A bored cup of the Mississippian crinoid Synbathocrinus Phillips

Only the second bored cup of the disparid crinoid Synbathocrinus conicus Phillips is described, infested by a pit of Oichnus paraboloides Bromley. Both bored specimens are from the Mississippian of Salthill Quarry, Clitheroe, Lancashire, UK, although the search for others has extended from northern Europe to North America. The first, described 30 years ago, infested a plate triple-junction of the cup on the presumed up-current side of the crinoid; the new specimen, in contrast, is in the centre of a radial plate, which is inflated as a growth response to infestation. We informally name the producing organism the ‘Salthill bug’. Although unknown, this was a small, unmineralized invertebrate that commonly attached to elevated positions on living crinoids and was likely a filter feeder. It constructed a domicile by boring into the crinoid endoskeleton, and could invade both living and dead crinoid skeletons. On crinoid stems it was commonly gregarious, a habit perhaps favoured by secretions by the first ‘Salthill bug’ to settle, attracting conspecific larvae and similar to the settling patterns of some modern sessile invertebrates. Comparison with Oichnus from Trearne Quarry, Ayrshire, UK, reveals several differences between the pits in infested crinoids at the two sites.

Abstract C. abietis is a microcyclic rust fungus; an obligate parasite completing its life cycle on species of Picea (spruce). Only the current year's needles of Picea are infected and those needles are shed early. Reported from northern Europe and Asia, the fungus is a Regulated Pest for the USA. It is absent from North America, where susceptible species are native, and Australia and New Zealand, where they are introduced. Although usually not a significant problem in its native range, because conditions are not favourable for heavy infections every year (Smith et al., 1988; Hansen, 1997), this rust could be more damaging as an invasive in other temperate areas. Due to the fact that small amounts of infection may be overlooked, accidental introduction could occur through importation of infected seedlings or young trees.

Cognettia sphagnetorum (Vejdovský, 1878), a common inhabitant of forest soils and bogs in northern Europe, is a model organism in soil biology. We report the first documented occurrence of C. sphagnetorum in North America, based on DNA sequencing from a Sphagnum bog in western Washington, USA. Sequences were identical to that of worms from Sweden and the Czech Republic.

AbstractAt the Murray Springs Clovis site in southeastern Arizona, stratigraphic and geomorphic evidence indicates that an abnormally low water table 10,900 yr B.P. was followed soon thereafter by a water-table rise accompanied by the deposition of an algal mat (the “black mat”) that buried mammoth tracks, Clovis artifacts, and a well. This water-table fluctuation correlates with pluvial lake fluctuations in the Great Basin during and immediately following Clovis occupation of that region. Many elements of Pleistocene megafauna in North America became extinct during the dry period. Oxygen isotope records show a marked decrease in δ18O correlated with the Younger Dryas cold-dry event of northern Europe which ended 10,750 yr B.P., essentially the same time as the water table began to rise in southeastern Arizona. Clovis hunters may have found large game animals easier prey when concentrated at water holes and under stress. If so, both climate and human predation contributed to Pleistocene extinction in America.

Two species within the Delia cardui species group were known to have males with the abdominal sternite III bipartite or very deeply incised, viz., D. bipartita Suwa from Japan and China and D. polaris Griffiths from extreme northern and high-altitude sites in North America. Two new species with this extraordinary character are described from northern Europe: D. rimiventris sp. nov. from southern Norway (Vest-Agder; Oppland) and southern Finland (Regio aboensis; Karelia australis) and D. bipartitoides sp. nov. from northern Sweden (Norrbotten). Further records of the latter species from Mongolia and Russia (Yakutia) are given. A discussion and redefinition of the Delia cardui species group and a key to male Delia with a divided sternite III are given.

Cystodermella cinnabarina is reported here for the first time from the moist temperate forests of western Himalaya and is the first collection of a Cystodermella from Pakistan. This species is redescribed here using morphological and molecular data. The phylogenetic analysis which is based on internal transcribed spacers (ITS) showed that the Pakistani collection clustered distinctly with similar European sequences in the Cystodermella clade. The Italian and north European sequences of this species clustered in two separate subclades and the Pakistani sequences closely matched the Italian sequences. It is evident that the Pakistani population has a very close evolutionary affinity with the Italian individuals rather than those from northern Europe. The species is distributed in Europe, in North America, and now in the western Himalaya of Asia.
