New records of mosquitoes from the southern Brazilian States of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, with 18 species new for the States (Diptera: Culicidae)

Records of mosquitoes not related to malaria or filariasis in the two most southern states of Brazil (Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) are scanty. We report the finding of 18 species new for these states: Aedeomyia squamipennis, Ochlerotatus albifasciatus, Oc. fulvus, Oc. rhyacophilus, Oc. terrens, Psorophora lutzii, Runchomyia cerqueirai, Ru. theobaldi, Sa. melanonymphe, Trichoprosopon pallidiventer, Wyeomyia argenteorostris, Wy. bourrouli, Wy. cesari/moerbista, Wy. edwardsi, Wy. lutzi, Wy. quasilongirostris, Wy. tarsata and Wy. tripartita. Other species are referred for some peculiarity. Their possible medical and veterinary importance is commented.

Fasciolosis is a disease of importance for both veterinary and public health. For the first time, georeferenced prevalence data of Fasciola hepatica in bovines were collected and mapped for the Brazilian territory and data availability was discussed. Bovine fasciolosis in Brazil is monitored on a Federal, State and Municipal level, and to improve monitoring it is essential to combine the data collected on these three levels into one dataset. Data were collected for 1032 municipalities where livers were condemned by the Federal Inspection Service (MAPA/SIF) because of the presence of F. hepatica. The information was distributed over 11 states: Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Pará, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. The highest prevalence of fasciolosis was observed in the southern states, with disease clusters along the coast of Paraná and Santa Catarina and in Rio Grande do Sul. Also, temporal variation of the prevalence was observed. The observed prevalence and the kriged prevalence maps presented in this paper can assist both animal and human health workers in estimating the risk of infection in their state or municipality.

The two endemic, endangered species, Bacch­aris hypericifolia (Asteraceae) and Hypericum salvadorense (Hypericaceae), were known only for the Rio Grande do Sul state, in Brazil. In this paper we report two new occurrences of these species in Santa Catarina, expanding their geographic distribution to the north. Baccharis hypericyfolia and H. salvadorense were collected in areas of PPBio (Programa de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade) project. These novelties evidence the presence of knowledge gaps regarding the flora and little collecting effort in the grasslands from Southern Brazil.

Pheidole acutidens is a social parasite of the congeneric species P. nitidula. Since its description, the species was considered native to Argentina. In this paper we report the first records of P. acutidens for Brazil from the southern states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul). These records extend the known distribution of the species at least 1,000 km to the north. We suggest that the scarce representation of this species in entomological collections is due to its peculiar reproductive strategy, which renders the species inconspicuous and limits its dispersion

Melilotus albus Medik. is a cosmopolite and invasive species, native to the Old World, which in Brazil had its occurrence hitherto recorded only in the states of São Paulo, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. This study extends its distribution to Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, due to the recent discovery of populations in the municipalities of Florianópolis and Xanxerê. These new records are ca. 250 km distant from the nearest records, in Paraná state, also in southern Brazil.

Dendropsophus nahdereri is included in the Dendropsophus marmoratus group. Its distribution is known from the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. Here we report new records of this species and briefly describe the habitat of calling males. We found new localities of occurrence of D. nahdereri in Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. We collected calling males in temporary lentic water bodies surrounded by arboreal vegetation, inside and on the border of native forest, and inside Pinus plantations near native forest.

Fritziana is currently composed by four species known from mountain regions in the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo. Based on field records, literature, and data gathered from collections, we present new records and a distribution map for the species of the genus. Fritziana is now recorded for seven Brazilian states, including five localities in Minas Gerais. We also confirm Fritziana goeldii (Boulenger 1895) in the same state. The genus distribution now ranges in the southern Espinhaço mountain range, extending in 215 km from the previously known locality.

Abstract Necrophagous flies are of great importance for human and animal health. In places where their development occurs, parasitoids can be used as a tool to control these dipterans. In Brazil, the fauna of these parasitoids has been investigated in some regions. However, in Rio Grande do Sul, it is known the occurrence of only one species. Thus, this study aimed to create the first list of parasitoids in flies of medical and veterinary importance in Southern Brazil. Collections took place in the municipality of Pelotas (31º 42’ S; 52º 18’ W). Three replicates consisting of a 500 g bovine liver chunk placed in a tray were exposed to open air for 20 days. Then pupae were individualized and observed until their emergence. We identified 4,882 adult flies of Calliphoridae, Fanniidae, Muscidae, and Sarcophagidae. 4,040 parasitoids emerged, belonging to eight species, of which Nasonia vitripennis, Spalangia cameroni, Spalangia chontalensis, and Tachinephagus zealandicus are new records in Rio Grande do Sul state. Also, three undescribed species of the genus Aphaereta were collected. In spite of being the first attempt to inventory the fauna of hymenopteran parasitoids, this study may help in the development of management programs of these dipterans in the region.

Four new species of Pseudharpinia Schellenberg, 1931 are described. The material examined was collected during the Mini Biological Trawl project, off Atlantic’s southwestern coast on the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul with rectangular dredges at 25 to 500 meters depth. All the new species described present the following remarkable character states that make them easily distinguishable from their congeners: P. bonhami sp. nov. has pereopod 7 basis with 6 large spines posteroventrally; P. jonesyi sp. nov. exhibits pereopod 6 basis with a long acute spiny-projection posteriorly; P. pagei sp. nov. presents head with ventrolateral lines, antenna 1 primary flagellum with stout article 1, gnathopod 2 palm excavate and with slightly serrate palmar hump; P. planti sp. nov. presents head with dorsal keel and ventrolateral line, elongate flagella article 1 of antenna 1, pereopods 3–4 carpus anterior margin with a comb-like structure distally and pereopod 7 merus strongly produced posteroventrally. An identification key for all species of Pseudharpinia of the world is provided.

A taxonomic study of the fern genera Austroblechnum, Cranfillia, Neoblechnum, Lomaridium, and Telmatoblechnum, formerly Blechnum s.l. (Blechnaceae, Polypodiopsida), was conducted in southern and southeastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul) and 11 species were recognized (six of Austroblechnum, two of Cranfillia, one of Neoblechnum, one of Lomaridium, and one of Telmatoblechnum). One species has a circum-Antarctic distribution (plus Mexico), three species have a broadly Neotropical distribution, six species are restricted or almost restricted to South America and one is endemic to Brazil. New records are presented for six species in states from southeastern Brazil, in other regions of the country, as well as in other countries. Taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, lectotypifications, geographical distributions, and comments are presented for all genera and species occurring in the study area. We also give keys for the identification of Brazilian genera of Blechnaceae and for species of the genera treated here.

We conducted a taxonomic study of the fern genera Lomaria, Lomariocycas, and Parablechnum (Blechnaceae, Polypodiopsida) in southern and southeastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul). We recognized six species (one of Lomaria, one of Lomariocycas, and four of Parablechnum), three of which have a broad neotropical distribution and three that are endemic to Brazil. Four new records are reported for four species in different regions or states from Brazil, and a new record for Guyana. Taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, lectotypifications, a neotypification (Parablechnum usterianum), geographical distributions, and comments are given for all species occurring in the study region, as well as a key for the identification of the Brazilian species of Parablechnum.
