In this paper, we discuss the role of material parameters and external field effects on a thin film topological insulator(TI) in the context of quantum phase transition (QPT). First, we consider an in-plane tilted magnetic field and determine the band structure of the surface states as a function of the tilt angle. We show that the presence of either a hybridization term or hexagonal warping or a combination of both leads to a semi-metal to insulator phase transition which is facilitated by their [Formula: see text] symmetry breaking character. We then note that while the introduction of an electric field does not allow for this QPT since it does not break [Formula: see text] symmetry, it can be used in conjunction with a tunneling element to reach a phase transition efficiently. The corresponding critical point is then nontrivially dependent on the electric field, which is pointed out here. Then, we demonstrate that including a hexagonal warping term leads to an immediate [Formula: see text] symmetry violating QPT.

We applied a perpendicular electric field and an in-plane magnetic field to not only tune the Dirac gap of a SnTe(001) thin film and find the phase transition but also to investigate their effects on the group velocity of both massless and massive surface Dirac fermions.

The magnetic field hz of a moving Pearl vortex in a superconducting thin-film in (x,y) plane is studied with the help of the time-dependent London equation. It is found that for a vortex at the origin moving in +x direction, hz(x,y) is suppressed in front of the vortex, x>0, and enhanced behind (x<0). The distribution asymmetry is proportional to the velocity and to the conductivity of normal quasiparticles. The vortex self-energy and the interaction of two moving vortices are evaluated.

In the probe limit, we study the holographic p-wave phase transition in the Gauss–Bonnet gravity via numerical and analytical methods. Concretely, we study the influences of the external magnetic field on the Maxwell complex vector model in the five-dimensional Gauss–Bonnet–AdS black hole and soliton backgrounds, respectively. For the two backgrounds, the results show that the magnetic field enhances the superconductor phase transition in the case of the lowest Landau level, while the increasing Gauss–Bonnet parameter always hinders the vector condensate. Moreover, the Maxwell complex vector model is a generalization of the SU(2) Yang–Mills model all the time. In addition, the analytical results backup the numerical results. Furthermore, this model might provide a holographic realization for the QCD vacuum instability.

Theoretically, with the aid of a soliton model, the evolution of a new-phase nucleus near the first-order spin-reorientation phase transition in magnets has been investigated in an external magnetic field. The influence of an external field and one-dimensional defects of magnetic anisotropy on the dynamics of such nucleus has been demonstrated. The conditions for the localization of the new-phase nucleus in the region of the magnetic anisotropy defect and for its escape from the defect have been determined. The values of the critical fields which bring about the sample magnetization reversal have been identified and estimated.
