The identification of potential rockfall and the accurate prediction of its trajectory are critical in prevention and mitigation of rockfall hazard. It is an important precondition to assess the uncertainty of rockfall motion, study the effective identification technology of potential rockfall, predict the rockfall trajectory, and calculate the threatened area by rockfall hazards. In this study, field investigations and numerical simulations were carried out to identify potential rockfall on a weathered rock slope. As a case study, our calculations results show that the area of tensile stress concentration and plastic failure is the potential area where the rockmass will fall off the surface of the weathered rock slope. A mathematical model for calculating the rockfall influence area of the weathered rock slope was established based on the optimization theory, neural network technology, and genetic optimization algorithm. The rockfall influence area of the weathered rock slope was determined using maximum horizontal distance of rockfall in the specified slope cross sections and described on the topographic map using spline curves to form a closed possibly vulnerable area. As a case study, our calculations confirm that the distributions of the plastic failure and tensile stress areas obtained from the numerical simulations are consistent with the dangerous rock masses identified by field investigations at Guanyindong Slope that is a popular tourist scenic spot in Zhejiang Province, China. In this study, it has been indicated that the influence area can be used as the basis for the design of passive protection methods for rock slopes vulnerable to rockfall hazards.

The research aimed to study 24 rock slope surfaces along the road around Hon Lon Island, Kien Hai district, Kien Giang province, Vietnam. The analytical results have determined slope failure, wedge failure, and toppling, which occurred on almost slope surface and the average percentage of plane failure is the largest. The average percent of plane failure is 19.23%, the wedge failure is 15.35%, and the toppling fault is 6.73%. Besides, the analytical results have also identified the slope surfaces which can be the key blocks: ND-13, 18, 23, 25, 34, 37, 45, 51, 62, 63. The other analytical results show that the existence of key blocks at the rock slope surfaces in the N-S direction, dip to E at the survey locations: ND-13, 23, 63 and dip to W at the survey locations: ND-37, 45; in the NE-SW direction, dip to SE at the survey locations: ND-15, 62 and dip to NW at the survey locations: ND-18, 34; in the NW-SE direction, dip to SW at the survey location ND-51. These results have important significance to support for protecting slope surface safety.

Abstract Several species of willowherb (Epilobium) are considered as agricultural weeds and their prevalence has become an increasing problem in agriculture. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of willowherb plants in the initial stage of vegetation succession a year after the use of glyphosate. The study was based on the examination of thirteen willowherb specimens collected in the apple orchard of 0.2 ha area in August 2008, one month after glyphosate treatment, and vegetation field investigations in the same orchard in July 2009. The coverage of herb layer, the abundance and life stages of Epilobium plants in twenty plots of 1 m2 in size were investigated. The specimens of willowherbs, which survived the glyphosate application in 2008, were identified as Epilobium ciliatum and E. tetragonum. A year after the glyphosate treatment, the willowherb plants prevailed in the vegetation. One alien (E. ciliatum) and three native (E. hirsutum, E. parviflorum and E. tetragonum) species of willowherb were found. E. ciliatum was the most abundant. This species was characterized by the highest number of reproductive and virginile plants. E. parviflorum and E. tetragonum plants were abundant with a very high proportion of reproductive plants. Only pre-reproductive plants of E. hirsutum occurred in the study plots. The reproductive plants represented more than one third of the total number of willowherb plants. The distribution patterns of willowherb species in the plots were very variable.

Inlet is one of the basic elements of squirrel cage fan that can have great effect on performance and losses, especially between inlet exit and first section of impeller width. In this paper the effect of axial gap between inlet diffuser and impeller on performance and flow pattern is considered. Three diffuser inlet sizes with respect to impeller size (smaller, nearly same and bigger than inner impeller diameter) and three axial gaps within the available dimensions of the casing and impeller were chosen. Numerical simulations were performed to find the effect of this axial gap on flow pattern, performance and efficiency. From the simulation of each case study, flow pattern and its mechanism and the causes that affecting the efficiency and performance due to axial gap are analyzed and presented.
