Experimental Investigation on the Rubbing Process of Labyrinth Seals Considering the Material Combination

Abstract Labyrinth seals are used to prevent and control the mass flow rate between rotating components. Due to thermally and mechanically induced expansions during operation and transient flight maneuvers, a contact, the so-called rubbing process, between rotor and stator cannot be excluded. A large amount of rubbing process data concerning numerical and experimental investigations is available in public literature as well as at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery (ITS). The investigations were carried out for different operating conditions, material combinations, and component geometries. In combination with the experiments presented in this paper, the effects of the different variables on load due to rubbing are compared, and discussed with the focus lying on the material combination. The influence of the material on the loads can be identified as detailed as never before. For example, the contact forces in the current experiments are higher due to a higher temperature resistance of Young’s modulus. The analysis will also be based on the rubbing of turbine blades. Design guidelines are derived for labyrinth seals with improved properties regarding tolerance of rub events. Based on the knowledge obtained, guidelines for designing reliable labyrinth seals for future engines are discussed.

A control oriented analysis of an anode recirculation system that uses an ejector with a variable throat area is presented for a PEMFC system. Two control issues addressed in this paper are (a) achieving desired recirculated flow to meet humidity control requirements, and (b) regulating anode pressure to protect the polymer membrane from deformation. To meet these objectives, a static feedforward controller using the variable throat area is applied to control the recirculation flow rate, while a proportional-integral controller is designed for anode pressure regulation. A dynamic system model comprising of a nonlinear static characterization of the ejector and dynamic representation of the anode recirculation flow path is developed for controller design and evaluation. Linear analysis is used to derive design guidelines for tuning the feedback controller and to analyze the interactions between the feedback and the feedforward controllers. Our analysis shows that the system characteristics are dependent on the operating condition of throat area of ejector. To meet the control objectives for different operating conditions, a gain scheduling scheme is proposed to adjust the feedback controller parameters and the performance is evaluated through simulations. Results for two representative conditions are included.

This part provides a comprehensive account of the main theorems and mechanisms developed in the literature concerning friction-induced noise and vibration. Some of these mechanisms are based on experimental investigations for classical models. Bilinear and nonlinear dynamical models have been considered to explain such friction phenomena as stick-slip, chatter, squeal, and chaos. Nonlinear modeling includes two types of nonlinearities which differ from those encountered in structural dynamics. These nonlinearities, in addition to the observed uncertainty of friction between sliding surfaces, form a formidable difficulty in developing accurate and reliable modeling. They include the inherent nonlinearity of contact forces (eg, Hertzian contact), and the nonlinear relationship between friction and sliding relative velocity. Research activities in this area are a mixture of theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigations. Theoretical investigations are prevailed by deterministic analysis with few attempts of stochastic treatment. The models include classical and practical engineering models such as the mass-spring model sliding on a running belt or on a surface with Hertzian contact, a pin sliding on a rotating disk, beams with friction boundaries, turbine blades, water-lubricated bearings, wheel-rail systems, disc brake systems and machine cutting tools. There is a strong need for further research to promote our understanding of the various friction mechanisms and to provide designers of sliding components with better guidelines to minimize the deteriorating effects of friction.

Labyrinth seals are a state-of-the-art sealing technology to prevent and control leakage flows at rotor–stator interfaces in turbomachinery. Higher pressure ratios and the economical use of cooling air require small clearances, which lead to potential rubbing events. The use of honeycomb liners allows for minimal leakage by tolerating rub events to a certain extent. A previous study within an EU project investigated the complex contact conditions of honeycomb liners, with the idealized contact of a seal fin and a single parallel metal foil representing the honeycomb double foil section. In the present work, the results for the slanted foil position are shown and compared to the previous results. The variation of rub velocity, incursion speed, incursion rate, and seal geometry in a test rig allows for the identification of the influence on contact forces, temperatures, and wear. For the slanted position, significantly lower friction temperatures are observed, leading to a higher ratio of abrasive wear. Overall, the rub test results demonstrate strong interactions between the contact forces, friction temperatures, and wear.

Experimental investigations of wind turbine blades having NACA airfoils 0021 and 4412 with and without tubercles on the leading edge have been performed in a wind tunnel. It was found that the lift coefficient of the airfoil 0021 with tubercles was higher at Re = 1.2×105 and 1.69×105 in post critical region (at higher angle of attach) than airfoils without tubercles but this difference relatively diminished at higher Reynolds numbers and beyond indicating that there is no effect on the lift coefficients of airfoils with tubercles at higher Reynolds numbers whereas drag coefficient remains unchanged. It is noted that at Re = 1.69×105, the lift coefficient of airfoil without tubercles drops from 0.96 to 0.42 as the angle of attack increases from 15° to 20° which is about 56% and the corresponding values of lift coefficient for airfoil with tubercles are 0.86 and 0.7 at respective angles with18% drop.

In this study, different characteristics of sustainable renewable biodiesels (those have a high potential of their production worldwide and in India) were compared with the characteristics of neat diesel to determine optimistic biodiesel for the diesel engine at 250 bar spray pressure. Optimistic fuel gives a comparatively lower level of emissions and better performance than other selected fuels in the study. Rubber seed oil methyl ester was investigated as an optimistic fuel among the other selected fuels such as sunflower oil methyl ester, neem seed oil methyl ester, and neat diesel. To enhance the performance characteristics and to further decrease the level of emission characteristics of fuel ROME, further experiments were conducted at higher spray (injection) pressures of 500 bar, 625 bar, and 750 bar with varying ignition delay period via varying its spray timings such as 8°, 13°, 18°, 23°, 28°, and 33° before top dead center. Spray pressure 250 bar at 23° before top dead center was investigated as an optimistic operating condition where fuel rubber seed oil methyl ester gives negligible hydrocarbon emissions (0.019 g/kW h) while its nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions were about 70% lesser than those observed with neat diesel, respectively.

This paper reports numerical predictions and measurements of the flow field in a stepped labyrinth seal. The theoretical work and the experimental investigations were successfully combined to gain a comprehensive understanding of the flow patterns existing in such elements. In order to identify the influence of the honeycomb structure, a smooth stator as well as a seal configuration with a honeycomb facing mounted on the stator wall were investigated. The seal geometry is representative of typical three-step labyrinth seals of modern aero engines. The flow field was predicted using a commercial finite volume code with the standard k-ε turbulence model. The computational grid includes the basic seal geometry as well as the three-dimensional honeycomb structures.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently attracted the attention of researchers due to their numerous potential civilian applications. However, current robot navigation technologies need further development for efficient application to various scenarios. One key issue is the “Sense and Avoid” capability, currently of immense interest to researchers. Such a capability is required for safe operation of UAVs in civilian domain. For autonomous decision making and control of UAVs, several path-planning and navigation algorithms have been proposed. This is a challenging task to be carried out in a 3D environment, especially while accounting for sensor noise, uncertainties in operating conditions, and real-time applicability. Heuristic and non-heuristic or exact techniques are the two solution methodologies that categorize path-planning algorithms. The aim of this paper is to carry out a comprehensive and comparative study of existing UAV path-planning algorithms for both methods. Three different obstacle scenarios test the performance of each algorithm. We have compared the computational time and solution optimality, and tested each algorithm with variations in the availability of global and local obstacle information.
