A CFD-Based Parametric Study on Modification of Discrete Sister Holes Location for the Film Cooling Flow

A numerical study on the effects of sister holes locations on film cooling performance is presented. This includes the change of the location of the individual discrete sister holes in the streamwise and spanwise directions, where each one of these directions includes 9 different locations, The simulations are performed using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes analysis with the realizable k–ε model combined with the standard wall function. The variation of the sister holes in the streamwise direction provides similar film cooling performance as the base case for both blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1. On the other hand, the spanwise variation of the sister holes’ location has a more prominent effect on the effectiveness. In some cases, as a result of the anti-vortices generated from the sister holes and the repositioning of the sister holes in the spanwise direction, the jet lift-off effect notably decreases and more volume of coolant is distributed in the spanwise direction.

A numerical investigation of the film cooling performance from novel sister shaped single-holes (SSSH) is presented in this paper and the obtained results are compared with a single cylindrical hole, a forward diffused shaped hole, as well as discrete sister holes. Three types of the novel sister shaped single-hole schemes namely downstream, upstream and up/downstream SSSH, are designed based on merging the discrete sister holes to the primary hole in order to reduce the jet lift-off effect and increase the lateral spreading of the coolant on the blade surface as well as a reduction in the amount of coolant in comparison with discrete sister holes. The simulations are performed using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes analysis with the realizable k–ε model combined with the standard wall function. The upstream SSSH demonstrates similar film cooling performance to that of the forward diffused shaped hole for the low blowing ratio of 0.5. While it performs more efficiently at M = 1, where the centerline and laterally averaged effectiveness results improved by 70% and 17%, respectively. On the other hand, the downstream and up/downstream SSSH schemes show a considerable improvement in film cooling performance in terms of obtaining higher film cooling effectiveness and less jet lift-off effect as compared with the single cylindrical and forward diffused shaped holes for both blowing ratios of M = 0.5 and 1. For example, the laterally averaged effectiveness for the downstream SSSH configuration shows an improvement of approximately 57% and 110% on average as compared to the forward diffused shaped hole for blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1, respectively.

Film-cooling has been widely used as the important alternative to protect the turbine blade. Since the film-cooling hole geometry is one of the most influential parameters for film-cooling performance, various film-cooling hole schemes have been developed to increase cooling performance for the past few decades. In the present work, numerical analysis has been performed to investigate and to compare the film-cooling performance of various film-cooling hole schemes such as fan-shaped, crescent, louver, and dumbbell holes. For analyzes of the turbulent flow and film-cooling, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis has been performed with shear stress transport turbulence model. The validation of numerical results has been performed in comparison with experimental data. The flow characteristics and film-cooling performance for each hole shape have been investigated and evaluated in terms of local- and averaged film-cooling effectivenesses.

This study was accomplished in order to investigate the effects of cylindrical and row trenched cooling holes with alignment angle of 0 degree and 90 degree at blowing ratio, BR = 3.18 on the film cooling performance adjacent to the endwall surface of a combustor simulator. In this research a three dimensional representation of Pratt and Whitney gas turbine engine was simulated and analyzed with a commercial finite volume package FLUENT 6.2. The current study has been performed with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence model (RANS) on internal cooling passages. This combustor simulator combined the interaction of two rows of dilution jets, which were staggered in the stream wise direction and aligned in the span wise direction, with that of film cooling along the combustor liner walls. The findings of the study declared that with using the row trenched holes near the endwall surface, film cooling effectiveness is doubled compared to the cooling performance of baseline case.

Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effects of injection hole shapes and injection angle on the film cooling of turbine blade, four models having cylindrical and laterally-diffused holes were used. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with k – ε model was used to compute the film cooling coefficient on the turbine blade. A multi-block grid system was generated that was nearly orthogonal to the various surfaces. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was 7.1 × 104. The turbulence intensity kept at 5.0% for all inlets. The effect of coolant flow rates was studied for blowing ratios of 0.9, 1.3 and 1.6, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical body surface is visualized by infrared thermography (IRT) and compared with computational results. Results show that the effects of injection hole shape and injection angle increase as the blowing ratio increases. As lateral injection angle increases, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is more broadly distributed and the area protected by coolant increases. The mass flow rate of the coolant through the first-row holes is less than that through the second-row holes due to the pressure distribution around the cylinder surface.

The combustor simulator was designed to combine the interaction of two rows of dilution jets, which were staggered in the streamwise direction and aligned in the spanwise direction. As a result, the combustor with row trenched holes gave almost doubled cooling performance compared to the baseline case. In addition, the film cooling layer was increased at high blowing ratio, and thus it enhanced the cooling performance.

A concept for mitigating the adverse effects of jet vorticity and lift-off at high blowing ratios for turbine film cooling flows has been developed and studied at NASA Glenn Research Center. This “anti-vortex” film cooling concept proposes the addition of two branched holes from each primary hole in order to produce a vorticity counter to the detrimental kidney vortices from the main jet. These vortices typically entrain hot freestream gas and are associated with jet separation from the turbine blade surface. The anti-vortex design is unique in that it requires only easily machinable round holes, unlike shaped film cooling holes and other advanced concepts. The anti-vortex film cooling hole concept has been modeled computationally for a single row of 30 degree angled holes on a flat surface using the 3D Navier-Stokes solver Glenn-HT. A modification of the anti-vortex concept whereby the branched holes exit adjacent to the main hole has been studied computationally for blowing ratios of 1.0 and 2.0 and at density ratios of 1.0 and 2.0. This modified concept was selected because it has shown the most promise in recent experimental studies. The computational results show that the modified design improves the film cooling effectiveness relative to the round hole baseline and previous anti-vortex cases, in confirmation of the experimental studies.

A three-dimensional numerical study of a single droplet splashing vertically on a liquid film is presented. The numerical method is based on the finite volume method (FVM) of Navier–Stokes equations coupled with the volume of fluid (VOF) method, and the adaptive local mesh refinement technology is adopted. It enables the liquid–gas interface to be tracked more accurately, and to be less computationally expensive. The relationship between the diameter of the free rim, the height of the crown with different numbers of collision Weber, and the thickness of the liquid film is explored. The results indicate that the crown height increases as the Weber number increases, and the diameter of the crown rim is inversely proportional to the collision Weber number. It can also be concluded that the dimensionless height of the crown decreases with the increase in the thickness of the dimensionless liquid film, which has little effect on the diameter of the crown rim during its growth.

Vaned diffusers have been used successfully as efficient and compact dynamic pressure recovery devices in industrial centrifugal compressor stages. Typically such diffusers consist of a cascade of two-dimensional blades distributed circumferentially at close proximity to the impeller exit. In this paper three low-solidity diffuser blade geometries are numerically investigated. The first geometry employs variable stagger stacking of similar blade sections along the blade span. The second employs linearly inclined stacking to generate blade lean along the diffuser span. The third geometry employs the conventional two-dimensional low-solidity diffuser geometry with no variable stagger or lean. The variable stagger blade arrangement has the potential of better aligning the diffuser leading edges with the highly non-uniform flow leaving the impeller. Both variable stagger and linearly leaned diffuser blade arrangements, however, have the effect of redistributing the blade loading and flow streamlines in the spanwise direction leading to improved efficiency and pressure recovery capacity of the diffuser. In this paper a description of the proposed diffuser geometries is presented. The results of Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes numerical simulations of the three centrifugal compressor arrangements are discussed. Comparisons between the performance of the two and three-dimensional diffuser blade geometries are presented. The comparisons indeed show that the variable stagger and leaned diffusers present an improvement in the diffuser operating range and pressure recovery capacity over the conventional two-dimensional diffuser geometry.

The endwall film-cooling cooling configuration investigated by Friedrichs et al. (1996, 1997) had in principle sufficient cooling flow for the endwall, but in practice, the redistribution of this coolant by secondary flows left large endwall areas uncooled. This paper describes the attempt to improve upon this datum cooling configuration by redistributing the available coolant to provide a better coolant coverage on the endwall surface, whilst keeping the associated aerodynamic losses small. The design of the new, improved cooling configuration was based on the understanding of endwall film-cooling described by Friedrichs et al. (1996, 1997). Computational fluid dynamics were used to predict the basic flow and pressure field without coolant ejection. Using this as a basis, the above described understanding was used to place cooling holes so that they would provide the necessary cooling coverage at minimal aerodynamic penalty. The simple analytical modelling developed in Friedrichs et al. (1997) was then used to check that the coolant consumption and the increase in aerodynamic loss lay within the limits of the design goal. The improved cooling configuration was tested experimentally in a large scale, low speed linear cascade. An analysis of the results shows that the redesign of the cooling configuration has been successful in achieving an improved coolant coverage with lower aerodynamic losses, whilst using the same amount of coolant as in the datum cooling configuration. The improved cooling configuration has reconfirmed conclusions from Friedrichs et al. (1996, 1997); firstly, coolant ejection downstream of the three-dimensional separation lines on the endwall does not change the secondary flow structures; secondly, placement of holes in regions of high static pressure helps reduce the aerodynamic penalties of platform coolant ejection; finally, taking account of secondary flow can improve the design of endwall film-cooling configurations.

Abstract To investigate the application of ribbed cross-flow coolant channels with film hole effusion and the effects of the internal cooling configuration on film cooling, experimental and numerical studies are conducted on the effect of the relative position of the film holes and different orientation ribs on the film cooling performance. Three cases of the relative position of the film holes and different orientation ribs (post-rib, centered, and pre-rib) in two ribbed cross-flow channels (135° and 45° orientation ribs) are investigated. The film cooling performances are measured under three blowing ratios by the transient liquid crystal measurement technique. A RANS simulation with the realizable k-ε turbulence model and enhanced wall treatment is performed. The results show that the cooling effectiveness and the downstream heat transfer coefficient for the 135° rib are basically the same in the three position cases, and the differences between the local effectiveness average values for the three are no more than 0.04. The differences between the heat transfer coefficients are no more than 0.1. The “pre-rib” and “centered” cases are studied for the 45° rib, and the position of the structures has little effect on the film cooling performance. In the different position cases, the outlet velocity distribution of the film holes, the jet pattern and the discharge coefficient are consistent with the variation in the cross flow. The related research previously published by the authors showed that the inclination of the ribs with respect to the holes affects the film cooling performance. This study reveals that the relative positions of the ribs and holes have little effect on the film cooling performance. This paper expands and improves the study of the effect of the internal cooling configuration on film cooling and makes a significant contribution to the design and industrial application of the internal cooling channel of a turbine blade.
