New species and new records of deepwater munidid squat lobsters from north-western Australia: Onconida, Bathymunida, Crosnierita, Plesionida and Torbenella

Nine species of Munidopsis Whiteaves, 1784, and one species of Galacantha A. Milne-Edwards, 1880 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Galatheidae) are reported from the continental shelf of Australia. Two species are new to science, M. comarge sp. nov. and M. vesper sp. nov. Munidopsis vesper is presently known only from Western Australia, but M. comarge ranges from Western Australia to New Zealand. Six species are reported for the first time from Australian waters, G. subspinosa Macpherson, 2007, M. andamanica MacGilchrist, 1905, M. crenatirostris Baba, 1988, M. hirsutissima Balss, 1913, M. levis (Alcock & Anderson, 1894) and M. nitida (A. Milne-Edwards, 1880). A range extension within Australia is reported for M. dasypus Alcock, 1894 and M. kensleyi Ahyong & Poore, 2004. These new records expand the number of Munidopsis species previously recorded from Australian waters from 15 to 22 and the number of Galacantha species from three to four. A key and illustrated guide to the species now known from Australia is provided.

AbstractThe following new species of Xanthoparmelia (Parmeliaceae) are described from Western Australia: X. cranfieldii Elix, X. elevata Elix, X. kimberleyensis Elix, X. monadnockensisX. nanoides Elix, X. nortegeta Elix, X. sleei Elix and X. toolbrunupensis Elix. In addition, X. luminosa (Elix) Hale and X. Victoriana Elix & J. Johnst. are reported from Western Australia for the first time.

A new species of the genus Speleophria is described from a cave in the Nullarbor region in southern Western Australia. Its congeners include species from the Balearics, Croatia, Bermuda, Yucatan peninsula and north-western Western Australia, all considered to be Tethyan relicts. However, the discovery of the new speleophriid in the Nullarbor region has important biogeographic and ecological implications. From the biogeographic perspective, it either suggests dispersal as the process determining the current distribution pattern of the aquatic fauna found on the Roe Plains or significantly extends the Tethyan track across Australia, from the north-western coastal margin of the continent to the southern coastal margin. From an ecologic perspective, the new speleophriid suggests the possible existence of anchialine habitats in southern Australia. Speleophria nullarborensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from its four congeners by its plesiomorphic 3-segmented endopod of the first swimming leg (2-segmented in other species) and unusually long innermost apical seta on the caudal ramus. Another character that easily distinguishes our new species, and seems to be an autapomorphic feature, is its constricted preanal somite.

A new species of freshwater sponges is described from Australia. The new species Radiospongilla fungosa is characterized by the following traits ‘megascleres microspiny stout oxeas with scattered, small, simple spines except tips’, and by having ‘gemmuloscleres long, slim, spiny strongyles with scattered simple spines and hooked spines clustered at tips’, ‘gemmular theca with 2 layers of gemmuloscleres radially and tangentially arranged’, ‘pneumatic layer irregularly filamentous network (near inner layer) and thin laminae irregularly arranged (towards outer layer)’. We discuss the relationships of the new species to other members of the genus both from Australia, particularly North-Western Australia, and from other biogeographic regions on the basis of diagnostic morphotraits. An overview on the taxonomy, biogeographic pattern and phylogeny of the genus is supplied and updated to present, together with an updated identification key for Australia species. The diagnosis of the genus Radiospongilla is emended.

Two new species, Copidognathus angusticeps spec. nov. and C. parvulus spec. nov., are described. The two species are from the southern coast of Western Australia, from Esperance. Copidognathus angusticeps has a long, slender gnathosoma, the rostrum is about as long as the gnathosomal base, major parts of the dorsal and ventral plates are punctate, the hardly delimited porose areolae have a similar ornamentation, the epimeral pores are enlarged. In C. parvulus the slender rostrum is almost twice as long as the gnathosomal base, the dorsal and ventral plates are almost smooth except for the sharply delimited areolae with rosette pores. Copidognathus amaurus Bartsch, 1999 and C. australensis (Lohmann, 1909), which are new records in the Esperance fauna, are also characterized by an elongate gnathosoma, but are not closely related with any of the two new species.

This paper deals with Australian Unionicola species, collected from all over the continent. Two new subgenera are described, Vidrineatax new subgen. and Geikienicola new subgen., as well as eight new species: U. (Kovietstax) crassiseta n. sp., U. (Downesatax) curvipalpis n. sp., U. (Geikienicola) insolita n. sp., U. (Downesatax) latiseta n.sp., U. (Downesatax) longipalpis n. sp., U. (Vidrineatax) pilosa n. sp., U. (Giselatax) trisetica n. sp. and U. (Giselatax) uncatiseta n. sp. The subgenus Smithatax is synonymised under the subgenus Downesatax. Thus 11 of the now 56 subgenera in the genus Unionicola are known from Australia. Furthermore, the first description is given of the female of U. flabelliseta Cook. Additional data are provided for U. cirrosa Koenike. Many new records are presented, especially for the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Acacia valida, a new species of Acacia subgenus Acacia from the northern parts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia is described and illustrated. A lectotype is selected for Acacia pachyphloia and two subspecies are recognised. Acacia pachyphloia subsp. pachyphloia occurs in the Northern Territory and north Western Australia, and A. pachyphloia subsp. brevipirznula subsp. nov. occurs in north Western Australia.

New records are given for Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Western Australia. New distributional records are provided for many species.
