The communicative ecology model of successful aging (CEMSA) examines how people’s language and communication surrounding the aging process (e.g., making age-related excuses) predicts successful aging. Using the CEMSA, this study examined how middle-aged U.S. American children’s and their parents’ age-related communication predicts children’s subjective perceptions of their own successful aging, via children’s aging efficacy. Three communication profiles emerged for children and their parents, namely engaged, bantering, and disengaged agers. Path analysis revealed that parents’ age-related communication predicted children’s successful aging, via children’s aging efficacy. Relative to children with disengaged parents, children with bantering parents were more likely to be efficacious with respect to their aging, which in turn positively predicted successful aging. The language and communication people observe from older family members may be consequential in shaping their aging trajectories for the better or worse.

This article examines the patterns and meanings of innovation in the activities of a group of retirees with an eye toward understanding the place and value of innovation in the aging process. Starting with a consideration of continuity theory, as a perspective that simply describes typical patterns of activity, and activity theory that prescribes expansion of activities as a key to well-being, this article highlights the characteristics, meanings and perceived benefits of a wide variety of innovative activities. The study utilized in-depth semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 20 male and female retirees involved in a “Learning and Retirement” program. Innovations that both preserve a sense of self (internal continuity) as well as those that allow one to strike out in entirely new direction are described, and, using a process of constant comparison, their motivational dynamics are explored. Given previous arguments that activity can be indiscriminate and disintegrative in some circumstances, we nevertheless suggest that innovation can be growth producing and liberating, even in later life, while at the same time generally protecting a sense of internal continuity.

Introduction: Brazil has experienced an epidemiological transition process, characterized by an aging population, with a rise in chronic diseases and reduction in infectious diseases. In this context, aging brings about the presence of multimorbidities and the use of multiple drugs associated with a worse quality of life of those people. Objectives: To analyze the determinants of quality of life in physically independent elderly. Method: Cross-sectional study of 498 elderly physically independent, divided into three groups according to the presence of comorbidities: I) Control group: no comorbidities; II) Group comorbidities: <3 comorbidities; and III) multimorbidities Group: ≥ 3 comorbidities and were also stratified on the use of medications in: I) Control group: non-medicated; II) medicated Group: <3 drugs; and III) polymedicated Group: ≥ 3 drugs. Structured questionnaires were applied to survey data on socio-demographic characteristics, history of comorbidities and medication use, as well as the SF-36 questionnaire as a quality of life assessment method. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the quality of life regarding gender, educational level, economic status and multimorbidities. The results show that in elderly populations there is inequality in non-white races and among women in matters regarding access to health services. These groups show bigger probability to have more serious chronic conditions and a bad perception of health and quality of life. It is also very clear that in third world countries, a lot of elderly live in poverty having difficulties in the area of health, a major challenge to the implementation of public policies for the care of those people. Lastly, the results make it evident that the aging process has a direct relationship to the amount of installed diseases and increased use of medications. Conclusion: As much as the results showed that the decline of quality of life in physically independent elderly is related to the presence of multimorbidities and high medication intake, researchers state that people can age with a good quality of life if they opt for a successful aging process where significant activities gain space along with daily actions.

Abstract We report on a study designed to integrate the convoy model of social relations with the successful aging model. The combined approach draws on the natural resources of interpersonal relations to promote successful aging thus minimizing risk of disease and disability, enhancing\maintaining mental and physical functioning, and facilitating continued engagement in life. We describe the MacHouse Affordable Housing Study, a field experiment conducted in an affordable senior housing community. The experiment involved a resident driven intensive intervention program designed to increase social activities and engagement. Based on an extensive needs assessment and interviews with the resident council as well as individual residents a program of activities was developed. This included group meals, an exercise program that included a walking group and an exercise class, communal gardens, computer classes and resident outings. Results indicate that more frequent participation in these activities was associated with increased life satisfaction over time.

Abstract The contribution of the immune system to healthy aging and longevity is still an open question. For this reason, several immune parameters (T, B, and natural killer [NK] cell subsets; non-major histocompatibility complex [MHC]-restricted cytotoxic activities, ie, natural and redirected killing [RDK] activities) were studied in a total of 138 healthy subjects of different ages, from 4 to 106 years of age, including 26 centenarians. The major age-related modifications were the following: (1) a decrease in the absolute number of T lymphocytes (CD3+), involving both CD4+ and CD8+ subsets, accompanied by a marked concomitant increase in the number of activated T cells (CD3+, HLA- DR+); (2) a marked decrease in the number of B lymphocytes (CD19+); and (3) an increase in the number of cells with markers of NK activity and of T lymphocytes able to mediate non-MHC-restricted cytotoxicity. These modifications linearly progressed with age and centenarians followed the trend, suggesting that their immune system did not escape the aging process. However, other immunohematologic parameters (number of red blood cells, platelets, and leukocytes) and important immune functions, such as cytotoxic activities (NK and RDK cell activities), were well preserved throughout life until the last decades of life. Unexpectedly, in apparently healthy middle-aged subjects, a decrease of cytotoxic activities was observed in comparison with those of both young controls and centenarians. In conclusions, our data suggest that in centenarians some immune responses are kept at a high level of efficiency, likely contributing to their successful aging. However, this selected group of people does not escape the aging process, as shown by the progressive derangement of a variety of immune parameters.

Technology can assist older adults to maintain an active lifestyle. To better understand the effect that technology has on aging perception, we conducted two studies. In the first study, through supraliminal priming, we analyzed the effects of aging- and technology-related stimuli on age estimation. In the second study, we conducted a technological intervention with a group of elders who used four interactive devices and analyzed effects on perceived aging. Results showed that technology-related stimuli did not affect estimated age. From the second study, we generated a sociotechnical model that explains the processes connecting technology use with successful aging. We concluded that the use of technology affects aging perception, although it depends on whether the elder people have a proactive attitude toward their aging process a priori.
