Northern pike heavily contaminated with methylmercury were captured from Clay Lake, Ontario, and released in Heming Lake, Manitoba, an area relatively free of mercury. Mercury levels in muscle biopsy samples at the time of transfer and at subsequent recaptures indicated that only 30% was eliminated in one year. Distribution among various body tissues was essentially unchanged, those organs most heavily contaminated being lens, kidney, and liver in decreasing order. Biochemical profiles of blood serum constituents showed several differences between samples from the two lakes, especially in levels of inorganic phosphate, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, and cortisol. Serum values for transplanted fish tended toward those in the clean lake and we have concluded that biochemical profiles were sensitive to the environmental change.

Female, male and castrated male ferrets were studied. Weight gain plateaued at 28-weeks of age with males about 500 g heavier than females. No statistically significant differences in haematology were observed with age, but alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase levels fell while glucose increased. Haemolysis led to various changes including marked increases in total protein, albumin, inorganic phosphate and sorbitol dehydrogenase.

The collection of alpaca semen presents difficulties because of the characteristics of mounts and copulation time in addition to the high viscosity of semen. The biophysical and biochemical characteristics of alpaca semen were investigated. Semen samples from four adult males from 6 to 7 years of age were collected using an electroejaculation technique. The biophysical parameters measured in seminal plasma included volume, color, sperm concentration, motility, and viscosity, and the biochemical parameters included pH and glucose, calcium, triglyceride, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total protein, albumin, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, and γ-glutamyltranspeptidase concentrations. The mean time for semen collection was 10.3 ± 1.5 min; the volume varied from 1.2 to 3.8 and the colour from clear to milky, and pH was 7.4 ± 0.03. Mean concentration of spermatozoa was 69.3 ± 193 million mL–1, and motility was 52.4 ± 9.7%. Biochemical parameters were glucose (mg dL–1) 8.22 ± 0.77; cholesterol (mg dL–1) 79.78 ± 5.64; triglycerides (mg dL–1) 44.12 ± 7.38; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (mg dL–1) 4.73 ± 0.30; total protein (g dL–1) 2.36 ± 0.15; albumin (g dL–1) 0.97 ± 0.33; calcium (mg dL–1) 11.77 ± 1.74; alanine transaminase (U L–1) 17.92 ± 9.09; alkaline phosphatase (U L–1) 288.76 ± 279.59; and γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (U L–1) 89.62 ± 39.09. These results provide information on the biophysical and biochemical characteristics of alpaca semen collected by electroejaculation, with variable results in the enzymatic components.

Biochemical parameters of blood serum in resistant and susceptible to rubella pathogens groups of carp at the end of the feeding period are studied. The material was taken from 6 individuals of the Angelina scaly rubella-resistant breed kept at the experimental pond base "Sunoga" of the Papanin Institute for Biology of Inland Waters RAS, Yaroslavl oblast. For comparison, we used same-age carps from the fish farm "Kirya", Chuvash Republic, susceptible to rubella pathogens: 8 specimens of scaly and 8 mirror carps. Blood samples were taken from the caudal vein of the fish under study. The tube with blood was left at room temperature. After coagulation, the serum was taken with a fine needle syringe and transferred to an Eppendorf tube. Serum samples were frozen prior to testing. The analyzed individuals of the Angelina rubella-resistant breed differ from the scaly and mirror carp in high levels of total protein, albumins, glucose, urea, alkaline phosphatase, triglycerides, cholesterol and low levels of lipids and alanine aminotransferase. A comparative analysis with previously obtained data after wintering shows differences between the autumn and spring data. In the Angelina breed, the levels of most indicators significantly increase during the fattening period. The content of total protein increases several times, mainly due to globulins, glucose, urea, alkaline phosphatase, triglycerides. Thus, the metabolic processes aimed at the accumulation of proteins, stored lipids and carbohydrates increase in the organism of rubella-resistant carps. This is probably due to some specific characteristics of the Angelina breed, which allows the fish organism to successfully resist an infection with rubella pathogens in spring. The results of this study can be used in breeding for immunity resistance and for assessing the health status of fish in aquaculture.

This study investigated the changes in the enzymatic and biochemical profiles of lactating, non-lactating, and young buffaloes during different sampling. In the present research thirty buffaloes (Nili-Ravi) were selected and divided into three categories lactating, non-lactating, and young. Four samplings were performed in different seasons (summer, autumn, winter, and spring), and 10 blood serum samples were collected from each category of Nili-Ravi buffaloes during each sampling period. Higher glucose, urea, creatinine, and mycotoxins (AFB1, ZEA, OTA) values were found during summer sampling season, higher SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) values were found during the autumn season, higher cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase and uric acid values were found during the winter season.

Two hundred and four Broiler chicks was used, divided into six equal groups, each group was vaccinated with one vaccine as fellows: BUR-706 group1 (G1), IBD-L (G2), TAD (G3), CH/80 (G4), D78 (G5) and Control (G6). ELISA test was used to estimate ND and Gumboro disease antibodies. Aspartate amino transferase (AST), Alanin amino transferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities, total protein and albumin and globuline concentrations in blood serum were estimated. Newcastle disease antibodies titers were high in G1 but low in G5 significantly. Gumboro disease titers were nonsignificant increase(p>0.05) in G1, G2 and G3 but nonsignificant low(p>0.05) in G4 and G5. Normal total protein, albumin and globuline concentrations and nonsignificant increase(p>0.05) in AST was noticed in vaccinated groups. ALT was significantly increased(p<0.05) in G1, G3, G4 while ALP activity was significantly increased.the BUR_706 and IBDL vaccines showed better results than others in broiler chicks, whileTAD and CH/80 vaccines were better D78.

The aim of the work was to determine some biochemical parameters, taking into account the sex of the outbred (conventional) rats in the norm, used at the experiment to determine the reference val-ues. The experiments were carried out on 41 rats of 5-6 months age old., weighing 200-250 g, divided into two groups - males (n = 16) and fe-males (n = 25). Blood serum was obtained accord-ing to the generally accepted method. Blood serum was obtained according to standard methods. Biochemical parameters were analyzed on an IDEXX CatalystOne automated analyzer. Protein and carbohy-drate metabolism were analyzed by the se-rum levels of total protein (TP), albumin (Alb), urea (Urea), creatinine (Creat), glu-cose (Glu), the enzyme spectrum - by alka-line phosphatase (ALP), alanine and aspar-tate aminotransferase (ALT and AST), min-eral metabolism - by calcium (Ca), phospho-rus (P), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chlo-rine (Cl), as well as bile pigment - by total bilirubin (T.bil). De Ritis coefficient (AST / ALT), globulin (Glob), albumin/globulin ratio (A / G) was revealed by the calculation method. The results were taken into account in two versions: 1 - according to all animals (16 males and 25 females); 2 - according to samples from the general population in three replicates. It was found that out of 17 biochemical parameters -15 are constant, due to the sex of the experimental animals. So, females showed higher indicators of protein and min-eral metabolism, glucose, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, while in males this was record-ed only in four cases - in the content of urea and AST and in the ratios A / G, AST / ALT. Data on the content of creatinine and total bilirubin in the blood serum of rats were variable in nature and were close in value. Thus, the results of the studies carried out can be used in the future, for biochemical diagnostics of systematic metaboli

AbstractObjectivesThe main objective of the present study is to evaluate the mitigative effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Momordica cymbalaria fruits against sodium fluoride (NaF) induced hepatotoxicity.MethodsIn this study, Wistar male albino rats were randomly divided into five groups of six rats each. Group I and II served as normal and toxic controls. Group III as plant control received extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg b. wt, p.o and Groups IV and V as treatment groups received extract at a dose 200 and 400 mg/kg b. wt, p.o for 30 days. All groups except Groups I and III received 100 ppm of NaF through drinking water. After completion of the study, blood collected for the estimation of liver blood serum biomarkers such as aspartate aminotransferases (AST), alanine aminotransferases (ALT), alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), direct and total bilirubin, total protein and albumin. The liver tissue homogenate was for estimation of lipid peroxidation, catalase, and reduced glutathione levels.ResultsThe results showed that NaF intoxication caused elevation of liver blood serum levels and lipid peroxidation; decreased levels of serum total protein, albumin and liver reduced glutathione, and catalase observed. The treatment groups showed decreased elevated serum biomarkers (ALT, AST, and ALP), liver lipid peroxidation and increased serum total protein and albumin, liver reduced glutathione and catalase levels in a dose-dependent manner. Histopathological studies also further strongly supported for mitigative effects of the plant.ConclusionsIn conclusion, our findings of the study indicated that M. cymbalaria fruits were a potential drug candidate in the treatment of NaF induced hepatotoxicity.

In this study, the authors have analyzed the possible effects of one-year adjuvant treatment with tamoxifen on bone mineral density in postmenopausal breast cancer women. Bone mineral content was studied by photon absorptiometry (I-125), whereas bone balance was analyzed indirectly by serum PTH, osteocalcin, calcitonin, calcium and alkaline phosphatase levels. Bone mineral content and serum bone-related substances were measured before starting treatment and after one year. Results were analyzed using Student's t test for paired data. No difference was found between the two measurements for bone mineral content, PTH, calcitonin, calcium and alkaline phosphatase levels. Measurements at entry and after one year of treatment showed a statistically significant difference ( P < 0.001) only for osteocalcin. In accordance with other authors, we can conclude that treatment with tamoxifen does not cause an increase in menopausal bone resorption. The finding that osteocalcin levels decreased after one year of therapy with tamoxifen is interesting, but further studies are necessary to clarify the role of such levels in predicting a turnover of bone balance towards osteoblastic activity.
