The objective of this study was to assess the dormancy and the enzymatic activity of seeds of rice cultivars during storage in different environments. After harvesting, the seeds of two rice cultivars (BRS Ourominas and BRSMG Caravera) were dried in the sun, to reach a moisture content around 13%. Then, they were packed in paper and stored in four environments: 5 ± 2 ºC / 70 ± 5% RH, 12 ± 2 ºC / 70 ± 5% RH, 18 ± 2 ºC / 65 ± 5% RH and in a natural condition. Germination and enzymatic activity were assessed at the beginning and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of storage. The experiment was conducted in split subplots in a completely randomized design with three replications. The dormancy of seeds stored in the natural environment was exceeded in a shorter time than the dormancy of seeds stored in cold. Catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activity increased during the storage period, the most obviously in storage in natural environment to cultivate BRSMG Caravera. The activity of the enzyme α-amylase decreased during the storage period.

SummaryStorage experiments were performed at 4°, 25° and 37° C with platelet-rich plasma under sterile conditions. In some experiments also the effect of storing platelets at 4° C in whole blood was investigated. Before, during and after three days of storage, the platelets were tested at 37° C for their serotonin uptake and response to hypotonic shock. In addition some glycolytic intermediates were determined.A fair correlation was noticed between the serotonin uptake and hypotonic shock experiments. Both parameters were best maintained at 25° C. Also platelet counting, performed after the storage period, indicated 25° C as the best storage temperature. Determination of glycolytic intermediates did not justify any conclusion regarding the optimal storage temperature. Of the various anticoagulants studied, ACD and heparin gave the best results as to the serotonin uptake and hypotonic shock response, either with fresh or stored platelets. The use of EDTA resulted in the lowest activity, especially after storage. The results of these storage experiments in vitro, correspond well with those in vivo reported in the literature.

This paper intends to verify the extent and effectiveness of the transforming appropriation of the Derridean concept of ‘differance’ by Stiegler with respect to the problems that, according to Stiegler, make this creative critical operation necessary; in particular with respect to the most recent question concerning the possibility of thinking about and putting into practice a ‘neganthropological différance’ capable of facing the ecological crisis that today seems to threaten the very existence of life on earth. The paper goes back to Technics and Time 1. to analyze the distinction between ‘vital difference’ and ‘noetic difference’ that constitutes the condition of possibility of the ‘neganthropological différance.’ In this perspective, the distinction proposed by Stiegler seems to re-propose the hierarchically oriented oppositional structure that characterizes metaphysical thought and in particular the opposition between man and animal, attributing to the human being the ability to free himself from the constraints of his biological-natural condition. Finally, the paper attempts to account for the repercussions of this approach on the very possibility of an effective response to the ecological crisis, concluding with a provocation regarding the role that theory can and must play with regard to such an urgent and far-reaching problem.

The present article investigates the effect of sodium lactate on microbiological, physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of lightly salted Pacific herring ( Clupea pallasii ) and Baltic herring ( Clupea harengus membras ) during refrigerated storage 5 ± 0.3°C. There have been analyzed different processing methods of lightly salted samples of Pacific and Baltic herring: control (without sodium lactate), and experiment (3% sodium lactate), both in vacuum packaging and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP - 40% CO2/60% N2). For vacuum and MAP there were used bags with low oxygen permeability (3 cm3/m2/day). It was found that 3% sodium lactate keeps firmness of the texture of salted fish muscle and reduces the release of water into the package during storage. Adding 3% sodium lactate reduces the value of the water activity in lightly salted Pacific and Baltic herring by 0.01-0,012 units. The lowest pH (0.02 units) was registered in samples without sodium lactate packed in MAP. Organoleptic signs of spoilage in fish without sodium lactate appeared much earlier, and using 3% sodium lactate both in vacuum and in MAP helped protect and improve organoleptic characteristics of the product during storage. Total biological semination of experimental samples packed in MAP kept at the very low level during the whole storage period, i.e. combined effect of using 3% sodium lactate and MAP inhibited microbial growth. This combination allows to reduce twice the rate of accumulation nitrogen in terminal amino-groups and to increase 1.5-2 times storage life of lightly salted Pacific and Baltic herring, compared to their storage life in vacuum packaging without sodium lactate. The results obtained allow us to recommend using sodium lactate in production of lightly salted fish in oxygen-free packaging, especially in modified atmosphere packaging (40% CO2/60% N2).

The aim of this study is to use of karkede (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) byproduct as raw material to make ketchup instead of tomato. Ketchup is making of various pulps, but the best type made from tomatoes. Roselle having adequate amounts of macro and micro elements, and it is rich in source of anthocyanine. The ketchup made from pulped of waste of soaked karkede, and homogenized with starch, salt, sugar, ginger (Zingiber officinale), kusbara (Coriandrum sativum) and gum Arabic. Then processed and filled in glass bottles and stored at two different temperatures, ambient and refrigeration. The total solids, total soluble solids, pH, ash, total titratable acidity and vitamin C of ketchup were determined. As well as, total sugars, reducing sugars, colour density, and sodium chloride percentage were evaluated. The sensory quality of developed product was determined immediately and after processing, which included colour, taste, odour, consistency and overall acceptability. The suitability during storage included microbial growth, physico-chemical properties and sensory quality. The karkede ketchup was found free of contaminants throughout storage period at both storage temperatures. Physico-chemical properties were found to be significantly differences at p?0.05 level during storage. There were no differences between karkade ketchup and market tomato ketchup concerning odour, taste, odour, consistency and overall acceptability. These results are encouraging for use of roselle cycle as a raw material to make acceptable karkade ketchup.

The study was conducted to assess the effect of different waxing materials on the quality attributes of tomato fruits. A 2 x8 factorial experiment layout in complete randomized design with 16 treatment combinations and 3 replication was adopted. The materials that were used for the experiment are two (2) varieties of tomatoes (Pectomech and Power Rano) and seven(7) waxing material (shea butter, cassava starch, beeswax, and a combination of shea butter + cassava starch, shea butter + beeswax, cassava starch + beeswax, shea butter + cassava starch + beeswax) and a control. Results from the experiment indicated that all waxing treatments delayed the development of weight loss, firmness, pH, total soluble solids, and total titrable acidity. The results also suggested that edible wax coatings delayed the ripening process and colour development of tomato fruits during the storage period and extended the shelf life. However Beewax treatment and its combinations performed better than the other treatments. It was therefore recommended that locally produced wax such as Beewax, Shea butter, Cassava Starch treatments and their combinations could be a good technology for preserving the quality and extending the shelf life of fresh tomato fruit as well as maintaining the physical and chemical properties.

The harvest of sugar beet leads to root tip breakage and surface damage through mechanical impacts, which increase storage losses. For the determination of textural properties of sugar beet roots with a texture analyzer a reliable method description is missing. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of washing, soil tare, storage period from washing until measurement, sample distribution and number of roots on puncture and compression measurements. For this purpose, in 2017 comprehensive tests were conducted with sugar beet roots grown in a greenhouse. In a second step these tests were carried out with different Beta varieties from a field trial, and in addition, a flexural test was included. Results show that the storage period after washing and the sample distribution had an influence on the puncture and compression strength. It is suggested to wash the roots by hand before the measurement and to determine the strength no later than 48 h after washing. For reliable and comparable results a radial distribution of measurement points around the widest circumference of the root is recommended for the puncture test. The sample position of the compression test had an influence on the compressive strength and therefore, needs to be clearly defined. For the puncture and the compression test it was possible to achieve stable results with a small sample size, but with increasing heterogeneity of the plant stand a higher number of roots is required. The flexural test showed a high variability and is, therefore, not recommended for the analysis of sugar beet textural properties.

Background: The extrusion cooking is the most widely used process so the development and consumption of extruded snack products having health and nutritious benefits would help increase the health status of the population. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of storage days on physical, microbial activity and sensory characteristics of extruded snacks and kinetics of extruded snacks. Methods: Extruded snacks were produced by extrusion cooking at optimized conditions of temperature, moisture and screw speed of 110°C, 12% (db) and 200 rpm. The products were packed in lowdensity polyethylene (LDPE) and laminated pouches (LP) and were stored at an accelerated temperature condition of 40 ± 2°C. The storage stability in terms of quality parameters such as moisture, hardness, bulk density, color, lateral expansion, sensory characteristics and total plate count was investigated. Results: An increase (p≤0.05) in the value of moisture, bulk density, a*, and total plate count was observed during the storage period, whereas hardness, L*, b*, ΔE and sensory characteristics showed significant (p≤0.05) decreased order with storage period. No significant effect on the lateral expansion of the extruded product was observed. A significant decrease in total carbohydrate, fat and protein content was found during the storage period. The average sensory score and microbial analysis suggested that extruded snacks packed in LDPE pouches can only be acceptable up to the 60th day and extruded snacks packed in LP can be acceptable to more than 90th day. The kinetics of color and hardness suggest first order kinetics. Conclusion: Overall investigation suggested that extruded snacks were more stable in the LP as compared to LDPE pouches.
