Eight new species of the diatom genus Gomphoneis Cleve from Xinjiang Province of northwest China are described. Observations were made using light and scanning electron microscopy, documenting the morphological diversity of the taxa, all of which are part of the G. elegans lineage, and lack isolated stigmoids. Five of the new species (Gomphoneis pseudosubtiloides, G. xinjiangiana, G. basiorobusta, G. stoermeri and G. distorta) have porelli in the apical pore fields organized into two rows, similar to the organization of the striae areolae. Three species (G. subtiloides, G. qii and G. rostratoides) have porelli of similar size, shape and organization to the areolae, supporting the interpretation that the apical pore fields in this group are condensed striae. The species from Xinjiang Province appear morphologically similar to taxa from the Balkans of Europe, and may be part of a wide continuum of distribution between that region and western North America. This is only the second report on Gomphoneis from Xinjiang Province. A number of taxa similar to the new species described herein, and related to Gomphoneis olivacea, are also considered. As a consequence, the total number of Gomphoneis taxa from China is greater than previously recognized.

A new species of genus Campylodiscus is described, Campylodiscus sinensis sp. nov., from Dongtan, Chongming Island, Shanghai, China. It is a small species compared with other species in genus Campylodiscus, with two characteristic kidney-shaped bumps externally and pyramidal verrucae. Light and scanning electron microscopy characteristics of this taxon support its systematic placement in the genus Campylodiscus. This new species is compared with other small species in genus Campylodiscus from around the world.

We describe 22 new species of Gomphoneis, and report several previously described taxa, from historical and recently made collections from Lake Baikal, Russia. We use light microscopy to document all taxa, and scanning electron microscopy to illustrate several of the species from the lake. All of the species present in Lake Baikal are part of the Elegans subgroup of the genus. Despite previous reports, we could find no representatives of the Herculeana subgroup in Baikal. We provide comparisons between the taxa, and document variability in the features found in the species. Two groups within the Elegans subgroup are present; most have 4 (or more) stigmoids, while a minority of the species lack stigmoids. We suggest that the species in Lake Baikal have two origins; one from the West, where an arc of related species spans Mongolia, NW China to Macedonia, and the second from western North America. Radiation of the two groups has resulted in species flocks. The number of Gomphoneis species in Lake Baikal is the largest number of species of the genus anywhere in the world.

Hantzschia species are uncommon in Xinjiang Province, usually found in small populations and found only in a few samples. However, the diversity in the region is relatively high, with 13 species and 1 variety being identified. Except for the cosmopolitan species H. amphioxys, H. abundans, H. virgata and H. distinctepunctata, most of the taxa in Hantzschia observed in this region have limited distributions, including H. vivacior, H. nitzschioides, H. compacta, H. barckhausenii, H. longa and H. vivax, as well as the species described herein as new. Four new species of Hantzschia are described: H. pseudobardii, H. sinensis, H. yili and H. subrobusta, a further two interesting species, H. vivacior and H. nitzschioides are documented with light and scanning electron microscopy. All species described are compared with other similar Hantzschia taxa from other localities or compared to holotype specimens. These data show a higher diversity of diatoms in Xinjiang Province than previously understood and provide additional information for understanding their biogeography.

During a survey of freshwater diatoms from Xuedong stream in the Xianju National Park, Zhejiang Province, China, a new cymbelloid species, Oricymba rhynchocephala sp. nov. has been recorded. This species is assigned to the genus Oricymba by virtue of having a ridge separating the valve face and mantle, the presence of apical pore fields, stigma with a single external opening but two internal openings, and areolae with dentate occlusions. A detailed morphological description of the new species, O. rhynchocephala, is presented, based on light and scanning electron microscopy. Oricymba rhynchocephala sp. nov. is characterized by having a linear-lanceolate outline with slightly arched valve margins towards rounded and clearly rostrate apices, as well as radiate striae. The taxon is morphologically compared with similar species of the genus Oricymba. The new species, can be easily separated from other species in Oricymba by its obvious rostrate apices. The report of this new species from Zhejiang Province adds to our understanding the morphology and distribution of the genus Oricymba in China.

Five species of the terrestrial diatom genus Luticola D.G.Mann were found during a taxonomic survey of two small volcanic islands, Ile Amsterdam and Ile Saint-Paul (Southern Indian Ocean). Apart from the two already known Luticola species L. beyensii Van de Vijver et al. and L. subcrozetensis Van de Vijver et al., two new species are described: L. ivetana Chattová & Van de Vijver sp. nov. and L. vancampiana Chattová & Van de Vijver sp. nov. Finally, one, up to now unknown, Luticola species is briefly discussed and illustrated. Detailed morphological descriptions of these taxa are provided based on both light and scanning electron microscopy observations. Morphological features of the new species are compared to morphologically similar taxa, and notes on their ecology and biogeography are added.

Two new araphid diatom (Bacillariophyta) species, Pseudostaurosira oliveraiana sp. nov. and Staurosira catamarcensis sp. nov. are described from fossil material taken from the saline Laguna Colorada (Argentinian Altiplano). The morphology of the new species is studied using both light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and is compared to that of similar taxa. Pseudostaurosira oliveraiana sp. nov. is different from other species of Pseudostaurosira by its linear to lanceolate valve outline, with apices usually subcapitate and cuneate. Staurosira catamarcensis sp. nov. is unique because it has short striae that are restricted to the valve margins, delimiting a wide and lanceolate sternum, which resembles some species of Pseudostaurosira. Also, it is the first species described in Staurosira lacking apical pore fields, expanding the high morphological variation that already exists within this genus. Additionally, two new combinations are proposed: Pseudostaurosira santaremensis comb. nov. and Staurosirella canariensis comb. nov. based on information at the SEM and LM level presented in the literature.

A new species of Cribraria, described herein as C. bicolor, appeared in moist chamber cultures on samples of the bark of Eucalyptus sp. collected at two localities in Australia. The morphology of representative specimens was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, and micrographs of relevant morphological details of sporocarps and spores are provided. The species has a number of distinct and unique morphological features, including a glossy bright-violet globose sporotheca and a two-colored long stalk which is bright-red over the lower one-third and light yellow or lemon-yellow over the upper two-thirds. The combination of these characteristics as well as a shallow calyculus which is dark-violet when viewed under a dissecting microscope and bright red in transmitted light when mounted in lactophenol makes C. bicolor a well-defined morphospecies when compared to all other species of Cribraria. The stability of the taxonomic characters of the species was confirmed by an examination of a number of specimens.

A new species, Encyonema oblonga Liu & Xie, is collected during a survey of the freshwater diatom flora of Manghe River, Shanxi, China. The valves of this new species are oblong with rounded apices and have the features typical of Encyonema, including complex areolae. We compare the new species with the most similar taxa, E. leei, E. leei var. sinensis and E. appalachianum and consider that  E. leei var. sinensis is the valid name.  The morphology of E. oblonga is documented with light and scanning electron microscopy.

Lowland intermittent ponds, although biologically important, are poorly studied water habitats. During the analyses of the material taken from lowland pond in Pelagonia Valley, and Vitachevo, Republic of North Macedonia, the diatom Sellaphora pelagonica sp. nov. was recorded and described based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The species is characterized by a strictly linear valve outline with parallel to slightly concave margins and broadly rounded ends, 15.0–40.0 µm long and 5.0–7.0 µm wide. These features, together with raphe structure and areolar shape are compared with several similar taxa currently ascribed to Sellaphora.
