Physiological maturation and reproductive behaviour of female doves (Streptopelia risoria) held under long and short photoperiods

Female doves were held under long (16 h per day), or short (8 h per day) photoperiod and exposed to actively courting males for 4.5 h per day for 15 days. The occurrence of egg laying and nest building was recorded daily. Behavioural observations were recorded for 15 min on alternate days.Seven out of eight long-photoperiod females laid eggs, whereas only one of nine short-photoperiod females began egg laying. Soliciting by the female and nest building involving male and female are the best indicators of a female's readiness to begin breeding. The occurrence of these activities is correlated with the growth of follicles and oviduct. Copulation and associated behaviours are not correlated with follicle and oviduct growth, and appear to be controlled by factors different from those governing courtship behaviour associated with the nest site.

Female ring doves held under long (16 h per day) or short (8 h per day) photoperiods were treated daily for 15 days with saline, estrogen, or progesterone, alone or in combination. Seven days after the start of hormone therapy females were placed with reproductively active males for 4 h per day for 9 days. There was no difference in egg-laying, courtship, and nest-building by control birds under the two photoregimes.Ovarian follicles remained small in all birds receiving hormone treatment. Oviducts of birds receiving progesterone alone remained small in the short-photoperiod group, but at long photoperiods oviducts became enlarged. Estrogen stimulated oviduct growth at both photoperiods. The combined hormone treatment resulted in considerably greater oviduct development than estrogen alone, and in this case the oviducts of birds under long photoperiod were significantly heavier than those of short-photoperiod birds.Female soliciting and nest-building activity remained low in progesterone-treated females under short photoperiod, but increased rapidly under long photoperiod. Birds treated with estrogen and estrogen and progesterone performed considerable soliciting and nest-building. There was a marked tendency for birds under long-photoperiod conditions to be more active in nest-oriented behaviour. Copulatory behaviour by the female (begging and sexual crouch) occurred infrequently in all hormone-treated birds.

AbstractIn paired ring doves, Streptopelia risoria, male and female reproductive behaviour undergoes a series of synchronised transitions. The duration of each phase depends on the reproductive development of the pair. This study examines the effect of the environment in which behaviour is shown on both oestrogen-dependent courtship transitions and formation of oestrogen in the brain. The structuring of the cage environment had an immediate effect on transitions in male courtship behaviour. Males which were tested with females in a cage environment with a perch and a nest bowl (complex cage) displayed significantly less aggressive courtship and more nest-orientated behaviour than males tested with females in a cage environment without perch or nest bowl (simple cage). The response of males, which showed aggressive and nest-orientated courtship behaviour, to reproductively advanced females (abdominal length 1.4-1.6 cm) about to lay eggs or females in earlier stages of reproductive development (abdominal length 0.8-1.1 cm) did not differ initially. On the eighth day of 15-min daily tests, there was, however, an increase in aggressive courtship to females with smaller abdomens. This result suggests that male aggressiveness is more likely when the male and female reproductive cycles are not synchronised. We also tested whether environmental factors and the male's hormonal condition, which affect male courtship interactions, influence the formation of behaviourally effective oestrogen by aromatisation of testosterone in the brain. The aromatase activity was measured in the preoptic and anterior hypothalamic areas in relation to the time spent in interaction with females each day. Both intact and castrated males which interacted intermittently (15 min each day for 9 days) had higher preoptic aromatase activity than males which interacted continuously with females. The males which had high brain aromatase activity and had interacted intermittently with females were considered to represent the initial stages of the cycle. We conclude that cage environment and female reproductive condition influence the course of courtship interactions. Oestrogen formation in the male brain is affected by the type of interaction.

This work was carried out to determine whether gonadotrophin releasing hormone(s) (GnRH) plays a role in the courtship behaviour of female ring doves. In particular, it tests the hypothesis that a high dose of oestrogen suppresses the synergistic action of GnRH with oestrogen which is required to elicit courtship behaviour. The hypothesis was formulated to provide an explanation for a finding in a previous study that ovariectomized ring doves treated with a high dose of oestrogen, paradoxically, failed to show courtship behaviour. In the present study, treatment with synthetic LH releasing hormone (RH) enabled such birds to show typical female behaviour, thus supporting the hypothesis. This LH-RH effect was not apparently mediated by LH or progesterone since treatment with LH or progesterone failed to induce courtship behaviour. In addition, LH-RH can synergise with sub-threshold doses of oestrogen to induce both nest-soliciting and squatting behaviour. This portion of the LH-RH effect complements similar results reported for the rat. Finally, the results of thyrotrophin releasing hormone point to the specificity of LH-RH and the results of an anti-ovulation LH-RH analogue agree with the LH-RH effect.

Seven categories of maintenance behaviour have been recognized and described for M. australiense. These are 'normal stance', 'body cleaning', 'locomotion', 'food search and feeding', 'defaecation'. 'alarm reaction', and 'moulting'. These behaviour patterns are compared with similar patterns described previously for other caridean prawns. Behaviour patterns leading to successful mating in M. australiense include 'courtship and nest building', 'copulation', and 'egg-laying'. Ripe females seek out dominant males, which then build a nest. The male protects the female in the nest during pro-ecdysis and the pair copulate after the female moults. Eggs are usually laid within 12 h of copulation.

AbstractTwo experiments were performed to evaluate some of the controlling factors in ring dove nest-building behaviour. In the first study six pairs of animals were observed each day until the first egg appeared. Behaviour was recorded during four intervals on each day in order to obtain estimates of diurnal changes in behaviour. Moreover, each pair was presented with a variety of nest-building materials in order to determine those kinds that would be most acceptable to the animals in subsequent studies. The birds showed striking diurnal changes in behaviour. Bow-cooing, aggressive pecking by the male, nest soliciting, time-in-the-nest, and allopreening exhibited a steady decline throughout the day. Nest-building activity reached a peak between one and seven hours after the lights came on in the morning and then declined throughout the remainder of the day. By contrast, copulatory behaviour, though infrequent in the morning hours, rose sharply in the late afternoon and reached a peak during the evening watch. Feeding and self-preening also increased slightly during the afternoon and evening. The ring doves also showed marked preferences in their choice of nest materials. Light-colored reed was preferred almost exclusively to dark-colored reed. Moreover, as nest construction progressed, there was a change in the type of material collected. During early building approximately equal numbers of pine needles as well as light and heavy reed were collected. As the nest neared completion, reed collection diminished and pine needles alone were collected. The resulting structure consisted of a base of several materials lined with pine needles alone. Observations in this first experiment suggested that gathering activity by the male was elicited by the presence of the female in the nest site. A second experiment was designed to examine this relationship. Twelve female ring doves were injected with progesterone and diethylstilboestrol while another twelve females served as oil-injected controls. Hormone-treated females were found to become more firmly established at the nest site during the first two days after introduction to a male. The males mated with these hormone-treated females engaged in more nest material gathering than did males mated with oil-treated females. It was concluded that gathering behaviour by the male is determined, at least in part, by relevant social cues from the female.

Spotted-backed Weaverbirds were studied during September-December, 1969 in the Transvaal, chiefly in the Kruger National Park, and observations were made on their distribution, ecology and behaviour. Territorial behaviour, nest-building, pair formation displays, vocalizations and food habits are described as well as the division of labour between male and female in care of the young. Attacks by snakes and hawks are described as well as responses of the birds to their enemies. Behavioural relations to another species of weaver were also observed.

Studies of the yellow dungfly in the 1960s provided one of the first quantitative demonstrations of the costs and benefits associated with male and female reproductive behaviour. These studies advanced appreciation of sexual selection as a significant evolutionary mechanism and contributed to the 1970s paradigm shift toward individual selectionist thinking. Three behaviours in particular led to the realization that sexual selection can continue during and after mating: (i) female receptivity to remating, (ii) sperm displacement and (iii) post-copulatory mate guarding. These behaviours either generate, or are adaptations to sperm competition, cryptic female choice and sexual conflict. Here we review this body of work, and its contribution to the development of post-copulatory sexual selection theory. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Fifty years of sperm competition’.

This study aimed to determine the effect of parity and season of calving on the probability of water buffalo cows becoming pregnant before 90 days postpartum. A retrospective analysis of reproductive records of 1,465 water buffaloes with 3,181 pregnancies was carried out. Buffaloes were grouped according to parity in one, two, or three and more calvings. Season of calving was created with the following values: long photoperiod (March-August) and short photoperiod (September-February) and predicted probabilities from the mixed-effects logistic regression model were calculated, and a generalized linear mixed model was fitted with random intercepts to calculate the log odds of becoming pregnant ≤90 days postpartum. The probability of pregnancy ≤90 days postpartum was 0.3645, and this was lower in primiparous (0.2717) in comparison with two-calved (0.3863) and three or more calving buffaloes (0.5166). Probability of pregnancy ≤90 days postpartum increased 1.77 odds by each increase in parity. The probability of becoming pregnant ≤90 days postpartum was higher in water buffaloes calving during the short photoperiod season (0.4239 vs. 0.2474, P>0.000), and water buffaloes calving during the long photoperiod season only had 0.2645 odds to become pregnant than those calving during the short photoperiod season. The negative effect of long photoperiod was observed indifferently of parity. In conclusion, primiparity and the long photoperiod affect water buffalo cow's reproductive performance, decreasing pregnancy probability during the first 90 days postpartum.

SUMMARY To determine whether the display of male courtship behaviour depends on the action of androgen on discrete areas of the brain, single crystalline implants of testosterone propionate (TP) (mean weight 40 μg) were positioned unilaterally in the brains of castrated male Barbary doves. Implants in the preoptic, anterior hypothalamic and lateral hypothalamic areas induced the full courtship display consisting of chasing, bowing and nestsoliciting. None of these behaviour patterns was re-established at precastration levels measured in terms of duration of display. Durations of courtship displayed by implanted males were similar to those induced by daily intramuscular injections of TP (300 μg/day × 15) into castrated birds. The effectiveness of implants of TP into other regions of the brain could be related to their proximity to the preoptic and anterior hypothalamic regions. There were marked deficits in the pattern of courtship of castrated doves with implants in areas adjacent to the preoptic and anterior hypothalamic regions — the neostriatum intermediale, the area basalis, and posterior hypothalamus; implants more distantly placed in the paleostriatum primitivum and lateral forebrain bundle area did not induce courtship behaviour. Cholesterol implants (59 μg) and blank implant tubing in the preoptic and anterior hypothalamic areas did not affect behaviour. The results obtained were not specific for TP implants; chasing and nest-soliciting displays were also induced by either testosterone implants (51 μg) or oestradiol-17β monobenzoate implants (47 μg). In both cases, the courtship display lacked bowing. It is concluded that the preoptic and anterior hypothalamic areas are directly sensitive to testosterone and that these areas are associated with the control of courtship behaviour.

ABSTRACT Serum concentrations of testosterone, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, oestradiol and progesterone were measured by radioimmunoassay combined with Celite chromatography in male and female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) during the second half of embryonic life (days 9–17 of incubation) and during the first 5 weeks after hatching. The mean level of each of the four steroids was significantly affected by the age of the birds. An overall effect of sex was detected by analysis of variance only on oestradiol concentrations, with females having higher serum concentrations than males during most of the age range studied. Significant peaks of testosterone and progesterone were also detected around hatching time. These results are consistent with the view that oestradiol is the major hormone implicated in the sexual differentiation of reproductive behaviour in the quail. The relationships between the circulating concentrations of oestradiol during ontogeny and the critical period of differentiation as postulated by currently accepted models is also discussed. J.
