosphingobacterium domesticum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed, with strain DC-186T (=CCUG 54353T=LMG 23837T) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium, designated MJ17T, was isolated from sludge at the Daejeon sewage disposal plant in South Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain MJ17T belonged to the genus Paracoccus in the family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain MJ17T and type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus were 94.1–97.4 %. The highest similarities were between strain MJ17T and Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11T, Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588T and Paracoccus alcaliphilus JCM 7364T (97.4, 97.2 and 96.3 %, respectively). Strain MJ17T exhibited <22 % DNA–DNA relatedness with P. homiensis KACC 11518T and P. zeaxanthinifaciens JCM 21774T. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 58.7 mol%. Strain MJ17T contained ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids were C18 : 0 (11.3 %), C16 : 0 (10.2 %) and summed feature 7 (containing one or more of C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω9c and C18 : 1ω12t; 54.3 %). Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules are formed. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain MJ17T should be classified in a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MJ17T ( = KCTC 22480T  = JCM 16385T  = KEMB 9004-001T).

A hitherto unknown anaerobic bacillus isolated from sinus pus in a young child (strain AIP 354.02T) was characterized by using phenotypic and genotypic methods. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that this strain was phylogenetically affiliated with several sequences of cloned 16S rRNA gene inserts previously deposited in the public databases. According to their 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, these uncultivated bacteria, together with strain AIP 354.02T, formed a separate subgroup belonging to the family ‘Lachnospiraceae’ within the phylum Firmicutes. Oribacterium gen. nov. is proposed for this group of organisms and Oribacterium sinus gen. nov. sp. nov. for strain AIP 354.02T (=CIP 107991T=CCUG 48084T).

A motile, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain JS11-7T, was isolated from forest soil from Halla Mountain, Jeju Island, Korea. It grew optimally at 28 °C, pH 6–7 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JS11-7T belongs to the family Neisseriaceae, with Silvimonas terrae as its closest relative (95.0 % similarity). It contained Q-8 as the predominant quinone and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 62 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain JS11-7T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Andreprevotia chitinilytica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type species is Andreprevotia chitinilytica and the type strain is JS11-7T (=KACC 11608T=DSM 18519T).

A novel, moderately halophilic, Gram-positive coccus, designated strain S2R53-5T, was isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism was strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-sporulating and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Strain S2R53-5T grew in the presence of 0.5–15 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.5–11.0, with optimum growth at 5 % (w/v) NaCl and pH 7.0. The temperature range for growth was 20.0–30.0 °C, with an optimum temperature of 30 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain S2R53-5T belongs to the family Staphylococcaceae and was most closely related to Salinicoccus roseus DSM 5351T (96.8 % gene sequence similarity), Salinicoccus hispanicus DSM 5352T (96.1 %), Salinicoccus alkaliphilus T8T (95.2 %) and Jeotgalicoccus halotolerans YKJ-101T (95.1 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.0 mol%, which is in the range of 46–51 mol% that is characteristic for the genus Salinicoccus. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain S2R53-5T and S. roseus DSM 5351T, S. hispanicus DSM 5352T and S. alkaliphilus KCTC 13928T were 32.2, 15.4 and 4.6 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (major menaquinone, MK-6; major fatty acids, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0; cell-wall murein type, Lys and Gly) and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis supported the affiliation of strain S2R53-5T with the genus Salinicoccus. The combined evidence from the low DNA–DNA relatedness, physiological, biochemical and other genotypic data indicate that strain S2R53-5T clearly represents a novel species of the genus Salinicoccus, for which the name Salinicoccus jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S2R53-5T (=KCTC 13030T=LMG 23640T).

A marine bacterium, DOKDO 007T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of the marine alga Ecklonia kurome collected from Dokdo Island, Korea, in October 2004. The strain produced orange-coloured colonies on marine agar 2216. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the novel isolate belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed relatively high sequence similarities with members of the genus Muricauda (92.0–94.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the novel isolate shared a lineage with members of the genera Muricauda and Costertonia. Cells were aerobic, Gram-negative rods producing non-diffusible carotenoid pigments. In contrast to all other members of the family Flavobacteriaceae, cells of DOKDO 007T were motile by means of a polar flagellum. Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 3.5–4 % (w/v) sea salts (corresponding to 2.7–3.1 % NaCl), at pH 8 and at temperatures of 26–29 °C. The novel strain required Ca2+ ions in addition to NaCl for growth. The dominant fatty acids were iso-15 : 0, iso-15 : 1ω10c and 10-methyl-16 : 0. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. The DNA G+C content was 56.3 mol%, an unusually high value for members of the family Flavobacteriaceae. On the basis of these polyphasic taxonomic data, strain DOKDO 007T should be classified as representing a new genus and novel species in the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Flagellimonas eckloniae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DOKDO 007T (=KCCM 42307T=JCM 13831T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, rod-shaped, yellow actinobacterium, designated MNA2T, was isolated from a hexachlorocyclohexane-contaminated soil in North India. Strain MNA2T showed 95 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Microbacterium halotolerans YIM 70130T. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain MNA2T belonged to a clade represented by the genus Microbacterium of the family Microbacteriaceae. Strain MNA2T contained anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 as the predominant fatty acids and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unknown polar lipids. The menaquinones were MK-12, MK-11, MK-13 and MK-10, in an approximate molar ratio of 45 : 40 : 13 : 3, respectively. The DNA G+C content was 65.3 mol%. The peptidoglycan was of the B type of cross-linkage with ornithine as the diagnostic diamino acid. The results of the phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analysis indicate that strain MNA2T belongs to a previously unrecognized species of the genus Microbacterium, for which the name Microbacterium lindanitolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MNA2T (=DSM 22422T =CCM 7585T).
