A new cystoid nematode, Cryphodera japonicum n. sp. (Nematoda: Heteroderidae), from the rhizosphere of Japanese Podocarpus macrophyllus

Summary Cryphodera japonicum n. sp., detected at Ningbo port, China, from the rhizosphere of imported Japanese Podocarpus macrophyllus, is described. The new species is characterised by females with a globose body, protruding vulval lips, slightly concave anus-vulva profile, a stylet length of 37.2 (31.1-41.3) μm and a vulva-anus distance of 38.1 (34.7-44.1) μm. Males possess two lip annuli, a stylet length of 27 (22.5-30.6) μm long, three lines in lateral fields and a spicule 21.5 (19.1-23.0) μm long. Second-stage juveniles have bodies 543 (506-588) μm long, three lip annuli, a stylet 31.7 (29.2-34.5) μm long, three lines in the lateral fields, a conoid tail with a narrow rounded terminus, and a relatively long hyaline region occupying half of the tail length. Phylogenetic analyses based on the D2-D3 expansion segments of the 28S, ITS, partial 18S rRNA, and COI gene revealed the unique position of this species with other heteroderid nematodes, supporting its status as a new species of Cryphodera. The new species showed a close relationship with C. brinkmani.

The genus Ditylenchus consists of more than 60 species, some of which are plant parasites. In this paper we report on Ditylenchus laurae sp. n. from Poland, a new species associated with the aquatic plant, Potamogeton perfoliatus L. Ditylenchus laurae sp. n. is characterised by a long and slender body with L = 1881 (1523-2095) μm and 1875 (1690-2089) μm, a = 88.8 (72.5-102.5) and 89.7 (71.9-97.9), stylet length = 10.8 (9.6-12.1) μm and 8.3 (7.7-9.0) μm, tail length = 117.2 (103.5-126.7) μm and 102.4 (98.3-113.6) μm in females and males, respectively; four incisures, rounded stylet knobs, long basal bulb (about ten times as long as wide), post-vulval uterine sac from 4.3-5.6 vulval body diam. long, and mucronate tail. Characterisation using the ITS rRNA, COI and hsp90 gene sequences was conducted and a phylogenetic analyses revealed that D. laurae sp. n. belongs to the D. dipsaci complex.

Summary A new species of entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema borjomiense n. sp., was isolated from the body of the host insect, Oryctes nasicornis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in Georgia, in the territory of Borjomi-Kharagauli. Morphological characters indicate that the new species is closely related to species of the feltiae-group. The infective juveniles are characterised by the following morphological characters: body length of 879 (777-989) μm, distance between the head and excretory pore = 72 (62-80) μm, pharynx length = 132 (122-142) μm, tail length = 70 (60-80) μm, ratio a = 26.3 (23.0-29.3), H% = 45 (40-51), D% = 54 (47-59), E% = 102 (95-115), and lateral fields consisting of seven ridges (eight incisures) at mid-body. Steinernema borjomiense n. sp. was molecularly characterised by sequencing three ribosomal regions (the ITS, the D2-D3 expansion domains and the 18S rRNA gene) and the mitochondrial COI gene. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that S. borjomiense n. sp. differs from all other known species of Steinernema and is a member of the monticolum-group.

A new species of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis group is described from Ninh Thuan Province, southern Vietnam based on molecular divergence and morphological differences. Cyrtodactylus orlovi sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Indochinese bent-toed geckos by having the unique combination of the following characters: size medium (SVL 61.0–77.7 mm); dorsal tubercles in 16–20 irregular rows; 36–39 ventral scale rows; precloacal pores absent in females, 5 or 6 in males, in a continuous row; femoral pores absent; 3–8 enlarged femoral scales; postcloacal spurs 1 or 2; lamellae under toe IV 16–19; a continuous neckband; a highly irregular transverse banded dorsal pattern; the absence of transversely enlarged median subcaudal scales. In phylogenetic analyses, the new species was revealed to be the sister taxon to a clade consisting of Cyrtodactylus cattienensis and the most recently described species from Vietnam, C. chungi, with 12.1–12.4% and 11.7 % pairwise genetic divergence from the two species, respectively, based on a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene.

During field expeditions to the Tibetan Plateau, a collection of an undescribed species with several basidiomes was found. Morphological observation and DNA sequence analyses of the collection revealed a close relationship with Cleistocybe vernalis, the type species of the genus Cleistocybe. Therefore, a new species is proposed for the fungus with full morphological description accompanied by phylogenetic analyses. The discovery of the species extends the reported distribution of the genus from the north of America and Europe to Asia.

Specimens of Coccomyces collected from Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve in Guizhou Province of China were identified as a new species and named as Coccomyces fanjingshanensis. Phylogenetic analyses of the ITS gene and combined LSU and mtSSU genes indicate that this new taxon has a close relationship with Coccomyces huangshanensis, Coccomyces cupressinus and Coccomyces radiatus.The type collection was deposited in the Herbarium of the College of Life Science, Capital Normal University, Beijing, China (BJTC).

To date, only one species of whip spider has been recorded in China. Here, we describe a new species, Weygoldtia hainanensis sp. nov., from Hainan, China. The new species is morphologically similar to W. davidovi (Fage, 1946) and W. consonensis Miranda et al. 2021, but can be distinguished with a combination of the following characters: 26 segments in tibia I, 6-7 teeth on chelicerae, distitibia IV trichobothria sc and sf series each with 10-11 trichobothria. To validate our morphological inferences and support the erection of W. hainanensis sp. nov. as a new species, we sequenced the COI gene region for two individuals and performed molecular phylogenetic analyses. The inferred phylogenetic trees placed the new species within Weygoldtia and highlighted the evolutionary distinction between W. hainanensis sp. nov. and currently described whip spiders. The type specimens are deposited in the Museum of Biology, East China Normal University (ECNU).

Rotylenchus castilloi n. sp., a new bisexual species is described and illustrated based on morphological, morphometric and molecular data. The new species is characterised by having a hemispherical, continuous lip region with an irregular corncob-like appearance under SEM, very long stylet (62–68 µm), vulva located at 49.7–62.2% of body length from anterior end, with a protruding double epiptygma, a rounded to convex-conoid (rarely bi-lobed) tail with 8–12 annuli and specific sequences of D2-D3 segments of 28S and ITS1-rRNA genes. Differences between the new species and four other species of the genus (R. mesorobustus, R. cazorlaensis, R. magnus and R. jaeni) are discussed. Morphologically, the new species can be separated from these species mostly by its body length, lip region characters, stylet length and location of phasmid. Phylogenetic analyses using 721 bp partial sequences of D2-D3 expansion segments of the 28S and 590 bp ITS1-rRNA genes revealed the new species forming a clade with two isolates of R. eximius and two isolates of R. unisexus, two morphologically unrelated species.

Abstract Two species of cyst-forming nematodes belonging to the goettingiana group are described from woodland in Germany. Heterodera circeae sp. n., parasitising Circaea lutetiana (Onagraceae), most closely resembles H. carotae and H. cruciferae, from which it differs by larger cysts (430-720 μm) and longer fenestral length (27-54 μm) and rounded stylet knobs of the second-stage juveniles. Heterodera scutellariae sp. n., found on the labiate Scutellaria galericulata (Lamiaceae), is distinguished from the other species of this group by shorter body (358-437 μm) and tail (41-53 μm) of the second-stage juveniles. The ITS-rDNA sequences of the new species are very similar and differ from each other by only a few nucleotides. The phylogenetic position of the new species within the group is presented based on analyses of molecular data. A revised diagnosis of the goettingiana group is proposed. The species of the group have lemon-shaped, ambifenestrate and abullate (small bullae occasionally present) cysts with egg sac, long vulval slit (> 35 μm), thin vulval bridge, low semifenestrae (average fenestral length 30-45 μm), and weak underbridge. Second-stage juveniles are characterised by body length > 400 μm, tail length > 45 μ m, hyaline tail portion > 20 μm, stylet length > 20 μm, lateral field with four incisures and small phasmids. All known species of the goettingiana group exclusively parasitise dicotyledonous plants.

Summary A new species of pin nematode, Paratylenchus jasmineae sp. n., was isolated and described from the rhizosphere of jasmine in India. The new species can be diagnosed by having a relatively larger body length of 248-355 μm, stylet length of 24.6-28.5 μm, lateral field with four lateral lines, the presence of small post-vulval uterine sac and absence of advulval flaps in the females. Additional morphological characters included continuous lip region with small projected submedian lobes, large and oblong-shaped spermatheca, the presence of prevulval swelling, and arcuate conoid tail with finely rounded terminus. Molecular characterisation of the species was carried out based on internal transcribed spacer sequence (ITS rRNA) and D2-D3 expansion segment of 28S rRNA subunit. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and D2-D3 molecular markers resulted in clear separation of P. jasmineae sp. n. from other Paratylenchus species.

The genus Scutylenchus Jairajpuri 1971 (Nematoda: Tylenchida) is reviewed, and a compendium of the most importantdiagnostic characters with a key to the species are given. A new species, Scutylenchus dongtingensis n. sp., is describedfrom China, extracted from rhizosphere soil around grass near Dongting Lake in Hunan province. The new species ischaracterized by having body cuticle with 16–20 longitudinal striae forming blocks; lateral field with 6 incisures forming5 bands without areolation or any other decoration; a slightly offset head with 7 striae; slender stylet 22–25μm long, withcone about three fifths of stylet length; excretory pore inconspicuous under light microscope, located in region of anteriorpart of gland bulb in lateral view; female vulva slit transverse with small epiptygma in lateral view; conspicuous dot-likephasmid located at about one third of tail length posterior to anus; female tail subcylindrical, terminus round, annulated,terminal cuticle thickened; spicule slender, well developed, 27–32μm long, usually not protruded from cloaca;gubernaculum crescent-shaped, may be protruded from cloaca; bursa conspicuous, extending over tail terminus in ventral view.
