The focus of this study is to analyse the free vibration of cylindrical shells under third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT). The constitutive equations of the cylindrical shells are obtained using third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT). The surface and traverse displacements are expected to have cubic and quadratic variation. Spline approximation is used to approximate the displacements and transverse rotations. The resulting generalized eigenvalue problem is solved for the frequency parameter to get as many eigenfrequencies as required starting from the least. From the eigenvectors, the spline coefficients are computed from which the mode shapes are constructed. The frequency of cylindrical shells is analysed by varying circumferential node number, length dimension, layer number, and different materials. The authenticity of the present formulation is established by comparing with the available FEM results.

The paper researches the free vibration of a rectangular plate with one or more cracks. The plate thickness varies along the x-axis with linear rules. Using Shi's third-order shear deformation theory and phase field theory to set up the equilibrium equations, which are solved by finite element methods. The frequency of free vibration plates is calculated and compared with the published articles, the agreement between the results is good. Then, the paper will examine the free vibration frequency of plate depending on the change of the plate thickness ratio, the length of cracks, the number of cracks, the location of cracks and different boundary conditions

The effects of third-order shear deformation theory and varied shear correction coefficient on the vibration frequency of thick functionally graded material cylindrical shells with fully homogeneous equation under thermal environment are investigated. The nonlinear coefficient term of displacement field of third-order shear deformation theory is included to derive the fully homogeneous equation under free vibration of functionally graded material cylindrical shells. The determinant of the coefficient matrix in dynamic equilibrium differential equations under free vibration can be represented into the fully fifth-order polynomial equation, thus the natural frequency can be found. Two parametric effects of environment temperature and functionally graded material power law index on the natural frequency of functionally graded material thick cylindrical shells with and without the nonlinear coefficient term of displacement fields are computed and investigated.

This article develops the modified couple stress theory to study the free vibration of bi-directional functionally graded microplates subjected to multidimensional temperature distribution. Third-order shear deformation and classical theories of plates are adapted for free vibration analysis of thick and thin microplates, respectively. Employing the third-order shear deformation theory, both normal and shear deformations are considered without the need for shear correction factor. Material of the bi-directional functionally graded microplate is graded smoothly through the length and thickness of the microplate. Gradient of the material is assumed to obey from the power law in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. Assuming the uniform and nonuniform temperature distributions, the effect of thermal environment on dynamic behavior of the microplate is discussed in detail. Applying the Ritz method, the displacement field is expanded by admissible functions which satisfy the essential boundary conditions, and Hamilton principle is employed to determine the natural frequencies of the microplate. Developed model has been applied to determine the natural frequencies in problems of thin/thick, one-directional/bi-directional functionally graded, and homogeneous/nonhomogeneous microplates. Effects of parameters such as the thermal environment, power law indexes [Formula: see text] and length scale parameter on free vibration of these problems are studied in detail. The results show that higher values of length scale parameter and temperature rise decrease the natural frequency of the bi-directional functionally graded microplate. According to results obtained by classical and third-order shear deformation theories, the third-order shear deformation theory is proposed for vibration analysis of microplates with thickness-to-length ratio less than five.

The present paper deals with the free vibration modal analysis of hybrid laminates using a finite element model based on the third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) and the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). A computer code has been developed using MATLAB, 2013. The experimental investigation on the free vibration of hybrid laminates made of carbon and glass fibres has been conducted. The hybrid laminate is prepared by placing carbon fibres in the outermost laminae and glass fibres in the rest of the laminate. The bi-directional glass and carbon fabrics and the epoxy resin are used for the preparation of laminates in the laboratory. The experimental models of laminates have been prepared by the resin infusion process using vacuum bagging technique. The natural frequencies of hybrid laminates for different modes are determined and the mode shapes are plotted for the corresponding frequencies by experiment and numerical procedure. The finite element formulations based on TSDT and FSDT for the composite laminates predict the natural frequencies and are validated by comparing with the experimental results.
