The effect of extrusion treatment on the mechanical, thermal and corrosion resistance of Mg–La–Zn–Zr alloys were presented. It is suggested that the amount of recrystallized grains played a major role in both mechanical properties and thermal properties. It should be noted the as-cast alloy shows the best thermal conductivity reached the value about 137.507 W/(m · K), however, the mechanical performance of magnesium alloys does not reach the expected results. The thermal properties of extruded alloys have slightly decreased and then increased with the increase of extrusion temperature. Then the tensile properties of Mg–La–Zn–Zr were significantly improved after extrusion treatment. Furthermore, with the increase of extrusion temperature, the elongation-to-fracture increased substantially. After extrusion treatment, the corrosion driving force of the alloy decreases, which reduces the corrosion tendency of the magnesium alloy. The alloy presented in this paper is expected to be applied in industry.

Abstract Grain refinement has a significant influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys. In this study, a series of Al–Ti–C-xGd (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) master alloys as grain refiners were prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The synthesis mechanism of the Al–Ti–C-xGd master alloy was analyzed. The effects of Al–Ti–C-xGd master alloys on the grain refinement and mechanical properties of AZ31 (Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.4Mn) magnesium alloys were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the Al–Ti–C-xGd alloy contains α-Al, TiAl3, TiC and the core–shell structure TiAl3/Ti2Al20Gd. The refining effect of the prepared Al–Ti–C–Gd master alloy is obviously better than that of Al–Ti–C master alloy. The grain size of AZ31 magnesium alloy was reduced from 323 μm to 72 μm when adding 1 wt.% Al–Ti–C-2Gd master alloy. In the same condition, the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of as-cast alloy were increased from 130 MPa, 7.9% to 207 MPa, 16.6% respectively.

In this paper, the mechanical properties and minimum thermal conductivity of ZnZr, Zn2Zr, Zn2Zr3, and MgZn2 are calculated from first principles. The results show that the considered Zn-Zr intermetallic compounds are effective strengthening phases compared to MgZn2 based on the calculated elastic constants and polycrystalline bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, and Young’s modulus E. Meanwhile, the strong Zn-Zr ionic bondings in ZnZr, Zn2Zr, and Zn2Zr3 alloys lead to the characteristics of a higher modulus but lower ductility than the MgZn2 alloy. The minimum thermal conductivity of ZnZr, Zn2Zr, Zn2Zr3, and MgZn2 is 0.48, 0.67, 0.68, and 0.49 W m−1 K−1, respectively, indicating that the thermal conductivity of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloy could be improved as the precipitation of Zn atoms from the α-Mg matrix to form the considered Zn-Zr binary alloys. Based on the analysis of the directional dependence of the minimum thermal conductivity, the minimum thermal conductivity in the direction of [110] can be identified as a crucial short limit for the considered Zn-Zr intermetallic compounds in Mg-Zn-Zr alloys.

LED chip-on-board applications typically involve assembling an LED die stack directly on to a high thermal conductivity substrate such as a Metal Core PCB. If solder is used for die-substrate attach for such chip-on-board applications, one needs to consider the CTE mismatch between the die stack and the MCPCB and its impact on thermal cycle-induced creep fatigue of the solder material. This paper presents a methodology to compare relative performance of different solder materials with varying thermo-mechanical properties, and compare the impact of CTE mismatch and temperature swings on transient thermal properties and relative reliability of the solder attach materials. Implications for LED chip-on-board applications are discussed.
