ABSTRACTMagnetic properties have been investigated for several rare-earth based, polycrystalline samples of high Tc superconductive “123” compounds with magnetic onset temperatures between 90 and 95 K. Analysis of the susceptibility × of samples based on Gd, Ho, and Dy indicates that the superconductive and magnetic properties are independent of one another to a substantial degree. Studies of the critical current density Jc are reported.

ABSTRACTThe structural, magnetic and electrical properties of EuBa2Cu3O7-δ have been investigated both for bulk ceramics and screen printed thick films. The bulk ceramic reaches zero resistance at 92 K, and has large intragranular critical current density inferred from magnetization loops; the directly measured critical current density is substantially lower because of the weak links (Josephson junctions) between grains. Screen printed thick films on strontium titanate have poor magnetic and resistive transitions with evidence for two phases. High temperature oxygen anneals produce a bulk ceramic with significantly enhanced magnetic properties.

Authors perform mathematical modeling of magnetic properties, such as current distribution, intrinsic magnetic field and magnetization of a number of axisymmetric superconductors of the second kind, for example, of a sphere with the dependence of the critical current density on the local magnetic field in the Kim model. The simulation is based on equation that is integral with respect to coordinate and differential with respect to time. The equation describes time evolution of the critical current density and is solved numerically for a uniformly varying external magnetic field. The shape of the sample is set using a distorted rectangular irregular mesh with compaction to the edges of the sample. While solving the equation of current motion, the total magnetic field iscalculated at the points of the superconductor to calculate the value of the critical current density. In the article, the obtained solutions are used to visualize the current distribution in the volume of a superconductor and to construct magnetization hysteresis loops. Also, thanks to the calculations of the magnetic field in the center of the sample, the dependencies of the total penetration field for samples with different aspect ratios are obtained.

We prepared polycrystalline samples of YBa 2 Cu 2( Cu 1-x M x) O 6+w, where M (=Sc, Cr, V, Fe, Al and Au) substitutes copper in the chain site, and measured their transport and magnetic properties. The substitution level x was 0.05 and 0.10 for each substituent. We determined the solubility of the different metals and the dependence of Tc, irreversibility lines and critical current density jc on M and x. An improvement of jc by a factor larger than 2 was obtained in the Fe-, Al-, Cr- and V- substituted materials. No improvement of the irreversibility line was obtained for any substituent.

The changes of the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.5+δ properties and composition caused by dc and ac treatments at 77 K have been studied. Considerable changes of the cations and oxygen concentrations due to dc effect have been observed for the first time. Elements have been found to migrate both along the sample length according to the electrode polarity and between the sample bulk and the surface. Small impurities such as S, Si, K and Cl have been observed to migrate along the sample length as well. The composition variations are accompanied by changes of magnetic properties and intragrain critical current density. Some aspects of HTSC degradation under these conditions are discussed.
