Schleiermacher as Political ActivistMuch of the material for this chapter is taken from my chapter, “Schleiermacher and the State,” in The Cambridge Companion to Schleiermacher (ed. Jacqueline Mariña; Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005), pp. 269–85. The definitive account of Schleiermacher’s political thought and activity is Matthias Wolfes’s Öffentlichkeit und Bürgergesellschaft. Friedrich Schleiermachers politische Wirksamkeit (2 vols; Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2004). As I was preparing this chapter Miriam Rose’s book Schleiermachers Staatslehre appeared (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2011). She cites favorably my focus on placing Schleiermacher’s political thought in the context of his biography and the political events of his day. Her focus is more on placing Schleiermacher in contemporaneous debates about political philosophy.
